But this tragedy seems to have brought out the best in most Americans. Koreans initially took the news hard. Lee Tae-sik, South Korea&#39;s ambassador to the United States, suggested that Koreans in the U.S. fast for 32 days, one day for each victim. President Roh Moo-hyun devoted a press conference to the story; the Ministry of Foreign Affairs felt compelled to issue a statement. Cardinal Nicolas Cheong Jin-suk said, ``As a South Korean, I can&#39;t help feeling apologetic about how a Korean man caused such a shocking incident.&#39;&#39; Many in the United States followed with apologies of their own. Not everyone found this outpouring of apologies so admirable. One Los Angeles talk show host accused Korean-Americans of using the tragedy to stimulate sympathy for their community through a display of exaggerated contrition. He accused them of ``playing the race card.&#39;&#39; Now look who&#39;s stereotyping? An online Korean news source offered its own retort. ``It&#39;s an overreaction. It&#39;s doubtful whether the South Korean reaction will really help anyone.&#39;&#39; Perhaps it&#39;s now time to reflect on what it was that disconcerted Korean-Americans in the first place? If it was only fear of reprisals by other Americans, they were remarkably off-base. Their fellow Americans saw no more reason to target Korean-Americans than to go after gun shop operators or college administrators and hold them responsible for the shootings. Equally unfounded were any fears that the horrific crime would somehow impact the special status Korea enjoys in the United States, with more foreign students hailing from Korea than any other country, including China and India. Our country isn&#39;t that kind of place. Even more inappropriate were any pangs of guilt, a feeling that often defies understanding. Several times a year I get cold-calls from Germany, with someone on the other end seeking catharsis for guilt feelings about the Holocaust. Inevitably, the caller was born after the war, and was in no manner or form involved in the extermination of Jews. I do my best to assure the other party that one cannot be guilty for something that one did not do. Premature fear and unfounded guilt do not account for the extent of the Korean reaction. Apologies come with a price - a large price of losing face - in Asian cultures. (Witness the continuing outrage generated over ``comfort women&#39;&#39; appropriated for the pleasure of Japanese soldiers in World War II, and the tentative and strained form of the very delayed apology.) So there must be something of greater substance to elicit such profuse announcements of regret in the Korean community. Guilt has a first cousin, less anxiety-laden, and often a tool for positive action. A few weeks ago, six German teens visited a Jewish high school in Los Angeles. The Germans had all been involved in the translation of a book about a Jewish family during the Holocaust. They entertained questions. ``Do you feel guilty?&#39;&#39; one YULA student asked the guests. ``No. But I do feel greatly ashamed,&#39;&#39; the German teen responded. We feel shame for the actions of others only when we identify with those others so much that we have made room for them in our own identities. We do this often enough, in ways that are neutral (rooting for our favorite sports team) or negative (shunning outsiders, when we are tribal or jingoistic.) It is not surprising at all for people to feel so much for the larger group that all of its emotional charge the defeats and embarrassments as well as the victories redounds to each member. But strongly identifying with a larger group can be a wonderful tool for social responsibility and change. Good intentions often become nothing more than slogans when they are not transformed into action. Deciding where to act was much more intuitive before the world became a global village, where the efforts of any individual are dwarfed by the enormity of each problem. Groups that can take responsibility for whatever they perceive as ``their own&#39;&#39; have an advantage over people for whom all beneficiaries are equally attractive. Having too many places to park one&#39;s compassion and largesse is often the equivalent of having no place at all. Koreans sometimes see themselves as of a ``single blood&#39;&#39; or ethnicity, with a long memory of oppression at the hands of two much stronger peoples (the Chinese and Japanese) that took turns at invading them. Koreans may have had good reason to develop a strong sense of the collective. (More of that sense ought to be made available to a feckless Korean government in its non-activity on behalf of tens of thousands of relatives trapped for decades north of the 38thh Parallel. Cho Seung-Hui was the quintessential loner. He felt for no one, and connected with no one. The Korean reaction of bonding and responsibility was the polar opposite of the life-style that Cho practiced. It was an appropriate and humane reaction, not to be scorned but applauded and maybe at the right time, emulated. Although I can speak only for myself, I feel a primeval sense of horror that someone connected to me by ethnicity could commit such a foul act against everything we hold sacred and decent in our common humanity. Of course this was an act of a lone, disturbed individual who could have been from any race or ethnicity, but I cannot deny that his being ethnically Korean somehow brands me with a mental Scarlet Letter that is visible only to me but nevertheless seethes painfully against the screen of my self-identity as a Korean. While being an ethnic Korean neither automatically qualifies nor obligates me to speak to this horrible heartbreak any more than any one else, there is a terrible connection here that is inexplicable yet all too easy to feel. Judging by the outpouring of anger, condolences, and grief from Koreans everywhere, I am apparently not alone in feeling a terrible connection to this tragedy. However, I was surprised at the angry resentment that many Koreans, while sympathetic to the victims, feel at this terrible connection forced upon all Koreans by the killer&#39;s ethnic identity. This resentment could be felt in the reactions at Ambassador Lee&#39;s words at an emotional gathering the day in which the world found out that the killer was a Korean. His use of the word, ``apology,&#39;&#39; elicited a heated public debate. Many felt that, given his position, it was inappropriate. Some felt that he actually put Koreans in danger by somehow painting all of us with collective guilt. Still others felt just angry that he would apologize for something that we Koreans had absolutely nothing to do with. All these criticism are valid. Perhaps Ambassador Lee did go overboard in his choice of words. However, we must consider the context. This was the evening of the day in which we found out that the perpetrator of the worst mass killing in the U.S. history was a Korean student, and Ambassador Lee was speaking as the representative of all Koreans living in America. You would be lying if you, as a Korean, did not feel a certain sense of dread and fear upon hearing the news. You would be lying if you, as a Korean, did not recall the violence of LA riots 15 years ago or the fear of Brooklyn boycotts. You would be lying if you, as a Korean, did not feel more vulnerable and targeted than just a moment before. Of course, you have every right to feel resentful over having to feel more vulnerable just because a crazy killer happened to be a Korean. No one likes to feel powerless. But that does not change the fact that you do feel more vulnerable. As a Korean American who emigrated to the United States in the third grade _ exactly like the perpetrator _ I certainly felt all these and more in the hour that I heard the news of the killer&#39;s identity. I felt the fear because I know how racially divided American society can be just underneath the surface. Just because it&#39;s unfair for a group to be collectively labeled by the actions of an individual, it does happen all