Nebraska Union Plaza was silent for a few moments Wednesday night as hundreds gathered in solemn remembrance.

The candlelight vigil was organized in honor of the tragic Monday shootings at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va.

Chancellor Harvey Perlman, Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Juan Franco, ASUN President Dave Solheim and Bill Velander, chairman of the chemical and biomolecular engineering department, addressed the large group that filled the entire space between Broyhill Fountain and the Nebraska Union.

Even after the candles were out and the speeches were complete, many students remained in the plaza consoling each other, signing a card for students at Virginia Tech and forming prayer circles.

The card will be in the Nebraska Union for the rest of the week and will be shipped to Virginia Tech along with cards from hundreds of other campuses around the United States.

For many present, the gathering was a chance to show support for those affected by the murders, as well as a way to cope with the reality of such a shocking event on a college campus, Solheim said.

"(This tragedy) means a lot to this campus and to Virginia Tech," he said. "The purpose of this evening is remembrance, so people can cope and support their friends and show support to those affected by the incident."

Many students attended the candlelit event, but Solheim said he knows that many other students at UNL are coping with the images of the shootings in their own private way.

For Velander, the tragedy has very personal connections. A former faculty member at Virginia Tech, Velander has many friends and colleagues still in Blacksburg. His daughter is attending medical school at Virginia Tech.

"It&#39;s a great place, just idyllic," he said. "That&#39;s what&#39;s so frightening. If it can happen to such an idyllic, golden, amazing place, it can happen anywhere."

Although the event touched him personally, taking the lives of two of his colleagues, he stressed that people, especially students, all over the country should take note of the tragic event.

"Anybody that has a father or a mother or a sister or a brother is affected by this, because these are the kinds of people who died," he said. "That&#39;s so many broken hearts. That&#39;s hundreds of broken hearts."

Vigils like these are positive experiences in the wake of such a dark moment in history, he said.

The events may be tragic, but the number of people willing to show support gives Velander hope that this generation is willing to make positive change.

"If there&#39;s anything positive that can come out of this, it&#39;s that young people can see such a tragedy, recognize the problem and work within society and solve it," he said.

"There&#39;s a heavy burden on students who have witnessed this either through the news or in Blacksburg. We have to realize when someone is down and work until they&#39;re up again. We can&#39;t let things like this happen."

REMARKS BY DEAN KENT W. FUCHS

Today the Cornell family joins with the Virginia Tech family in
remembering the many students and faculty that unexpectedly and
violently died this week.

Our grief at this loss is profound because we are a part of the same
family of students, faculty, and staff. Like those at VT, Monday
morning we were in class, taking exams, giving lectures, and sharing
with Virginia Tech students and faculty in the hard work but great
joy of learning and teaching.

Many in the Cornell family have very personal connections to VT.
Some of you have studied, lived, and even have grown up in
Blacksburg. A number of you have degrees from Virginia Tech. Others
of us have colleagues, friends, sisters, brothers, daughters, and
sons now at VT.

My first visit to VT four years ago was with my son, Eric. He was
looking for a good engineering school, but one that wasn&#39;t too close
to his parents at Cornell. On that first visit Eric and I were
immensely impressed by the people of VT and the peaceful beauty of
the campus.

With Eric now studying Engineering at VT, I have come to greatly
appreciate the VT family. The students and faculty care greatly for
each other and have an immense loyalty to their university.

I have also come to appreciate, through my son, what it means to have
a Turkey as your school mascot, to have statues of a Turkey in town,
and to call yourself a Hokie, which my son does with enormous pride.
He loves the campus, his studies, and the people of that university.

The unspeakable tragedy of this Monday morning in Norris Hall and
West Ambler Johnston Hall is particularly difficult to comprehend,
because of its scale, because of its stark contrast to the peaceful
beauty of VT&#39;s campus, and the love and care demonstrated by VT&#39;s
students and faculty. The tragedy is also an enormous contrast to
the common mission that we share in the joy of learning and teaching.

It will take many years before we will be able to see how the good
resulting from this tragedy could possibly be greater than the pain
of this week. Although I have not experienced the depth of loss now
present at VT, I do pray that I will become a better person because
of this week. I pray that I will value more greatly the enormous
privilege of being at a university with students, staff, and
colleagues. I pray that I will more dearly love the students, staff
and faculty on this campus and will work more diligently to serve
others.

