The University&#39;s system, which messages students&#39; cell phones or other portable devices, has not yet been fully implemented, but it signals a heightened concern about campus security that existed even before the shootings. But the shootings have ignited a national debate on methods to prevent and effectively respond to crises and have led to questions about campus security procedures. Some Virginia Tech students have criticized campus safety officials for their slow response to gunman Cho Seung-Hui&#39;s murder of two students. Campus police notified students by email about two hours after the incident, but by then, Cho had begun his second round of shooting, taking 30 more lives and his own. Crises like last week&#39;s shooting are difficult to predict, Public Safety Deputy Director Charles Davall said. "You can never totally be prepared for something like this," he said. "It could happen anywhere." At a Senate hearing yesterday on campus security, Public Safety Director Steven Healy recommended that more universities adopt "mass notification systems that are capable of reaching community members." Getting students to provide their portable contact information for this system, however, could be difficult, Healy testified. "Even if you have a system that can reach a person&#39;s cell phone" or other portable device, he said, "they still have to be willing to give you those numbers." Healy, who is also president of the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators, said there is room for nationwide improvement on campus security. "[M]ost colleges and universities have plans" to respond to crises, he said, but "we&#39;re a long way from being able to say ... that all institutions know how those plans will play." Since last week&#39;s shootings, Public Safety has begun a review of campus security plans. Davall said that the department tentatively has arranged for Mercer County officials to train its officers. In the event of a crisis, Davall said, Public Safety would respond by securing the area and calling local armed police, since campus police do not carry weapons. They would then notify all University members by email. But one problem with this method is that "students have to be looking at [a computer] to get the email," he said. Healy also advocated "community policing" in his testimony. As part of Public Safety&#39;s policy, officers are required to patrol campus by foot for at least two hours a day so that students and faculty feel comfortable approaching them, officer Jim Lanzi said. The department&#39;s efforts to engage the community can make people more comfortable in reporting suspicious activity, Lanzi said, but they are also meant to educate the community since students sometimes have a "false sense of security" on campus. While these initiatives would not directly prevent an event like the Virginia Tech shooting, Lanzi said, the atmospheric difference they make could help increase the efficacy of a response. Despite our fierce rivalry with the Hokies, we all are college students and share a common bond. One thing I noticed over these past few days has been the media coverage, blanketing the campus and interviewing everyone possible. I began to wonder, what kind of coverage would be done if something like that happened here? The Rock would be swarmed with media, so students would of course have to move any vigil they would like to hold to some other venue. The BankUnited Center would be rented out, so I&#39;m sure students couldn&#39;t go there either. The blame would go immediately to the football team. Sports pundits like Bill Plaschke and Mark May would call for the athletic department to be carpet-bombed, and the immediate arrest of every athlete on campus. Surely, if it happened at UM and it was bad, it&#39;s the athletic department&#39;s fault. Next would be the criticism of university president Donna Shalala, citing her time with the Clinton administration. Surely, without his passing of the Brady Bill, students could have been armed with Uzis and handled the gunman themselves. Ultimately, the public at large will decide that this kind of thing is just what happens in Miami; it&#39;s "Thug U," so why should we be surprised? How can I make these assumptions? Because the same kind of reaction is unleashed whenever this university is faced with tragedy. Bryan Pata&#39;s murder was used by the media to attack the University of Miami. Just look at MSNBC&#39;s Mike Celizic, who said this after Pata&#39;s murder: "And so, it really doesn&#39;t matter why Pata was shot or by whom. He played for the Hurricanes. He died violently. If it happened at Ohio State, we&#39;d be shocked. But at Miami, a lot of people will say it&#39;s not even a surprise: when you recruit thugs, such things happen." Of course, it was the university&#39;s fault. By recruiting guys other teams had given up on, someone came and shot Pata. Look at the Willie Cooper/Brandon Meriweather shooting last summer. Cooper and Meriweather, noticing a suspicious vehicle circling their house, investigated. They were shot at. Meriweather returned fire in defense, with a registered gun. What was the response from the media? "Let&#39;s get Miami." Instead of worrying about the status of Cooper, it became a pile-on. Remove Cooper and Meriweather from the team, put