too easily _ for example, just examine how we Koreans generally think about African Americans to realize how powerful and widespread racial prejudice can be. I felt the dread because I know how the perpetrator&#39;s ethnic identity could lead, in the irrational emotions of the moment, to wrongs against those Koreans who had nothing do to with this horrible incident. We know that racial prejudice can be powerfully harmful and subject innocent people to unfair treatment. There are always those who will seek to confuse and divide us by using such tragedies as a podium for their hate and prejudice. And there are always who listen to the hate. This is why my first thoughts went to my parents working at a small drycleaners in a New York suburb and how scared they might feel listening to the news. Not because there were any specific threats. Not because the neighborhood has been nothing less than safe and welcoming for them. But because hate and prejudice will seize upon any excuse to do violence. I know that Ambassador Lee does not technically represent me since I am a naturalized citizen of the U.S. But I also know that someone looking for an excuse for his anger will not be checking my citizenship papers. In a pluralistic society, it&#39;s our appearance that defines us first. We, as Koreans, are connected to this tragedy through the identity of the killer, whether we like it or not. And this leaves us feeling more vulnerable, even if only in our own minds. Therefore, I thank you, Ambassador Lee, for your apology. While you may have gone overboard in your choice of words, I know that you spoke out of your concern for the safety of all Koreans living here in the U.S. I know that you sought to show mainstream America that we Koreans were as devastated by the tragedy at Virginia Tech as anyone else and, thereby, prevent Koreans from being singled out by the inevitability of racial profiling of today&#39;s American society. I thank you because I know your words made a difference. Though many journalists have written about the 23-year-old Cho Seung-hui and his victims, I&#39;m adding my two cents as I can&#39;t help thinking about him. Human beings are like china made of the same clay and a few other elements. No matter how great or vulgar a person is, the common things he shares with others far outnumbers the differences he has. The similarity, so to speak, is the ocean and the differences, the sea foam. Whether it&#39;s God or genes that create them, it is apparent that too much or too little of some ingredients are put into certain men and women. For Jean-Baptiste Grenouille in Patrick Suskind&#39;s ``Perfume,&#39;&#39; it is human scent that he is born without and the lack of it turns him into a serial killer obsessed with perfume. For Anna in Leo Tolstoy&#39;s ``Anna Karenin,&#39;&#39; her dazzling beauty is the starting point of the tragedy she will live through. People&#39;s lives are usually ruled by their excessive or deficient qualities owing to the human tendency to determine who is desirable or not on the basis of the small disparities. Babies are babies, but babbling, smiling ones are loved whereas crying, autistic ones are shunned. Seung-hui seems to have had too much silence from early childhood, a trait reportedly attributable to his father. For senior Cho, his quietness may not have been a serious social hindrance in his youth because such a quality had been regarded as a male virtue in his native Korea until recent years. For the eight-year-old immigrant Seung-hui, however, his reticence must have incurred double trouble as American culture cherishes expression, particularly verbal and articulate. The pressure to talk, let alone the stress of adopting an unfamiliar language, must have been a gigantic challenge for the boy. Psychiatrists and psychologists debate whether Seung-hui could have avoided committing his crime had he lived in the country of his birth. Well, he might have been less lonely here. He could at least understand what others were saying and