I will close by reading a few words from my colleague, the Virignia
Tech Engineering Dean, Richard Benson. I have been in his office on
the 3rd floor of Norris Hall, the floor above where most of the
deaths occurred. I was at a meeting with Dean Benson Monday morning
in another city when he received the urgent message about the first
shootings. Here is a part of what Dean Benson wrote to his
Engineering students and faculty:

"My heart aches for the lives of the students lost. These bright
young men and women were in the prime of life, planning for rich,
fulfilling futures. They came to Virginia Tech to acquire an
education; an education that would forever change their lives...

"The murdered faculty members had devoted their lives to scholarship
and education. They so beautifully embodied Virginia Tech&#39;s motto of
Ut Prosim - that I may serve.

"Virginia Tech is a noble place. It is a nobility born of our great
Land Grant tradition, a nobility born of a place of learning. Young
women and men - many of modest beginnings - come here to learn. We
ask that they work hard - and they do

"While our loss is huge and our grief unbearable, the nobility of
this great community of scholars is undiminished. Those of us that
survive, and those that will come after will continue to dedicate
themselves to teaching and learning. And we will never forget the
friends that we lost. As long as there is a Virginia Tech they will
be remembered. They are more than friends. They are family."

We are here as members of the Cornell family. But this week we are
also members of the VT family. This week it is an honor and a
privilege join with those at VT and to call ourselves Hokies.

REMARKS BY PRESIDENT DAVID J. SKORTON

We Are One

We are one; one community, one people, one planet.

We are here today to affirm that one-ness and to draw strength from
each other, to find peace in each other, to care for each other and
to share our love.

We are one.

We are here to bear witness to the passing of the 33 members of our
family at Virginia Tech University who have met an untimely and
terrible fate.

We are here for all of those who are gone, for all 33.

We are here for the 32 who have passed from the immediate to another
place, not by their own choice.

We are also here for the 1 who has also passed.

We are one.

We are here to join arms and hearts with the families, friends and
colleagues of all of these individuals.

We are here to join with our friends in the Korean and Korean-
American communities for we are all one family, most especially today
we share the same sorrow and the same need for comfort and reassurance.

We are one.

We are here to recognize that there are many issues to discuss, many
plans to be made, many disagreements to be settled, causes to be
sought, remedies to be conceived -- but not today, not now. Now, we
are here to comfort and be comforted, to remember.

We are one.

We are here to seek meaning, to make sense out of the senseless, to
somehow find a way to move forward.

We are here to find courage, to find a way to still believe in
tomorrow, a tomorrow without fear, a tomorrow that still has endless
possibilities.

We are here to affirm the importance of openness on our campuses, the
openness that permits us to be together in this way, in this place,
at this time.

We are one.

We are together today to look both backward and forward, to look both
within and without, to look at the person next to us and at
ourselves, to find our bearings, our place.

We will stay together, we will go forward together, we will never
forget our loss.

We are one.

REMARKS BY PROVOST CAROLYN "BIDDY" MARTIN

On Monday morning I was in my native Virginia at my mother&#39;s home
when word began to break of the shootings at Virginia Tech. On the
local Roanoke news, there were anchors who were graduates of Virginia
Tech, and we received the news from people who knew and loved the
campus. One of the many things that struck me in the coverage that
day was the dignity of the students who were approached for
interviews--their humility, their respect, their unwillingness to
offer superficial commentary, and their resistance to easy analysis
and the assigning of blame. In their responses to questions, they
made a plea, sometimes implicitly, other times directly. What did
they ask of the journalists and, also, of us? That we not reduce
their university or their experience of it to this horror, this
unspeakable tragedy, that Virginia Tech not be defined only by that
spectacular phrase that we have heard so often since Monday-"the
biggest massacre in U.S. history." In their efforts to defend
against this stain, the students kept open a space of thought and
reflection.