Miami on probation, and what else can we do to them? So what is the point? Is the coverage that important? Don&#39;t most people tune out the media anyway? As I&#39;ve been watching the coverage, I have felt such compassion for Virginia Tech. That university needs everyone now, as they grieve and try to move on. As I came to the realization about what would happen at Miami, I grew scared. Would anyone be there in our time of need? As time went by, I came to a realization: they probably wouldn&#39;t. Would West Virginia University be prepared for a horrific incident such as the tragedy that occurred at Virginia Tech on Monday? The answer is yes, University officials say. "Blacksburg is a lot like Morgantown, and if it could happen there, it could happen anywhere," said West Virginia University spokeswoman Becky Loftstead. "In light of this, we are going to review the emergency plan and look at it intensely to make sure that all of our &#39;I&#39;s are dotted and &#39;T&#39;s are crossed to make sure any event like this is covered," Loftstead said. Prior to the massacre in Blacksburg, WVU officials were in the process of finding vendors to provide University-wide text messaging services in the event of an emergency, Loftstead said. Currently, the University would broadcast announcements on MIX and forward them to WVU.edu e-mail addresses as it does when canceling class during the winter. Officials were also looking into the idea of large messaging centers that would be visible in high traffic areas. Dr. Dan Della-Giustina, a WVU professor and expert in public safety, also suggested the implementation of a University-wide alarm system. "My thought is to develop an air raid-like signal, similar to the ones during World War II," Della-Giustina said. "It would sound a siren, when the students would hear this, regardless of where they were, they would know to stay put and be on lock down. Yet, despite new proposals, University officials have always had a plan for the instant disaster were to strike WVU. If WVU were faced with the same situation that arose in Blacksburg, students would be urged to remain where they were and focus on protecting themselves. In what Roberts called an active shooter situation, DPS members have been trained in a program called "Active Shooter," and a team is also trained in Rapid Response. To correspond with the DPS response, Morgantown Police Department, West Virginia State Police and Morgantown Fire Department also became involved in the situation. In the Virginia Tech scenario, students and families were reunited at the alumni center in Blacksburg, but if the situation were to arise in Morgantown, that may not be the best protocol. "If you look at WVU, there is no single road. We are an expansive town," Roberts said. "We work with Morgantown Police Department, and that is a benefit, to say that there is a central location is not what we are advocating." The ideal plan would be for students and faculty to stay in place, secure doors and to wait for the green light. After a traumatizing event, students are likely to need some kind of counseling to deal with the shocking aftermath. "It&#39;s crisis counseling, and always you need to assess the student&#39;s concern, is there some sense of immediacy, friend or family involved," said Dr. Peter Kahn of the Carruth Center. The event was hosted by the Student Government Association. President David Hardesty offered some remarks to all that gathered. "Any explanation we may offer may seem inadequate ... we must not give up hope for a better world," he said. "Violence can erupt in even the most peaceful of places ... each one of you is precious to your family and friends and to this University and to the future of this nation." Students have been showing their support throughout the week since the tragedy took place Monday in Blacksburg, Va. Jason Parsons, SGA vice president, said the student response has been poignant since Monday. As of Tuesday, more than 800 electronic cards and 350 hand-written cards were sent to the Virginia Tech campus from students at WVU. On Wednesday SGA set out banners for the campus community to sign and to send messages of hope to those affected at Virginia Tech. Parsons said two banners were filled, and SGA members handed out over 1,000 maroon and orange ribbons for students to show their support for the Hokies. "It&#39;s been amazing to see the hearts of students on campus," Parsons said. The Center for Civic Engagement has also played a big part in sending thoughts and prayers to the students and faculty at Virginia Tech. Brett White, the administrative assistant of the Center for Civic Engagement, said besides helping SGA plan Wednesday night&#39;s vigil, they also have a booth set up in the Mountainlair for students to write their messages on index cards. The cards, which read "From Your Mountaineer Friends," will be sent by the Center of Civic Engagement to the Virginia Tech campus. But perhaps the most moving part of the week was Wednesday night&#39;s service. Over 3500 students and Morgantown residents gathered outside Woodburn Hall and held candles to honor the victims and their families of the Virginia Tech massacre. SGA President David Kirkpatrick welcomed the crowd. Then there was a moment of silence. At exactly 9 p.m., three chimes rang from