his mother might have spent more time with him. In the U.S. she had to work long hours outside home. He might have grown up as an incomprehensible, unnoticed man like his father. He might have fostered a home-grown discontent and destroyed himself and others but after a more time-consuming preparation due to the unavailability of guns here. While agreeing that he is a complex case of depression and derangement, the specialists continue to ask: ``Did he do that because of mournful love, or of anger for racial prejudice and/or maltreatment by his classmates, or frustration over prolonged economic difficulties?&#39;&#39; As a lay analyst, I don&#39;t think disasters, whether natural or man-made, come from one distinguishable cause. Time and conditions must have been ripe for Seung-hui to let out his anger, which had been brewing ever since he was side-glanced for being different. Many of us share his weakness, loneliness, frustration, anger and despair, but we can avoid being branded like him just because we have a little less of everything. Given the ever-spreading unfairness towards people who are considered different, Seung-hui may not be the last dangerous oddball to shock the global community in such a gruesome way. Tens of thousand are struggling against biased perceptions others have of them and they may turn into a second or third Seung-hi if their striving doesn&#39;t pay off. The best way to keep them among us would be to recognize how alike they and we are and celebrate the similarities together. If they have to vent their frustration, they should be helped to find better means than guns, which should be banned no matter what. On Tuesday, netizens posted articles expressing their shock as well as paying condolences to the victims of the tragedy. On portal Web sites, special categories were made to express how sorry they feel for the victims and their survivors. Everyone said that there should never be violence that threaten other people&#39;s freedom and lives. After CNN and other reports broke the news that the suspect is Cho Seung-hui, a native Korean living in the United States with a green card, many people were astonished. ``I couldn&#39;t believe that someone like me was really involved in this brutal murder,&#39;&#39; a netizen (ID hahaha) said. Other people showed the same response as they said they have begun to feel more responsibility for the case when they found out that a Korean was involved. Others said that the case looked similar to some cases happening in the Korean military where young soldiers try to desert from their barracks out of love or relationship issues. There were also rising concerns over the safety of Koreans living in the U.S. According to some reports, in Centerville, where Cho has lived with his family, American students throwing bread at Korean students were reported. In Los Angeles, some students were threatened by their peers who told them to go back to their own country. ``At the moment many people are concentrating on the issue of private weapons, and there are not many people accusing Koreans. However, I assume there will be some more talking about his ethnicity, and the hatred will pour out,&#39;&#39; another netizen (ID: Menia) said. Some are concerned whether the case would bring a bad image to the country and work as a setback to issues the country is trying to push such as a visa waiver or hosting PyeongChang Winter Olympics. Those who are willing to visit or study in the U.S. are worried over the possibility that getting visas would become more difficult. ``Back in 2001, I remember that getting a visa was quite difficult right after the Sept. 11 tragedy and I hope it would not happen this time,&#39;&#39; said Koh, a 25-year-old student who is planning to study in the U.S. There are also questions raised over studying abroad at a very young age _ quite the fashion in Korea at the moment. As domestic media in the U.S. referred to Cho as a ``loner,&#39;&#39; people are now questioning whether sending their kids