The media rushes, understandably, to cover the event, and the events
become spectacle, compounding the effects of depersonalization as
journalists and the public press for immediate and abbreviated
responses and analyses. How extraordinary, under those
circumstances, were the efforts of the students and alumni to express
their love of Virginia Tech, of one another, to hold open the gap
between their experience of the place and the violence and death that
were coming to define it. They had been robbed of friends, of
classmates, and of teachers; they had had the taken-for-granted
safety of the dorm room and the classroom shattered. They have lost
for now a sense of safety in the thrilling openness of university
campus. They did not want, in addition, to be robbed of their
experience of the place or their attachment to it; did not want their
murdered friends, classmates and teachers to be remembered only for
the horrifying way in which their lives were taken. Just as the
names and stories of the victims began to give a human scale and
texture to an otherwise surreally traumatic and depersonalizing
event, so, too, the students&#39; reserve and their claims to the
totality of their experience and attachment began to restore to them
all that they have learned and loved at Virginia Tech. In their
expressions of pride, they fight to have life and attachment prevail
over the isolation, illness, and rage that appear to have been major
factors in this horror.

It is not difficult for Cornellians to answer the students&#39; call, to
attach to Virginia Tech, out of compassion, and with a capacious
understanding of what Virginia Tech is and what it represents. Like
Cornell, it was founded in the 1870s as a land grant university, and
it is beloved throughout the state of Virginia for its remarkable
contributions for over a century and a quarter to the state, the
nation, and the rest of the world. It is nestled among some of the
most beautiful and gentlest mountains in the Appalachians, and even
in this cold Virginia April, has already displayed wild profusions of
yellow forsythia and daffodils (or jonquils, as my mother would say),
pink and white dogwood, and the beginnings of that splash of color
that only azaleas can produce in the turn toward Spring.

It is a university with a great faculty and great students, proud, in
particular, of its Agriculture and Life Sciences, its engineering,
and creative writing, the liberal arts, and its outreach and
extension, proud, too, of its legendary athletics teams. It is
beloved, as I have said, not only by students, faculty, staff and
alumni, but by the entire state of Virginia, even those who choose
the University of Virginia in the great rivalry between Virginia Tech
Hokies and Virginia Cavaliers that is one of Virginia&#39;s great
sports. This week, everyone is a Hokie fan. Already on Monday and
then on Tuesday and Wednesday, counties all over Virginia were
covered with Hokie colors, Virginians having donned Virginia Tech
sweatshirts and hats, some spontaneously, some at the urging of the
churches that were holding vigils.

At the convocation in Blacksburg on Tuesday, poet Nikki Giovanni used
her poetic genius to invoke, indeed, to activate a healing sense of
community and of perspective, linking the tragic deaths and injuries
at Virginia Tech to other tragedies in other parts of the world, and
emphasizing that none of them was deserved, also repeating, as
incantation, the words: "We are Virginia Tech," the emphasis on the
word "are," signaling the fact of being, of continuity, and a
commitment to life and to community. "We will prevail," she said,
but not by moving on, not by denying our shock or the many dimensions
of grief. We will prevail, she seemed to be saying, by going
straight through the effects of horror, together.

Here at Cornell let us remember what unites us in our shared
humanity, our shared vulnerability, our capacity, indeed, our
responsibility to attach to others, especially the most isolated.
Let us also risk even, and today, especially, a certain hokiness.
May life and attachment prevail over isolation, social deaths,
physical death, and violence, everywhere.

Please join me in a moment of silence in remembrance of Monday&#39;s
victims.</text>

In honor of the 33 lives lost during the Virginia Tech shooting on April 16, University students and community members held a candlelight vigil in the Erb Memorial Union Amphitheater on Monday night.

Tea lights dotted the photographs of the 33 victims that lined the bottom step of the amphitheater. Attendees quietly lit candles and wrote their thoughts to the victims&#39; friends and families on white pieces of paper that would later be sent to Virginia Tech.

University junior and family and human services major Jory Card organized the event through a Facebook group commemorating the victims of last week&#39;s shooting.

"These people are just like us - they could be your friends, your family," Card said to the crowd of about 60 attendees. "This is a time to be quiet with your friends and honor those who were lost."

---

<a href="http://media.www.dailyemerald.com/media/storage/paper859/news/2007/04/24/Video/Video.Campus.Mourns.Virginia.Tech-2876566.shtml">Watch video from the vigil</a>

---

University senior and journalism major Meghan Hilliard heard out about the event from Card, who is her roommate. Hilliard said she had a "reality check" when Card brought home the stack of 33 photographs of the victims later used for the vigil.

