Most of us are remarkably hardy when it comes to our response to traumatic events. According to research, between 75% and 90% of survivors of traumatic events report personal growth and positive transformations some months or years after such events (Echterling & Stewart, in press).
In this workshop, Drs. Echterling and Stewart will draw upon this promising research and their years of experience providing disaster intervention services to help faculty members and administrators foster a psychologically secure learning environment for our students and ourselves. Specifically, workshop leaders will help us better understand the concept of resilience, recognize crisis as a turning point that involves both threats and opportunities, and integrate techniques that enhance hope and that resolve into instructional strategies.

<u><i>Presenters</i></u>
<i>Lennis Echterling</i> is Professor and Director of Counseling Psychology at James Madison University. He has more than 30 years of experience in promoting resilience, particularly during crises and disasters. He has provided disaster intervention services across the country, including Mississippi and Texas after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Following the 9/11 attacks, he worked as a Red Cross volunteer with survivors at the Pentagon. More recently, he was a crisis counselor after the shootings at Virginia Tech University. His books include <i>Crisis Intervention: Promoting Resilience and Resolution in Troubled Times</i>, <i>Thriving! A Manual for Students in the Helping Professions</i>, <i>Beyond Brief Counseling</i>, and <i>Becoming a Community Counselor</i>. Dr. Echterling has received the College Award for Distinguished Service, James Madison University Distinguished Faculty Award, Virginia Counselors Association Humanitarian and Caring Person Award, and the Counseling Vision and Innovation Award from the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision.
<i>Anne Stewart</i> is Professor of Graduate Psychology at James Madison University. She has worked to promote the resilience of children and families in projects throughout the world, including Sri Lanka and India following the massive tsunami. Dr. Stewart has designed and implemented grant-funded projects addressing the psychosocial problems of landmines in Bosnia, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Mozambique. In the United States, she has served as a consultant and service provider after Hurricane Katrina, the 9/11 attacks, the Virginia Tech University shootings, and other catastrophic events. Her books include <i>Becoming a Community Counselor</i> and <i>Thriving! A Manual for Students in the Helping Professions</i>. She is the president of the Virginia Play Therapy Association and the recipient of the James Madison University "All Together One" Award and the College Award for Distinguished Service.

During the two minutes of silence held Thursday around noon for the victims of the Virginia Tech tragedy, more than 150 heads hung low while many students and community members wiped the tears from their cheeks, reflecting on the loss of 33 people connected to them through the unity of higher education.
"I think it's important for all the students at U of O to show their support," said Madeline Wigen, a University student and the ASUO finance coordinator, who attended the memorial.
Similar memorials were held on campuses across the country Thursday and today, something Wigen said made her feel connected to students across the nation and at Virginia Tech.
"Probably many students don't know somebody on that campus. This is a way to reach to the greater university community," she said.
The memorial, sponsored by the ASUO, the Veterans and Family Student Association, the Office of the President and the Office of Student life, was short and speakers from the ASUO and VFSA emphasized the importance of coming together as a community.
"We need unity now more than ever," said ASUO President Jared Axelrod, who spoke at the memorial. "I didn't know any one of the victims, but in the sense we are all in the university community and in a community as a whole, it's important to come together."
Thirty-three candles were lit, one for each death, and will remain burning until today at noon, when a moment of silence will be observed and then broken by the ringing of the campus carillon bells.
Orange and maroon ribbons were passed around and attendees were asked to sign a large banner, which will be sent to Virginia Tech after it's filled with notes of sorrow and encouragement.
"I said 'I send my love and prayers,'" said University freshman Krista von Stein of what she wrote on the banner. "I can't fathom what they're going through, but I definitely feel connected to them."
While this is a difficult time for all members of the University community, Amanda Lopez, a University student who attended the event, said it's not a time to turn away.
"I think this is a really important time to reflect on these great students and their memory and to look past the difficulty of the situation and remember the victims," said Lopez, the ASUO programs administrator.
Sean Jin, a University sophomore and member of the VFSA who spoke at the memorial, said he still hasn't gotten over the shootings of Monday morning and that he doesn't think other students have either.
"After the event happened there was sort of a somberness on campus. Everybody was affected by this event," he said.
Jin said he believes emphasizing the importance of community today will prevent tragedies similar to this one from happening in the future.
"The most important thing we have to focus on is prevention of these things," Jin said.