abroad for study is a good idea. There were constant reports of children feeling lonely and causing problems with drinking, doing drugs or having sex problems, but the massacre has triggered the debate on whether such studying is really needed. Cho flew to America when he was a little kid, and is said to have not made himself accustomed to the different culture. ``I think his being alone made him a loner, and made him do something horrible. Many Koreans have shown a collective guilt after the killer was found to be of Korean descent. But many Americans have said Koreans have no reason to feel guilty for the killing. ``I understand why some Koreans are feeling a collective guilt, and I think in some context it makes sense. But Korea is not the United States and what makes sense in Korea sometimes doesn&#39;t work the same way in the U.S,&#39;&#39; said Thomas Kim, executive director of the Korea Policy Institute (KPI) and professor of Politics & International Relations at Scripps College. In an e-mail interview, the Korean-American political scientist said, ``No white American in the U.S. felt the need to apologize because a white person _ U.S. military veteran Timothy McVeigh _ killed hundreds in the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995. Kim also used as an example the two school girls run over by a U.S. tank in 2002, which stirred civic group activists to organize anti-American rallies in Korea. ``When the two girls were run over by a U.S. tank, Americans did not feel any collective guilt. Americans weren&#39;t even aware of it,&#39;&#39; he said. He and many other Korean analysts said Americans viewed it as a pure car accident, which angered Koreans at that time. The misunderstanding came out cultural differences between the two countries. The U.S. Embassy in Korea last week categorized the Virginia incident as a domestic issue for which Koreans do not need to feel any guilt. Washington has shown reluctance over Seoul&#39;s plan to dispatch a condolence mission to the United States and to have public offices fly their flags at half-mast. President Roh Moo-hyun expressed his deep condolence for the victims and the family members three times to apologize for the fact that the shooter is an ethnic Korean. In its latest edition, Time Magazine reported that South Koreans&#39; collective sense of regret and guilt has manifested itself since the massacre at Virginia Tech. The magazine said ``The strong tendency of Koreans to perceive the tragedy in terms of Korean nationalism, in which the group trumps the individual&#39;&#39; is behind the unique national sentiment. Kim pointed out, ``There are innocent people who are victimized every day by young men from all different backgrounds, and what they share is having grown up in a society that glorifies violence and allows easy access to guns.&#39;&#39; He added it is time to shift the focus of the issue from ethnicity to finding the structural causes to prevent the reoccurrence of the tragic incident. ``Rather than focus on his race or ethnicity, we need to address why so many troubled young men in the United States feel that violence is their only outlet. Only then can we address the systemic causes of violence in the U.S,&#39;&#39; Kim said. Christine Ahn, fellow at the KPI, said Saturday on the MSNBC Today Show that it has been taboo for Koreans to speak publicly about mental illness. Even a U.S. university sent a letter of assurance to international students after police had confirmed the university shooter was a native of South Korea. ``Friends told me some Koreans who were living Richmond, the state capital, were hit and even Korean-owned stores were robbed,&#39;&#39; Choi Min-jin, 27, told The Korea Times in a telephone interview yesterday from Centreville, VA. She said tensions around Centreville were high as this was where Cho Seung-hui, the shooter lived. ``I am so scared to go outside as hostility against Koreans seems high,&#39;&#39; she added. A student in Virginia Tech said Korean students were