"The fact that the pictures take up the whole first row of our EMU amphitheater, I think is astounding," Hilliard said. "It&#39;s a real eye-opening visual because we hear of the 33 victims, but to see them is really impacting."

Lane Community College freshman Elizabeth Ashworth said she came to the vigil to pay respect to the Virginia Tech students and faculty.

"I realize how short life is and that it can be taken away, just like these people here," Ashworth said.

Ashworth heard about the vigil from her friend Megan Funke, a University freshman and psychology major, who also emphasized the importance of paying her respects to those affected by the shooting.

"If my friends were gone like this tomorrow, I don&#39;t know what I would do; it&#39;s such a huge tragedy." Funke said. "There are a lot of people whose lives (the victims) did affect, and I don&#39;t think that should be forgotten just because we&#39;re far away. "

Hilliard agreed that the far distance from Virginia Tech is unimportant, and that unfortunate events like the Virginia Tech shooting unite students across the country.

"In situations like this, campuses unite as one; campus lines are blurred since we&#39;re all going to school," Hilliard said. "This happened about 3,000 miles away, but it&#39;s still pertinent here and everywhere else."

Card said he wanted to bring students together one week after the shooting to remind them that they have "the ultimate say in our campus&#39; safety."

"I want to honor the victims and spark a change on campus to bring us together," Card said. "I&#39;d like to re-evaluate the true meaning of having a safe campus."

Card said that "safety" should extend further than "physical safety." People should also be respectful of those who have different opinions and backgrounds.

He asked the attendees: "How many times have you seen someone on 13th Avenue that you recognize and just ignore? I&#39;m guilty of it too. My challenge to you is to find a way to bring us together as a campus."

I am writing in response to Richard Poskozim&#39;s opinion piece in the 4/25 issue of The Lantern.

In the article, the author seems to imply that Cho&#39;s motivation to kill somehow originated from his alleged mental illness: "After everything that&#39;s come out about him, I think it&#39;s pretty safe to say his motivation was that he was crazy." While it is clear that something had deeply distressed Mr. Cho, one should be careful about jumping to conclusions about how mental illness played a role in this tragic event. Numerous studies have shown that it is incredibly rare for someone with a mental illness to commit gross acts of violence, especially on the scale of the Virginia Tech shootings. Violence is no more prevalent among individuals with mental illnesses than among the general public.

In actuality, those suffering from a mental illness are more likely to be the victims of violence than the perpetrators. Furthermore, I am concerned that the focus on the shooter&#39;s possible mental illness will cause many students on college campuses who suffer from mental illnesses to not seek mental health services or to be feared and shunned by their peers, leading to their further isolation and discrimination.

If any positives can come out of this horrible event, I hope that one will be a larger discussion about the need for increased recognition of mental health issues among college students and the need for adequate treatment, support and recovery resources on college campuses. I ask that The Lantern staff take this into consideration as they continue to cover the tragic circumstances surrounding the Virginia Tech shootings.

PUBLISHED APRIL 16, 2007

Thirty-two dead and dozens more wounded in Blacksburg. A Journalism School student raped, cut, and burned in Hamilton Heights. These are the twin horrors—baffling, appalling, and without reason—that greeted Columbia&#39;s community on Monday.

Sadistic acts are lamentable and far-too-common features of the human experience. Each successive day brings with it reports of gut-wrenching atrocities, many on a greater scale than these two attacks, most eliciting a quieter outcry. But our empathy and fear operate in analogues, so it gives us special pause when senseless brutality impacts those bound to us through shared educational experience, whether at Columbia or a peer institution.

In these cases, we cannot help but ask why, how, and most alarmingly whether such incidents could recur, but the replies do little to diminish the widespread sense of confusion and grief. One wonders what train of thought led someone to butcher a room full of fellow human beings or brutalize a lone victim, but the causes seem to defy reason, and the savagery yields few good answers. Violence, author Jean Genet wrote, is a calm that disturbs you.

In the coming days, much will be said about prevention: what could have been and should be done to forestall such acts of cruelty. This is a good and crucial discussion, but, sadly, one that cannot erase the pain inflicted on the victims and those close to them. Time may bring a degree of distance and comfort, but investigation will only supply the how—never the root causes, the why.

We offer, as do all, our deepest condolences to those affected by these crimes, and we hope that the coming weeks will offer them some measure of healing.

