During the discussion, which was sponsored by Counseling and Psychological Services and ASA, students addressed concerns about how aspects of Asian-American culture may intensify frustrations and pressures with which many students struggle on a daily basis. Senior Kevin Fang, outgoing president of ASA, said the event was intended to give students on campus "an opportunity to process all that is going on." "A lot of Korean students at Virginia Tech have gone home," he said. "Although they know that the shooting had nothing to do with race, they feel that there might be some repercussions." The six students present also discussed the national media&#39;s coverage of the incident, questioning their decision to identify the race of Cho Seung-Hui, the shooter, and debating the relevance of this information in attempting to understand the motive for his actions. They discussed whether or not the shooter&#39;s actions could be explained through his cultural and social identity, and talked about how situations like the one Cho faced can be prevented. Some students shared experiences about other Asian-American students they knew who experienced pressures and feelings of cultural disconnect which led them to lives of isolation and depression. Gary Glass, senior coordinator for outreach and developmental programming for CAPS, said his objective in helping to organize the discussion was to "provide an arena for things to get voiced that aren&#39;t often voiced-at least not in any formal capacity." He added that he saw a variety of reactions expressed during the discussion. "If there are voices that if they were more heard would further enrich the campus, then let&#39;s create a space where they can be heard," Glass said. He said CAPS is devoted to supporting discourse with all different types of groups on campus, and that the Virginia Tech shooting presented a need for such discourse. The students, however, pointed to the social stigma many students associate with counseling that may discourage students in need from seeking help. The discussion was not limited to East-Asian students and included South-Asian students as well. Junior Shawn Kwatra, a South-Asian student and incoming co-president of external affairs for Duke Diya, said he felt the topic of the discussion was important not only for East Asians but for all Asians and for international students in general. Feelings of alienation are not only unique to Asian-American students alone but also affect foreign students of all backgrounds, Kwatra said. "There is a cultural difference, and that cultural difference is something that doesn&#39;t have to be East Asian," he said. Kwatra added that he felt the forum was a first step on the way to finding solutions that could prevent students from taking a similar path to the one Cho took. "I think the biggest thing we need to do is raise awareness," Kwatra said. It was the church&#39;s first Sunday worship gathering since the April 16 massacre that claimed 33 lives, including gunman Seung-Hui Cho. Christians were among the victims. Two NLCF members died, and 10 other victims were connected in some way to the church. Church leaders honored the dead, prayed for their families, and addressed why-and-how questions that went beyond forensics. The four Christians who as adolescents survived the massacre at Columbine High School almost eight years ago traveled to the southwestern Virginia campus to guide church leaders and minister to students processing grief, anger, and sorrow. Wendy Chinn, a counseling graduate student who leads NLCF&#39;s women&#39;s ministry, acknowledged that everyone is weary of the question, "How are you doing?" "Some lost someone extremely close. Others lost an acquaintance," Chinn said to the almost 400 people and network television cameras in the full auditorium. "Others still had a class in Norris, lived in A-J [West Ambler Johnston dormitory]. We remember where we were when it happened. We all grieve very differently. We&#39;re all going through it together. We know this is hard, know it&#39;s going to take time." Chris Backert, one of three NLCF pastors, referred to Mark 4, where Christ&#39;s disciples were caught in a boat during a storm. "We have all been through a storm. Why was it her? Why was it him? It could have been me." Backert noted that Jesus did not cause the storm. All the world&#39;s evil, he said, is sin that results when people choose to rebel against God. "When that tragedy strikes us, it also strikes God." Congregation members submitted written questions asking whether Monday&#39;s massacre was part of God&#39;s plan, what forgiveness of Cho would look like, and what the church is doing to help. One student asked whether he could have prevented Cho&#39;s actions by being more in-tune with God. Another asked whether it was okay to be mad at God. Pastors answered the questions by explaining that God gives each person free will. Forgiveness, they said, would look different for each person. Concerning whether the massacre could have been prevented, co-pastor Matt Rogers said that each person is responsible for his or her own action. However, he told the congregation, "Not one verse of Scripture says you&#39;re responsible for what happened." Concerning anger at God, co-pastor Jim Pace referred to Job, who responded at first with praise and then with anger to the calamity that befell him. So, where was