hesitating to go to the school&#39;s cafeteria for fear of possible retaliation. ``They gather in threes or fours when they go out for lunch or buying something. Some of my friends stayed in their dormitory all day long,&#39;&#39; the student, said on condition of anonymity. Indiana University also advised its international students to report inappropriate behavior on the campus or in the community if it happens, a copy of an assurance letter obtained by the Times shows. ``While we believe it is unlikely that you will experience inappropriate behavior on campus or in the community, I am writing to assure you of our continued concern for your well-being and our commitment to provide you with assistance and support during your time at Indiana University,&#39;&#39; Christopher J. Koreans, especially those living in America, are still fearful that the recent Virginia Tech tragedy would spawn an anti-Korean backlash but Americans in general have extended their hand of support to Koreans, claiming that this incident had nothing to do with race. Rather, they say, it was the case of a deeply troubled young man. Following the tragedy, readers worldwide sent dozens of letters to The Korea Times to express their views on the massacre. ``Not once has anyone blamed this on Korea, Koreans, or the fact that this troubled young man was of Korean heritage,&#39;&#39; American D. Rittner wrote in an e-mail to The Korea Times. ``It is important for Koreans to realize that Americans do not blame Korea or Korean people for the psychotic crimes of Cho Seung-hui, just because he happened to be Korean. What is surprising to Americans, and regrettable, is that some Koreans actually expect Americans to somehow hate Koreans because of this tragedy. He added that on a national level, most Americans view South Korea with admiration, and consider the Korean people to be close partners. He said many American families or their adopted children are of Korean descent, and the personal bonds between Koreans and people of other backgrounds in America are strong. ``Therefore, for these reasons as well, to anticipate any wide-spread enmity developing toward Korean people in the United States is as unlikely as to expect a person to develop hatred toward his own brothers and sisters,&#39;&#39; he said. Contributor An entity responsible for making contributions to the resource Haeyong Chung Creator An entity primarily responsible for making the resource Hee Jeong Yoo Date A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource 2007-10-19 Description An account of the resource 미국 버지니아공대 총기 난사 사건에 대한 기사들을 보고 있으면 사건의 결과는 너무도 자명한 데 반해 전개 과정은 상대적으로 명료하게 연결이 안 되는 부분이 많다는 생각이 든다. 보다 더 모호한 것은 범인으로 밝혀진 조승희씨의 범행 동기이고 궁극적으로는 &#39;그가 과연 어떤 사람이었는가&#39;에 대한 해답이다. 과연 어떤 사람이었기에 상식적인 수준에서는 도저히 이해할 수 없는 사건을 일으킨 것일까? 죽은 이에 관한 글을 쓴다는 것은 매우 조심스럽다. 지금까지 밝혀진 그의 행적과 그가 남긴 단서들을 통해 누가 어떤 추측을 한다고 해도 그것은 단지 추론일 뿐이다. 그 성근 추론들 사이를 메우는 진실이라는 것은 결국 아무도 모르는 일일 가능성이 많다. 단지 그가 살아 있는 동안에 겪었을 수 있는 어려움들을 조금 일반화해 봄으로써 우리 사회에 또 다른 조승희가 출현할 가능성을 줄이려는 시도를 해보는 것이 고작 남아 있는 사람들이 할 수 있는 최선일 것이다. 몇 가지 키워드로 그를 추측해본다. 선언(Manifesto) 보도에 의하면 그는 첫 번째와 두 번째 범행 사이의 두 시간 동안 NBC 방송국에 자신의 &#39;선언&#39;을 담은 비디오를 만들어 보냈다. 그가 비디오에서 보여준 것은 굳은 표정, 격앙되어 있지만 어조의 변화가 없는 목소리, "가진 자들"이란 말로 짐작할 수 있는 타인에 대한 적개심과 거의 망상에 가까운 수준의 피해사고, 예수가 자신을 박해했다거나 머릿속에 암을 집어넣었다는 다소 기괴한 내용의 이야기들, 앞뒤가 잘 맞지 않는 사고(思考)의 흐름, 그리고 뭔가 공감하기 힘든 정서 등이었다. 정신과 의사의 눈으로 비디오에 나타난 모습을 보면, 그의 정신에는 심각한 균형의 상실, 즉 일종의 정신병적 상태가 나타났음에 틀림없어 보인다. 이 비디오를 보는 일반인이 &#39;정신병은 폭력적이고 위험하다&#39;는 오해를 갖게 되지 않을까 우려하게 될 정도로 그의 상태는 혼란스러워 보인다. 물론 정신병은 심리적 질환이 아니라 뇌의 질환임이 잘 알려져 있다. 인간의 뇌가 생각하고 감정을 느끼고 행동을 조절하는 시스템이 제대로 균형을 이루어 작동하지 못하면 정신병이 생긴다. 어떤 시스템에 고장이 일어났느냐에 따라 정신병의 종류가 나뉜다. 하지만 조승희씨의 경우, 뇌신경 시스템이 오랜 시간 신경세포에 가해진 부하(負荷)를 이기지 못하고 탈선해 버린 것이 아닐까 하는 생각이 들 만큼, 비디오에 나타난 그의 모습은 뭔가 좀 절박해 보인다. 무엇이 그의 뇌신경이 가진 적응능력을 잠식해 갔고, 또 무너지게 한 것일까? 외톨이 여러 보도에서 나온 조승희씨의 모습을 종합해보면, 그는 심지어 초등학교 때부터도 급우나 교사의 눈에 띄지 않고 기억에도 남아 있지 않은 소년이었다. 지독한 외톨이였고, 항상 말이 없고, 말을 걸어도 대답하지 않거나 대답하는 데 20초 정도 걸리고, 속삭이는 목소리로 답하고, 실내에서도 선글라스와 모자를 착용하고, 늘 혼자 방에서 지내고, 친구가 없는 것처럼 보이고, 틀어박혀 게임만 하고, 방에는 책상과 컴퓨터와 책밖에 없었으며, 뭔가 &#39;이상하고 석연찮은&#39; 사람이었다고 묘사되고 있다. 