By Cornelia Hall
Princetonian Staff Writer

Richard Benson &#39;73, dean of the Virginia Tech College of Engineering, has spent the last three days struggling to maintain composure while confronting his own grief over the deaths of his colleagues and students.

In his first media interview since Monday&#39;s shooting, Benson relived his emotions in the aftermath of the incident, praising the nation&#39;s sympathy and the cohesiveness of Virginia Tech&#39;s campus while reflecting on ways to move forward.

Benson was at a conference in Puerto Rico when the tragic violence unfolded Monday morning.

The gunman, Virginia Tech senior Cho Seung-Hui, shot two people in a dormitory before moving, around two hours later, to Norris Hall, a central building in the School of Engineering and home to Benson&#39;s office. Cho shot and killed 30 people in Norris Hall before taking his own life.

Benson, who majored in mechanical and aerospace engineering at Princeton, was attending an Engineering Deans Institute meeting over the weekend. He first heard about the shooting when he checked his email during a coffee break and read that there was a gunman loose on campus. It was only when he switched on the television at his hotel that he saw that the shooting had moved to Norris.

It was then that the reality of the situation hit home for Benson. "That&#39;s my building ... I walk through those doors every day," he said of Norris Hall. "It was just terrible to see that and not to be there."

Upon hearing the news, Benson first tried to call his staff members in Norris Hall. "I was unable to get anybody, anybody," he said. He immediately booked a flight home and waited through flight delays and a layover to arrive in Blacksburg after midnight. "I would&#39;ve gotten in a car and driven home," he said.

His distance from his campus when the violence unfolded made the tragedy even more devastating, Benson said.

"Being away heightened my emotional reaction," he said, adding that he repeatedly thought about how it was "very likely that people that I cared for had died."

Though Benson&#39;s assistant, Linda Perkins, and his chief of staff, Ed Nelson, survived, he said he knew of people down the hall from his office and on a lower floor who had been killed. Of the five deceased faculty members, three taught at the Engineering School.

<i> Lessons from the massacre </i>

Benson said he did not blame the Virginia Tech administration for its widely reported delay in notifying the campus community of the first shooting. While some students and parents have accused the Virginia Tech administration of not doing enough to prevent the escalation of violence by alerting the student body of the danger, Benson said he disagrees.

"I understand grief, and I understand why somebody would be really angry," Benson added, emphasizing that he did not fault the students or their families in any way for criticizing the administration. "There&#39;s a human desire to blame somebody, [but] I worry that we&#39;re going to start blaming people who worked like crazy, who are grief-stricken, who didn&#39;t sleep that night."

Benson also stressed the extreme improbability that the shooter would strike a second time. "A two-site crime is extraordinarily rare," he said. "People were trying really hard to find the person who did it ... I do believe that the authorities were responding very quickly, very ably."

Yet the reverberations from the violence are likely to continue indefinitely. "You can always do better," Benson said of the University&#39;s response to the incident. "We&#39;ve learned something in the last two days."

Administrators from other institutions have been contacting him to offer condolences and to ask the question, "How can we prevent this?" The incident has prompted concerns about campus safety across the nation.

Though Benson acknowledged the importance of developing preventive measures for academic communities everywhere, he said he knows that the next step for Virginia Tech is to deal with the emotional repercussions.

"The point is [that] we know that we need to provide a lot of counseling, and we&#39;re going to do that," he said. Department heads will convene today to address the issue of counseling services not only for students but for faculty, Benson said, adding that he hoped this would help them better support students emotionally.

"I want our faculty [to be] as insightful as they can possibly be," he said. "And frankly, they also need counseling."

The most affected faculty members are likely those who were in Norris Hall when the violence unfolded. Benson described the experiences of several of his colleagues while Cho was in the building. One professor, Liviu Librescu, barricaded the door of a classroom to allow his students to escape through the windows, Benson said in a widely distributed email. Librescu, a Holocaust survivor, was shot through the door.

"Heroes! Never forget their names!" Benson wrote.

<i>A campus transformed</i>

Norris Hall is forever changed, as the Virginia Tech community will always associate it with the horror that occurred there. Benson acknowledged that it is a place marked with emotion.

"Many of us aren&#39;t ready to walk into that building, not yet," he said. "There is an enormous job in Norris Hall to come to grips with the magnitude of the killing that went on there."