<i>About the bird:</i>
Cranes are large, long-legged and long-necked birds of the order Gruiformes, and family Gruidae. Unlike the similar-looking but unrelated herons, cranes fly with necks outstretched, not pulled back. Most have elaborate and noisy courting displays or "dances". (from Wikipedia)
Cranes are known for their long life spans. Though the average life span cited in various sources to not necessarily agree (probably depends on the sub-species also), numbers tend to be in the 60 to 80 year range. This was much longer than the average life span of humans in ancient times. As a result, the crane, together with the turtle/tortoise, became symbols of longevity, and, consequently, of good fortune in China and the surrounding countries. East Asian Folklore states that cranes live for 1,000 years, and turtles/tortoises for 10,000 years (a bit of an exaggeration).
<i>About Origami:</i>
The word "Origami" is Japanese for "Folding Paper". It refers to the art, as well as the paper made specifically for the activity. The origin of Origami is not known, but it was most probably invented in China, as most things were, soon after the invention of paper. It propagated both east and west together with the technology of paper making: east toward Japan where it became known as Origami; west through the Islamic Empire all the way to Spain, where it is known today as "Papiroflexia" (Paper Folding) or "folding pajaritas." (The "pajarita" is a fold popular in Spain which represents a sparrow.)
<i>About the Tradition of Folding 1000 Cranes:</i>
In Japan, tradition states that if you fold 1000 origami cranes, it will bring you good health and good luck. When someone is suffering from a severe sickness or injury, spouses, parents, children and other family members and/or friends, and sometimes the patient him/herself, would fold 1000 cranes to wish for the person's recovery. It is unclear hold old this tradition is, but the term "Semba-Zuru" (1000 Cranes) dates back at least 200 years.
<i>About the 1000 Cranes @ VT Project:</i>
After the horrific events on April 16, 2007, a group of people in Blacksburg, and the surrounding communities (Christiansburg, Radford, Salem, Roanoke, Pembroke, etc.) got together and decided to fold as many cranes as possible to encourage the students and faculty who were wounded in the attack, and to wish for their speedy and complete recovery. The group included both undergraduate and graduate students, current and emeritus faculty members, and people from the local communities including children as young as preschoolers. Many nationalities were represented including, but not limited to, American, Belgian, Chinese, German, Indian, Iranian, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Luxembourger, Lebanese, Palestinian, Serbian, Swedish, Taiwanese, Thai, and Vietnamese. The four major faiths were also represented: Buddhist, Christian, Muslim, and Jewish. The total number of people involved is unclear since friends called on friends to help out, who called on their friends to help out, and so on and so forth. The art supply shop Mish Mish also pitched in by providing a discount to the paper purchased.
In the five days from April 18th to 22nd, the group completed over 5000 cranes, each crane representing a sincere prayer of the folder for the wounded. The cranes were then strung together into strands of 50 birds each: 20 strands adding up to 1000 cranes. A 50-bird strand was sent to each of the wounded students, and the remainder (over 4000) is displayed here.
More cranes are currently being folded, and they will be added to the display as they become available. <b>If you would also like to express your support and prayer for the wounded, please contribute a crane/cranes.</b> Instructions on how to fold one can easily be found on the internet by searching for "origami crane". They are also usually included in packages of origami sold in stores. The collection point of the complete cranes is in the <b>Squires Student Center 225 Office Suite</b> where they will be picked up by members of our group. A 50-bird strand ready to be hung would be most appreciated.

A total of 32 people were killed Monday in a Virginia Tech campus building in the deadliest shooting rampage in modern U.S. history. The gunman, a student from South Korea, took down his victims in two attacks that were spread two hours apart. The tragic incident has sent shockwaves around the world.
We wish to express our sympathy to the victims' families and hope they will get all the help they need to make it through this very difficult time. The other students at the university should also be assisted so they can overcome the shock and grief they are suffering.
U.S. President George W. Bush has ordered flags flown at half staff across the nation. Speaking at a memorial service on the Virginia Tech campus, Bush said "it's impossible to make sense of such violence and suffering."
"Those whose lives were taken did nothing to deserve their fate," the president said. "They were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Now they're gone -- and they leave behind grieving families, and grieving classmates, and a grieving nation."
At first it was reported that the alleged killer was a student from China. Later, however, police found the gunman was a fourth-year student from South Korea, described in the media as a "loner." Authorities said he was a legal resident of the United States. The suspect committed suicide after the attacks. Police said there was no evidence of any accomplice at either of the two attacks, but are exploring the possibility.
The shocking incident has prompted debate and discussion about the prevalence of gun ownership in the United States.
An Indonesian mother, according to a news report, bemoaned the availability of guns in the United States after learning her son was among those killed in the massacre, while South Koreans expressed shame and shock that the gunman came from their country.
"Why can people bring guns to campus?" the Indonesian mother said, recalling third-year doctoral student Partahi Lumbantoruan, who had such a promising future. The family had sold property and a car to finance his civil engineering studies.
The lax gun-control legislation in the U.S. is something on which people in many parts of the world don't agree. Here in Taiwan, gun control legislation is tough and gun possession is generally confined to law-enforcement personnel. The local Gun Control Act even bans the production of toy guns that could be converted into life-threatening firearms, or those bearing similarities to real guns in appearance, material, structure and trigger device.
The strict gun-control legislation here has without a doubt played an important role in preventing violent crime from rising rapidly.
In the United States, there is a powerful gun lobby, and legislators fear that advocacating stricter gun control would result in a loss of votes. Another reason why guns are readily available is the common American belief that in a free country, citizens should be free to own guns.
The slogan of the lobbyists is: "Guns don't kill people, people do." Well, that's like saying, "Bombs don't kill people, people do."
If restrictions on gun possession in the United States were stricter, the Virginia Tech shooting rampage -- and many other campus shootings that have occurred in the past -- might not have occurred.
Hopefully, this tragic event will lead to vigorous efforts in the U.S. to pass some sensible gun control legislation.