the bell of the U.S.S. West Virginia which sits outside Oglebay Hall and is used as a memorial to students who have died. "We hope that tonight&#39;s vigil, through words and music and reflection, begins healing," Kirkpatrick said. "Thirty-three men and women lost their lives in Blacksburg on Monday, and tonight our heartfelt prayers go out to the families," Parsons said. He then introduced Seyran Celik, a Morgantown resident who attends Virginia Tech. Celik shared her story from Monday with the crowd, saying through tears that she lost two friends that day. She said she has received numerous e-mails from friends and family at WVU with the same recurring sentence: "WVU stands with VT." The New York Yankees came to town and whipped my Virginia Tech Hokies, 11-0. I have never been so happy to lose. Since the tragedy on our campus last April, emotions have often been close to the surface, but on this day there was joy in Hokieville, and gratitude that the Yankees cared enough to come. Our university has been gradually healing. Events like the Yankee game have helped - even though we remembered why we were there. Life on campus is returning to normal, though normal may never be quite the same. In some ways it is better. The Virginia Tech community was relatively tight knit before, but this past year has brought us even closer. Students, alumni, faculty, and staff seem ever more willing to listen to a friend, to help a neighbor, to give back - perhaps due to a greater sense of empathy, or a need to rebalance our world with good. From my office window in Hutcheson Hall, I can see the memorial that sits across the Drillfield. Much of the time when I look out, someone is there, as they are right now. But just before noon on March 18, when more people had gathered than normal, I knew the Yankees were about to arrive. They had not announced a specific time they would visit the site, but I was sure they would. My friend Jeff and I hurried over, just as the buses pulled up. The players walked around the 32 engraved stones, and stood silently as President Steger told them how a student group called Hokies United had placed the original stones, right after the shootings. The site had quickly become a focal point for remembering and for healing. A student near me said that she was a big Yankee fan and that one of the victims had been her fiancé. As the players filed around the semi-circle in front of the stones, she asked Alex Rodriguez to sign the back of her shirt, which bore a picture of the person she deeply missed. He did. She said it was one of the greatest moments of her life. Rodriguez later said he was never prouder to be a Yankee. Jason Giambi started signing autographs, and like a kid I asked him to sign my baseball cap. It felt funny fighting back tears while a baseball player signed my hat. The movie line "There is no crying in baseball!" applies double to gray-haired professors. The players got back on their buses for the ride across campus to prepare for the game. Jeff and I walked to the ball field. Tickets to the game had been distributed by lottery to students, faculty, and staff. When Jeff won a ticket, I was happy for him. When he saw I had not, he offered me his, even though he is a lifelong Yankee fan. He is a true friend. In the end, another friend who had won was not able to go. He gave me his ticket so Jeff and could go together. When the Yankees took the field for warm ups, several players signed autographs as students swarmed. Batting practice followed, and a ceremony - with 32 balloons released to the sky. Then the game was played. The Yankees started their front line players, and in the third inning a Hokie pitcher even retired the Bronx Bombers in order. All the Hokie players got into the game. After each inning, they slapped each other on the back and smiled from ear to ear. You could feel the healing. Thank you Mr. Steinbrenner: I am a diehard Minnesota Twins fan, but will never again be able to root against your Yankees. The past year at Virginia Tech has taught me a lot about the power of empathy and the surprising role that sports and other forms of entertainment can play in a healing process. Not only did the Yankees come, but Dave Mathews and John Mayer did as well, donating a concert that filled the stadium for a special evening. Events like these have brought happiness and tears. Both have helped. Before last April, many people would ask, "What is a Hokie?" No one asked that in the days after the tragedy, but many messages arrived with the words, "We are all Hokies today." Penn State fans dressed in Hokie colors for their spring football game. Others around the country also wore Virginia Tech gear. The message of caring was clear. This winter, many at Virginia Tech wore Northern Illinois colors following the horrific event on that campus. We know how the Huskies feel. Since the tragedy, I have received messages of support from around the world, including some from high school classmates I have not seen for 40 years. Virginia Tech has received countless messages and millions of dollars in donations for the victims. It is impossible to adequately express the gratitude we feel for such an outpouring of support. All that I or anyone at Virginia Tech can say to you is: Thank You. We are all Hokies, Huskies, and Nittany Lions today.