Until the end of the semester, only investigators will be allowed in the building.

Monday&#39;s events will also have academic ramifications, Benson said. While some classes will be relocated to other campus buildings, "some courses will just end."

One graduate course taught by civil and environmental engineering professor G.V. Loganathan will simply be eliminated, Benson said, since Cho shot the professor and the majority of students in the class.

Despite the shock, horror and grief overwhelming the Virginia Tech campus, Benson said he cannot help but be moved by the outpouring of emotion he has witnessed. "There&#39;s something very beautiful unfolding at Virginia Tech," he said, attributing the campus&#39; unity to the spirit of compassion pervading the student body.

"I have been hearing over and over and over again, on the radio and on TV, how struck people are by that spirit, and I think it&#39;s absolutely true," he said. "All of these people wanted to let their pride come through."

Faculty members, too, provided sympathy, offering their offices to those displaced from Norris Hall.

His voice breaking, Benson expressed his pride and respect for the students. "Despite the horror, you take away something really uplifting," he said. "Boy, they are just banding together."

Staff Reporter

The Virginia Tech massacre by a South Korean student shocked the entire nation, including netizens.

On Tuesday, netizens posted articles expressing their shock as well as paying condolences to the victims of the tragedy. On portal Web sites, special categories were made to express how sorry they feel for the victims and their survivors.

Everyone said that there should never be violence that threaten other people&#39;s freedom and lives.

After CNN and other reports broke the news that the suspect is Cho Seung-hui, a native Korean living in the United States with a green card, many people were astonished.

``I couldn&#39;t believe that someone like me was really involved in this brutal murder,&#39;&#39; a netizen (ID hahaha) said. Other people showed the same response as they said they have begun to feel more responsibility for the case when they found out that a Korean was involved.

Others said that the case looked similar to some cases happening in the Korean military where young soldiers try to desert from their barracks out of love or relationship issues.

There were also rising concerns over the safety of Koreans living in the U.S. According to some reports, in Centerville, where Cho has lived with his family, American students throwing bread at Korean students were reported. In Los Angeles, some students were threatened by their peers who told them to go back to their own country.

``At the moment many people are concentrating on the issue of private weapons, and there are not many people accusing Koreans. However, I assume there will be some more talking about his ethnicity, and the hatred will pour out,&#39;&#39; another netizen (ID: Menia) said.

Some are concerned whether the case would bring a bad image to the country and work as a setback to issues the country is trying to push such as a visa waiver or hosting PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

Those who are willing to visit or study in the U.S. are worried over the possibility that getting visas would become more difficult. ``Back in 2001, I remember that getting a visa was quite difficult right after the Sept. 11 tragedy and I hope it would not happen this time,&#39;&#39; said Koh, a 25-year-old student who is planning to study in the U.S.

There are also questions raised over studying abroad at a very young age _ quite the fashion in Korea at the moment. As domestic media in the U.S. referred to Cho as a ``loner,&#39;&#39; people are now questioning whether sending their kids abroad for study is a good idea.

There were constant reports of children feeling lonely and causing problems with drinking, doing drugs or having sex problems, but the massacre has triggered the debate on whether such studying is really needed.

Cho flew to America when he was a little kid, and is said to have not made himself accustomed to the different culture. ``I think his being alone made him a loner, and made him do something horrible. And would you still say that won&#39;t happen to your child?&#39;&#39; a blogger grandchyren asked.

The netizens plan to hold a candle vigil for the victims of the massacre at the Seoul City Hall plaza on Sunday evening.

The university community was stunned Monday morning when a gunman killed more than 30 people, including students, at Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, Va.

Though more than 1,000 miles separate the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus from Virginia Tech, UNL students and faculty members felt shock as well. University Police said they have made plans for a response to similar emergencies.

David Solheim, the president of the Association of Students of the University of Nebraska, said the incident was almost surreal.

"I couldn&#39;t believe that something like this would happen on a college campus," said Solheim, a senior economics and international studies major. "It really makes you take your own daily life into perspective."

Ali Moeller, the president of the Academic Senate, also expressed disbelief at the shootings in an e-mail interview.

"It is difficult to find the words to describe such a monumental tragedy," she said.

Moeller also said she was angry that laws allowed the shooter to have a weapon.

"The lives of so many young men and women erased by the bullets of a madman is incomprehensible," she said.