<b>The media are once again turning into the public's whipping boys</b>

The nation is still focused on Blacksburg, Va. as all Americans honor the victims of the Virginia Tech shootings.
But as the initial shock wears off, news organizations need to be weary of hyping a story that doesn't need the standard cable news sensationalism.
This story has been sent across the globe since it occurred at the beginning of the week. People in Australia, London, India, South Korea and more are all discussing the matter.
South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun offered condolences to victims for a third time and, among the South Korean public, a sense of despair prevailed.
"I and our people cannot contain our feelings of huge shock and grief," said President Roh Moo-hyun. "I pray for the souls of those killed and offer words of comfort from my heart for those injured, the bereaved families and the U.S. people."
Hundreds left messages on the country's top Web site, Naver.
"I'm too shameful that I'm a South Korean," wrote an Internet user identified only by the ID iknijmik. "As a South Korean, I feel apologetic to the Virginia Tech victims."
Ed Board understands that the Koreans are apologizing for Seung-Hiu because they do not want any race-related retaliation to occur. Asian-American groups have released similar statements for the same reason.
But this is an angle of the story not worth the time devoted to it. There have been no retributions and there is no need for the Korean peninsula to apologize for a killer. Seung-Hiu wasn't acting on behalf of his country, he was only carrying out his personal desires.
Not to mention the flap about NBC's airing of the controversial video made by the killer.
As (amateur) members of the media, we appreciate that the network has to walk a careful line between letting people know the whole truth and not offending its viewership.
We know that many don't want to pay the killer attention.
But we also know that the families who want to see the man who killed their children have a right to do so.
We know that after an event like this, people have a driving desire to understand why.
Even though there's never going to be a definitive answer, the media have an obligation to report on as much of what happened as possible.

The worst recorded shooting spree in American history occurred on the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, Va., yesterday. Thirty-three people were murdered, dozens suffered injuries and the entire campus now must deal with grief. How does someone begin to digest the incomprehensible evil exhibited by this shooter and the needless loss of innocent lives?
Our thoughts are with the families of the victims and the entire Virginia Tech community. This is the natural reaction people should have. We were shocked when we saw how politicians, such as John McCain, a Bush administration spokesperson and the media turned this event into a discussion about the right to bear arms. Political policy should not be a part of the discourse and coverage of the massacre at this early stage. It is entirely inappropriate to even mention political policy right now, when families are still being notified of their relatives' deaths.
This is a time for mourning, not campaigning.
If people need something to talk about, rather than just trying to cope, the discussion should be about why officials took two hours to close down the campus after the first shooting in the dorm. When a murder-suicide occurred at the University of Washington April 2, the entire campus was locked down. Rather than close down the entire campus immediately, Virginia Tech officials did not give students elsewhere on campus any information or warning for two hours. By this time, the gunman had closed off the exits to the engineering building and had begun his killing spree.
Furthermore, students were first notified via e-mail about the incident. Ed Board does not think e-mail communication is sufficient for such a drastically dangerous event. Police should have been in every building within minutes of the dorm shooting, going into classrooms and locking down the campus.
We wonder how officials here at SMU would react to such an event and hope that they would take better precautionary measures, leaving nothing to chance. In such cases, it's better to overreact than to sit by and do nothing. However, in SMU's emergency "Lockdown/Take Cover" guidelines, there is no indication of what officials, such as the SMU police, would do to protect students. The plan states that, in such an event, "emergency alarms should not be sounded" (dare they draw attention to the police instead of those in classrooms) and that information would be relayed via "e-mail, phone calls or word of mouth."
Ed Board does not believe that this is an adequate means to alert the campus. A better solution would be to install a silent alarm system throughout campus, where flashing lights could indicate that something is wrong.
Once again, we are shocked and saddened by this tragedy, and we encourage students to show their support by attending the prayer vigil at the Flagpole at 1:15 p.m. today.