또 일부는 그가 고교시절 심각한 따돌림을 당했었다고 증언하고 있다. 그가 타인과의 관계를 거의 유지하지 않았기 때문에 그에 대한 이해 가능한 묘사를 얻는 데는 한계가 많지만, 적어도 그가 매우 오랜 기간 고립되어 왔다는 것은 사실인 것 같다. 그렇게 스스로를 고립시키는 &#39;패턴&#39;은 단기간에 형성되는 것이 아니다. 그런 특성이 성격과도 같이 공고할수록, 그 뿌리는 더 어린시절에 있기 마련이다. 추측컨대 그는 오랫동안 또래들로부터 따돌림을 당해왔을 것이며, 거기서 벗어나려는 나름의 시도는 번번이 실패했을 가능성이 있다. 그가 어릴 때부터 &#39;이상하고 석연찮은&#39; 기질을 갖고 있었기 때문에 또래들과 어울리기 어려웠는지, 아니면 또래들과 어울리지 못하다 보니 그런 사람이 된 것인지는 알 수 없다. 어쩌면 두 개의 고리가 서로 맞물린 악순환을 반복하고 있었는지도 모른다. 하지만 어떤 쪽이든 그 결과는 유사하다. 실제로 많은 아이가 학교폭력, 그리고 집단 따돌림의 피해자가 되고 있다. 이유는 여러 가지이다. 잘난 척해서, 장애가 있어서, 너무 소심하고 자기 주장을 하지 못해서 또는 너무 공격적이고 또래들을 배려하지 않아서 등 이유는 다양하다. 따돌림을 당하는 피해자는 우울하고 위축되며 자신감과 자존심의 손상, 수치심 그리고 크나큰 무력감을 경험한다. 동시에 가해자에 대한 분노와 증오를 마음속에 쌓아 두게 된다. 청소년기가 되어 신체적으로 성숙해지고 자기 주장이 강해지면 그렇게 축적된 분노와 증오는 점점 더 표면 위로 드러나게 된다. 하지만 따돌림의 희생자들은 어릴 때부터 건강한 또래 관계를 경험해보지 못했기에 자신의 부정적인 감정을 적절한 수위와 방법으로 표현하고 타인과 소통할 수 있는 방식을 잘 배우지 못한다. 그 결과 그런 자신의 감정을 미숙하고 뒤틀린 형태로 표현하거나 자기보다 더 약한 타인을 향한 폭력으로 표출하기도 한다. 어떤 경우에는 주변의 누구도 믿지 못하고 의심하는 피해의식을 갖고 있으면서 스스로를 사회 속에서 고립시킨다. 아마도 조승희씨는 그와 유사한 문제를 겪고 있었던 것이 아닌가 생각한다. 어떤 글이나 영화를 보고 그것을 창작한 사람의 심리를 분석하거나 평가하는 것은 위험한 일이다. 개인의 창작물은 그 사람의 무의식적ㆍ의식적 심리상태를 반영하는 것이긴 하나 그것이 작품으로 변용되는 과정에서 수많은 각색 과정을 거치므로 그것이 곧 그 사람의 상태를 직접 반영하는 것은 아니기 때문이다. 하지만 조승희씨가 수업시간에 과제로 제출했다는 두 편의 희곡은 그에 대한 작은 단서들을 제공한다. 필자는 그 가운데 하나인 &#39;리처드 맥비프&#39;의 일부를 읽어 보게 되었다. 희곡에는 리처드 맥비프라는 계부, 어머니 수(Sue), 그리고 존(John)이라는 세 사람이 등장한다. 그 희곡은 그들 셋 사이에서 벌어지는 폭력과 증오와 분노의 폭발이 내용의 전부라고 해도 과언이 아니다. 주인공들은 서로를 증오하고 성적으로 모욕하며, 죽이려고 하거나 죽이는 상상을 하거나 실제로 죽이지만 그 안에 스토리의 개연성은 별로 없다. 다시 말해 그가 쓴 글들은 이야기로 변용된 자기 표현이라기보다 날것 그대로의 증오와 분노를 나열해 놓은 것에 가깝다. 희곡의 내용보다 그가 과제로 그런 글을 제출했다는 사실, 즉 그것을 공식적 논평의 대상으로 교수와 급우들 앞에 드러냈다는 행위 자체가 더 인상적이다. 조금 다른 예로, 많은 청소년들이 팬터지 소설을 쓰면서 마음속에 억압된 분노와 환상을 표현하는데, 그 강도를 조절할 수만 있다면 그것은 어느 정도 건강한 일이다. 이런 경우 대개는 인터넷 공간에서 자신의 작품을 공유하고 평가 받는다. 이들이 자신의 작품을 대중 앞에 드러내는 것은 일종의 소통하고자 하는 의사표현이다. 소설의 내용으로 포장되어 있기는 하지만 결국 타인과 공유되는 것은 그 밑에 흐르는 정서인 것이다. 그가 희곡을 타인들 앞에 내놓았을 때, 그는 어쩌면 자신의 마음속에 있는 뒤틀린 분노가 얼마나 크고 강렬한지 누군가 알아차려 주기를 바랐는지도 모르겠다는 생각을 한다. 결과는 불행하게도 주위의 모든 사람이 그의 분노에 놀라고 겁에 질려 그를 조심스럽게 피하도록 만들었지만 말이다.(&#39;조씨의 희곡 내용이 너무 끔찍한 나머지 동료들이 매우 조심스럽게 논평해주었으며, 교수조차 조씨에게 최종 논평을 강요하지 않았다&#39;.ㆍ중앙일보, 2007년 4월 17일자) 그가 타인과 관계를 맺는 방식 역시 늘 비슷하지 않았을까? 물론 언론에서는 그가 여학생들을 스토킹한 행동 때문에 정신과에 입원한 적이 있다고 보도했지만 누군가 좀더 적극적으로 나서서 그를 지속적으로 치료 시스템과 접촉시켜 주었다면 지금과 같은 결과를 미리 막을 수 있지 않았을까 하는 안타까운 마음이 든다. "너 때문에" 사건 초기에 보도를 통해 알려진 사실 중 하나는, 그의 기숙사 방에서 "너 때문에 이 일을 저지른다"는 메모가 발견된 것이다. 또한 같은 노트에 "부잣집 아이들, 방탕함, 기만적인 허풍쟁이들"을 비난하는 내용도 있었다고 한다. 비디오에도 역시 "모든 것을 가진 사람"에게 자신의 행동의 책임이 있음을 명시하고 있다. 당시에 "너"를 단지 "헤어진 여자친구" 정도로 해석하는 것은 좀 성급하다는 생각이 들었는데 그 추측은 어느 정도 맞은 것 같다. 오히려 그는 자기 자신을 포함한 세상의 모든 사람을 적으로 생각하고 있었을지 모른다. 그의 부모가 어떤 사람인지, 어린시절에 어떤 아이였는지는 알려진 바 없지만 그가 길지 않은 생애를 살아오면서 과연 누군가를 진심으로 믿고 애정을 쏟은 적이 있었을까 궁금해지는 부분이다. 그가 결국 자살했다는 것도 중요하다. 스스로에 대한 최소한의 애착이 소멸될 때 사람은 자살에 이른다. 그가 저지른 대량학살은, 그것이 자살이든 더 이상의 학살을 막기 위한 경찰 측의 조치이든, 종국에는 자신이 파괴되는 것으로 결말지어질 것이 너무나도 자명한 행위이다. 다시 말해 그에게는 &#39;마지막 보루&#39;, 즉 어떤 상황에서도 자신을 저버리지 않을 누군가가 존재한다는 데 대한 믿음이 없었던 것 같다. 그런 믿음은 삶의 초기 수년간 안정된 양육에 의해 형성된다고 한다. 그는 삶의 어느 시점에선가, 아마도 아주 초기에 뭔가 손상을 겪었고, 이후에도 그것을 회복할 기회를 갖지 못했을 수 있다. 그래서 그의 머릿속 누군가(아마도 망상세계 속의 박해자)가 자신을 "구석에 몰았다"고, "단 하나의 선택권만을 주었다"고 하는 그의 말은 상당부분 곧이 들리는 구석이 있다. 초등학교 2학년 때 미국으로 건너간 이민 2세로서 그의 생활이 어땠는지는 알 수 없다. 그리고 궁금하다. 그가 겪은 어려움들이 과연 이민 2세로서 완전히 미국 사회에 동화되지 못한 불확실한 정체성의 문제와 관련이 있었을까? 그의 경우라면 아마 영향을 꽤 받지 않았을까 추측해본다. 실제로 비디오를 통해 들려 오는 그의 영어는, 영어를 모국어로 하는 미국 동부인들에 비하면 어딘가 어눌하다는 점도 인상적이다. 아마도 좀더 융통성 있고 사교적이며 자신의 능력을 잘 활용할 줄 아는 아이였다면 적응하는 데 큰 문제가 없었을지 모른다. 하지만 어떤 면에서든 다소 취약한 아이였다면 문제는 달라진다. 그의 경우를 보며, 요즘 광풍에 가까운 조기유학 붐에 대한 우려를 하지 않을 수 없다. 진료실을 찾아 오는 아이들 중 많은 경우가 중학교 또는 고등학교 때 미국이나 캐나다로 유학을 떠났다가 적응이 어려워서 우울증이나 적응장애를 겪고 있다. 그들의 고민은 다양하다. 언어와 또래 관계 문제로 겪는 어려움은 물론이고 부모와의 소통 단절 또한 큰 문제 가운데 하나이다. 적지 않은 경우에 아이의 적성이나 능력, 그리고 미래에 대한 걱정과 두려움 등을 고려하지 않은 채 부모의 일방적 결정으로 유학을 보내고, 그런 아이들은 혼자 고민거리들을 떠안은 채 위축되어 간다. 더 많은 경우에는 부모 자신의 가치관조차 제대로 서 있지 않은 상태에서 그저 남들이 하니까 서둘러 유학을 보낸다. 부모가 함께 유학을 떠나지 못한 경우, 아이들은 일탈행동을 할 수 있는 가장 취약한 대상이 된다. 