God when the Virginia Tech massacre happened? Pace answered, "God was in us, being heroic in the face of incredible fear." A candlelight vigil will be held tonight at 8:30 p.m. at the Nebraska Union Plaza to honor the victims and survivors of the Virginia Tech University shooting that took the lives of 33 people, including the gunman. The ceremony is being hosted by the Association of Students of the University of Nebraska at no charge to students. It is going to be open to anyone in the community, not just University of Nebraska-Lincoln students, staff and faculty members. "We won&#39;t be exclusive - anyone who wants to come and show support for Virginia Tech is more than welcome," said Greg Gifford, a human sciences graduate student and ASUN senator. Ése fue el Juan Ramón Ortiz Ortiz que describieron ayer sus familiares, atónitos aún ante el fallecimiento del joven de 26 años a manos del desquiciado que ayer mató a 32 personas en el campus de la univesidad Virginia Tech en Blacksburg, Virginia, en la peor matanza a tiros en la historia de Estados Unidos. "Él era un tipo completamente sano, sin vicios y buen hijo" El doctor Oscar Marrero, primo hermano del difunto, dijo que fue la esposa de Ortiz Ortiz, Liselle Vega, quien se comunicó al hogar de sus suegros para dar la mala noticia de la muerte del joven de 26 años graduado con altos honores de ingeniería civil de la Universidad Politécnica. Vega también estudia en Virginia Tech, pero no se encontraba en los predios al momento de la tragedia. "Ella estaba llamándolo, pero no lo conseguía en el celular. Luego llamó a un hospital y le dijeron que el cuerpo estaba en la lista del la morgue", dijo Marrero, entrevistado en las afueras de la residencia familiar, mientras se escuchaban personas orando en el interior del hogar. "La verdad es que no tenemos muchos detalles. Liselle es el enlace con la familia y ni siquiera le dejan ver el cuerpo", agregó Marrero. Explicó que la familia no tiene idea de cuándo el cuerpo podría arriba a a Puerto Rico. Ortiz Ortiz y Vega, quien es oriunda de Manatí, llevaban apenas un año casados y no tenían hijos. Ambos graduados de la Universidad Politécnica, decidieron partir rumbo a Virginia Tech para completar sus respectivas maestrías. Debido a su excelente promedio, Ortiz Ortiz, se desempeñaba como profesor y estudiante. Estaba pautado a terminar su maestría en diciembre. Los familiares que hablaron con El Nuevo Día describieron a Ortiz Ortiz, graduado del Colegio Nuestra Señora de Belén, como un excelente estudiante y amante de la música. Around midnight on Tuesday, Cary Farrington and Ryan Hill began to drive to VT to deliver a 4-foot by 8-foot sheet of plywood signed by many Auburn students and faculty. When Farrington and Hill arrived in Blacksburg, Va. around 8:30 a.m., they were received by members of Virginia Tech&#39;s SGA, who helped them erect the signed memorial, which reads "We stand with you in Prayer." Farrington described the campus as real silent, partly because many students had left. The students the pair did encounter were still shocked. "It still had not registered with them," Farrington said. "They still had not processed everything. It was really a shock for them." Farrington and Hill had the chance to see the campus, including the buildings where the shootings occurred. Despite the quiet atmosphere, Farrington said police were all over campus. "The Virginia State Police were patrolling everywhere," Farrington said. "I&#39;ve never seen so many police. On gameday here we see a lot of Alabama State Troopers. This just blows that out of the water." The sign was created by members of Auburn&#39;s Wesley Foundation, which held a prayer vigil Monday night. Julie Robertson, associate director of Wesley Foundation, said about 45 people attended the vigil where Farrington and Hill brought up the idea of a sign. "The beautiful thing about the response was the idea of &#39;what can we do to tangibly show we love them from a distance,&#39;" Robertson said. Farrington, who is president of the Wesley Foundation, isn&#39;t sure how many names are on the sign, but he said after the first two hours on the Concourse, he counted 500 names on the front alone. He estimated another 300 on the back. He said the highest guess anyone has made is approximately 2,500 signatures total. "There&#39;s literally not any room to put another signature on there," Farrington said. Farrington said the Virginia Tech students received the sign well. "Everybody up there was really appreciative and excited," Farrington said. "It was amazing to see how well they received us." Pictures of the sign on Virginia Tech&#39;s campus have been posted on cnn.com and in the photo gallery on usatoday.com. Farrington said he and Hill had to drink a lot of Red Bull and double-shot espressos to make the trip possible. Robertson said an anonymous donor also ensured the sign made it to Virginia Tech by providing the money to make the trip happen. Robertson described the journey as a "labor of love," and one the pair didn&#39;t hesitate to take. "The boy has a very busy week," Robertson said. "He did not have time to drive up to Virginia, but it was never a second thought. He never second-guessed it all." But Farrington is reluctant to receive any sort of recognition. "We were real adamant that we wanted to make sure it wasn&#39;t about us or us bringing it up," Farrington said.