The blood had not yet dried in the lecture rooms of Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia, before polarised camps claimed that the slaughter of 32 students and teachers vindicated their particular stance on gun control. So shrill was the debate about whether the tragedy would have been better prevented by reducing firearms through stronger gun laws or by increasing availability through liberalising right-to-carry legislation, that the more important issue of gun violence as a public-health menace has been neglected. Until the debate widens to address violence as a preventable social problem, rather than solely a legal concern, mass shootings will continue. To pretend that the Blacksburg tragedy is unique ignores the legacy of school shootings in Dunblane, Columbine, and elsewhere, and deprives people of an opportunity to reduce future risks.
Violence is a broad problem that involves communities, not just criminals, and populations around the world, not just the USA. In 2003, 1·6 million people were killed by violence worldwide, more than by road traffic crashes or malaria. One-third died as a result of homicide. The incidence is rising, fuelled by inequalities, victimisation, and lack of social trust, so that gunshot wounds are a major cause of death for young men.
Because the USA has the highest homicide and gun-homicide rates of any industrialised democracy, the country is a natural focus for attempts to learn more about violence. But despite many Federally funded programmes, objective research on interventions to reduce violence is lacking. Nor has the Campbell Collaboration, established to synthesise evidence for the social sciences, provided guidance. In 2004, the <a href="http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_ob=RedirectURL&_method=externObjLink&_locator=url&_plusSign=%2B&_targetURL=http%253A%252F%252Fwww.nap.edu%252Fcatalog%252F10881.html">US National Research Council</a> critically reviewed gun violence and concluded that there was little quality science to inform decision making. The reason is that most studies are based on associations or on before-and-after series.
A 2004 survey from Harvard estimated that 38% of households and 26% of individuals had at least one of the 283 million private firearms in the USA. Even teenagers report ready access to guns. Several studies in the USA and elsewhere cite protection as the main reason for having a gun, despite the fact that guns are far more likely to be used offensively, including suicide, than for self-defence. The association of firearms and their use in homicide between populations (four shooting deaths per 100 000 in the USA vs 0·15 per 100 000 in Cameroon where private guns are banned) is complex and obviously involves cultural factors as well.
Yet, interventions within populations that remove guns do seem to reduce gun crime in a reproducible manner. In 2003, more than half the guns retrieved from crimes were traced to 1% of dealers. When such a dealer in Milwaukee stopped selling inexpensive handguns, local gun crime was reduced by 96% and the transfer of new weapons to criminals decreased by 44%. In Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, and Kansas City, policing to remove illegal firearms from the street reduced gun crime as well. Multiple interventions combining social networks with stronger enforcement can also be successful, such as the 63% drop in homicides after Operation Ceasefire in Boston. Tougher gun laws in Brazil in 2003, allied with a buy-back programme of 450 000 guns, reduced the gun-homicide rate by 8% and hospitalisation for gunshots by 4·6%.
How can such findings inform sensible policy decisions? The National Research Council concludes that individual-level data are needed. Characteristics of victims can be enhanced with WHO's <a href="http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_ob=RedirectURL&_method=externObjLink&_locator=url&_plusSign=%2B&_targetURL=http%253A%252F%252Fwww.who.int%252Fclassifications%252Ficd%252Fadaptations%252Ficeci%252Fen%252Findex.html">International Classification of External Causes of Injuries</a>, which by introducing standard reporting criteria, enables comparisons between studies. But there are few details about perpetrators, since criminal background checks for sales by gun dealers are destroyed within 24 h and private second-hand sales, which constitute 40% of gun transfers in the USA, are not recorded. To understand assailants' risk factors requires records of gun ownership or ballistic fingerprinting, to which the powerful US National Rifle Association is opposed.
The events in Blacksburg on April 16 demand a more mature evaluation of gun violence, based on the right to health instead of the right to bear arms, and which places public welfare above self-interest. The National Research Council's call for accurate, individual-level data from rigorous studies is essential, in order to provide robust information on which sound interventions can be based. But until such data are available, the best current evidence clearly supports an immediate reduction in the availability of firearms as a public-health priority.