Capt. Carl Oestmann of University Police said the department is prepared for situations such as this.

The preparation includes the ability to notify people of an emergency, plans to restrict access to academic and residence halls and investments in law enforcement equipment.

Oestmann said University Police also has working relationships with other law enforcement agencies in the city, county and state.

"It takes a combination of all of the systems to work together," he said.

Solheim said Mobile Campus, a service ASUN has looked into investing in, could be a beneficial contact tool for the university in such emergency situations as the shootings at Virginia Tech. The service would allow UNL to send text messages to students.

Though some might find the service expensive, it could be worth it, he said.

"How much value do you put on a life?" Solheim said.

Oestmann also offered his condolences to the Virginia Tech campus.

In a late afternoon statement, Virginia Tech President Charles Steger said the university had already received condolences and messages of support from around the world. He said the well wishes were appreciated as the university worked to move forward in the next few days.

"I cannot begin to convey my own personal sense of loss over the senselessness of such an incomprehensible and heinous act," he said.

A convocation will be held on Virginia Tech&#39;s campus today to help students and faculty members grieve.

From her dorm room at Virginia Tech, Rachel Gicquelais, a freshman biology major, said she looks forward to attending.

"I may not know anyone personally who died," Gicquelais said, "but I know all of us are going to be affected by the fact that part of our student body is gone."

Gicquelais said she was in class when she found out about the first shooting, which took place in a residence hall around 7 a.m., leaving two dead. While the students in her class discussed the rumors behind that shooting, her building went into lockdown, she said.

After waiting in the classroom for a couple hours, where her teaching assistant let the students go online to look for updates, Gicquelais was allowed to walk back to her dorm.

Gicquelais had to take an alternative route back to her dorm, as the normal path would have taken her by Norris Hall, where 31 people were killed, including the gunman.

Gicquelais said university officials kept students informed with frequent e-mails. Despite the shootings earlier in the day, she said the university did its best to ensure the safety of students.

For the rest of the day, Gicquelais was glued to the television and Internet for updates. Watching the video footage of the campus has been strange for her, she said.

"I know exactly where the videos are taken," she said. "I&#39;ve walked where they are."

<text>Anyone who is not living an incredibly secluded life (if you are, can I join you there?) has probably heard about the tragedy at Virginia Tech. where a gunman killed some 33 people, including himself. I&#39;ve struggled whether to weigh in on this or not, but I felt that I would do so because I feel like a lot of the subtext of what is being said is awful.

First and foremost, as a Christian, I am praying for those actually affected by this. Friends, families and Virginia Tech&#39;s students and faculty are hurting right now. God of all comfort, be near to them and somehow work this evil towards good. Christ, have mercy.

I implore people to not use this as a springboard for their agendas. Gun control lobbyists, anti-video game lobbyists and people of this ilk: I&#39;m talking about you. While you may have some valid points, just shut up for a while and grieve with those who are mourning.

I also understand that, in pain, people want someone to blame. Since the killer committed suicide, he does not prevent the convenient target. Please don&#39;t turn the school&#39;s president and the the chief of campus police into scapegoats to satisfy your pain-fueled desire for justice. Guess what: there won&#39;t be any here. The pain won&#39;t go away just because you feel like you have someone to blame.

To the news media: you disgust me. Human suffering is not a commodity to be packaged, sensationalized and delivered to consumers. You&#39;re a pack of vultures; a bunch of parasites of pain. Stop giving voice to the lobbyists who want to twist this for their own cause. Learn to listen, learn to suffer with those who are suffering. Tell us what&#39;s happening, and get the hell out of the way. Please.

To those who will inevitably say, "let&#39;s ensure this never happens again," I have news for you: you can&#39;t do that. What you can do is learn to live a life that is full of joy and pain amidst many uncertainties. I&#39;m not saying that nothing can be done, but I am saying that fear and pain do not drive anyone to make good decisions about the way things can be.

Every crisis is an opportunity. Let us not miss out, no matter how ugly the package this crisis came in.

                <text>Por Pierre Lemieux
23 de abril de 2007

Virginia Tech (Blacksburg), Columbine (Colorado), Polytechnique (Canadá), Dunblane (Escocia), Jonesboro (Arkansas), Nickel Mines (Pensilvania), y Dawson College (Canadá).