부모 중 한 명이 함께 간 경우에도, 부모는 부모대로 외국 생활에 적응하느라 힘에 겹고, 아이의 심리적 어려움을 살펴줄 여력이 없다. 살핀다고 해도 속수무책인 경우가 많다. 경제적 여유가 없는 경우에는 더 말할 것도 없다. 다시 말해, 준비가 미처 되지 못했거나 부모와 자녀 간 건강한 의사소통이 이뤄지지 않은 상태에서 자녀를 낯선 문화에 무리하게 이식시키려는 노력은 모르는 사이에 아이를 병들게 할 수 있는 것이다. 인종과 문화가 상이한 사회에 통합된다는 것은 생각만큼 만만한 일이 아닌 것이다. 조금씩 들려오는 그에 관한 몇 가지 사실들을 읽으면서 생각해보면, 끔찍하고 소름이 돋는 와중에 그에 대한 연민이 일어난다. 그가 저지른 것은 과연 "정신병에 걸린 부적응자의 치정과 질투"가 부른 어이없는 사건일 뿐이었을까. 어쩌면 그보다 조금 더 포괄적이고 깊은 뿌리를 가진 사건은 아닐까. 파괴와 증오와 분노, 그 밑바닥에 숨죽인 상실과 소외와 외로움, 그리고 많은 부모들과 스승들과 친구들이 다시 생각해보아야 할 소통의 문제, 가치관의 문제들이 조승희라는 사람 안에 엉켜 있는 것을 본다. 어느 봄날 아침에, 인간 비극의 정점에서 벌어진 한 사건에, 진심으로 애도를 표한다. 유희정 분당서울대병원 신경정신과 교수 Hee Jeong Yoo , MD, Ph.D. Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry Seoul National University Language A language of the resource ko Title A name given to the resource 정신과 의사가 분석한 ‘버지니아 비극과 조승희’ seoul national university https://www.april16.vtlibraries.net/files/original/VT widescreen wallpaper_ebf0529788.png null Dublin Core The Dublin Core metadata element set is common to all Omeka records, including items, files, and collections. "흐트러진 마음(放心)을 다잡는 게 학문의 길"이라는 맹자의 말을 패러디한 것인데 맹자가 학문하는 이의 정신 자세를 강조했다면 연암은 그의 행동거지에 무게를 실었다. 명분과 공론보다는 잘 먹고 잘 사는 게 우선이라는 북학파의 영수가 어찌 아니 그러랴. 지난 한 주를 뜨겁게 달궜던 버지니아공대 참사 사건 보도를 읽으며 생뚱맞게 연암의 말이 떠올라 책장을 다시 펼쳤다. 여기에서 연암은 당대 조선 선비들의 고루한 태도를 호되게 나무란다. 좀 길지만 들어볼 필요가 있다. "우리 조선 선비들은 세계 한 귀퉁이 구석진 땅에서 편협한 기풍을 지니고 살고 있다. (...) 우물 안 개구리와 잔가지 위 뱁새가 저 사는 곳이 제일인 양 으스대며 사는 꼴이다. (...) 원인은 다른 데 있지 않다. 학문할 줄 모르는 잘못에 있다. (...) 저들은 이렇게 말한다. &#39;오늘날 중국을 통치하는 자는 오랑캐다. 그들에게 학문을 배운다는 것이 나는 부끄럽다.&#39; (...) 법이 훌륭하고 제도가 좋으면 오랑캐라도 찾아가서 스승으로 섬기며 배워야 하거늘, (...) 우리를 저들과 비교하면 한 치도 나은 점이 없건만 한 줌 상투를 틀고 천하에 자신을 뽐내며 (...) 저들의 언어를 &#39;되놈말&#39;이라 중상하고 중국 고유의 훌륭한 법과 좋은 제도까지 싸잡아 배척하고 있다. 그렇다면 장차 누구를 모범으로 삼아서 개선할 것인가." 비극을 수습하는 미국인들의 몸가짐, 마음가짐을 바라보며 연암을 떠올리는 건 그가 이 시대를 살았더라면 참지 않고 터뜨렸을 한마디 포효가 못내 아쉬워서인지도 모르겠다. 슬픔과 분노를 삭이고 상처를 보듬는 미국민의 태도는 정녕 성숙하고 지혜로웠다. 아직 충격에서 헤어나지 못했을 유가족들조차 놀라우리만큼 침착함을 유지해 주위 사람을 더 아리게 했다. 늑장 대처한 학교 당국과 경찰을 원망하는 멱살잡이나 욕지거리는 볼 수도, 들을 수도 없었다. 항공기가 몇 시간만 지연돼도 목청을 돋우며 농성을 벌이는 모습에 익숙한 우리로서는 어지간히 낯선 풍경이었다. 한국 국적의 범인에 제발 저려하는 한국을 위로한 건 오히려 미국이었다. 신문 사설들은 하나같이 "당신들 잘못이 아니며 잘못은 이민자를 제대로 돌보지 않은 미국에 있다"고 자숙했다. "한국의 사과를 신의 은총과 인간애에 대한 교훈으로 받아들인다"고 한 신문도 있었다. 희생자들과 함께 범인 조승희의 추모석까지 마련되고 그를 위한 추모 편지와 꽃까지 이어지는 모습은 우리네 &#39;끼리끼리&#39; 문화로서는 선뜻 이해하기 힘들 정도다. 한국 국적의 외국인이 우리나라에서 비슷한 일을 저질렀을 때 우리도 그들처럼 반응할 수 있을까. 세계 경찰을 자임하는 오만한 제국, 미국에는 그런 뽀얀 속살이 숨어 있었다. 어쩌면 그것이 강한 미국을 만드는 진정한 힘인 줄도 모른다. 그런데 왜 여태껏 그런 모습을 보고 배우지 못했을까. 오랑캐한테서도 따라야 할 이런 점은 놔두고 왜 코끼리 다리 만지며 친미니 반미니 다투고만 있었을까. 연암이 살던 때처럼 외국행이 힘든 것도 아니고 이웃처럼 드나드는 미국이며, 거기서 공부하는 한국 학생만 10만 명이라는데 말이다. 박제가는 &#39;북학의&#39;에서 말한다. "정치 초기라면 오바마 대신 별명이라도 쓰련만, 이젠 그랬다간 더 큰 의심을 사게 됐다." 실제 그는 이름 때문에 소동을 치른다. 올 1월 1일 CNN은 빈 라덴 사진 밑에 "오바마는 어디 있는가"라는 자막을 달아 방송했다. 이틀 뒤엔 야후가 사고를 쳤다. 그의 사진 밑에 &#39;오사마 빈 라덴&#39;이라고 썼다. 우연치고는 너무나 시기가 딱 들어맞아 음모론도 등장했다. 이뿐 아니다. 그의 풀네임은 &#39;버락 후세인 오바마&#39;여서 기독교 신자인 그를 무슬림으로 몰아붙이는 글이 인터넷을 도배한다. 많은 지식인조차 그를 무슬림이라 믿고 있다. 심지어 &#39;블랙 오사마 (Black Osama)&#39;라 하는 이들도 있다. 선진국 미국에서 어떻게 이런 코미디가 가능할까. 이는 9.11 테러에 질린 미국인들 사이에서 생긴 &#39;과잉 반응&#39;으로 봐야 한다. 충격에 따른 과잉 반응은 어쩌면 자연스럽다. 극도의 흥분 상태에서 요모조모 따질 틈이 어디 있겠는가. 조승희 사건에 대한 한국인의 대응도 과잉의 연속이었다. 범인이 한국인으로 밝혀지자 대통령부터 난리가 났다. 그러다 &#39;범인은 범인이고 한국인은 한국인&#39;으로 미국인들은 본다는 보도가 나가자 또 다른 &#39;오버 액션&#39;이 등장했다. 언론들은 &#39;성숙한 대응&#39; 운운하며 이를 대서특필했고, 한국인들은 감격에 겨워했다. 미군 교통사고에 여중생 2명이 숨졌다고 성조기를 태우는 사람들 눈에는 상상하기 어려운 관대함이었을 것이다. 한국 사회를 분석하는 고전적인 틀은 &#39;소용돌이 이론&#39;이다. 절대 권력을 향해 모든 파워가 집중되는 모델이다. 한국인들의 인식도 구심점을 향해 빨려가는 소용돌이 패턴 같다. 그래선지 단편적인 보도를 토대로 조승희 사건 이후 미국 안에는 아무 후유증도 없는 것처럼 믿는 듯하다. 그러나 세상이 어디 그런가. 몇몇 신문과 버지니아 주지사가 "한국 사람 책임이 아니다"라고 했다고 미국 전체에 선입견이 없다고 믿는다면 극히 단세포적 발상이다. 인종차별을 규탄하는 사설이 신문마다 실려도 혐오 범죄가 날뛰는 곳이 미국이다. 최근 메릴랜드주 한국계 학생의 정학 소식이 보도됐다. 조승희 사건을 계기로 놀림받자 "나도 총으로 쏠 수 있다"고 했다가 정학을 당했다. 우리 눈엔 어처구니없는 일이다. 그러나 더 심각한 문제는 쉬쉬해서 안 알려졌을 뿐 비슷한 사건이 여러 건 일어났고, 또 일어날 수 있다는 사실이다. 뉴욕의 한 청소년단체 대표는 "최근 알려진 비슷한 사건만 4~5건"이라고 털어놨다. 다른 사건의 유형도 비슷하다. 폭탄 그림을 그렸다가 "내가 조승희였다면 더 크게 했겠다"라고 말했다가 정학당한 경우도 있었다. 어떤 학생은 범인들의 입장에서 9.11 테러에 대한 작문을 했다가 학교에서 쫓겨났다. 뉴욕에서만 이럴진대 미 전역에서 얼마나 많은 사건이 벌어졌는지 모른다. 주미 대사관 측은 "조승희 사건이 미국 사회의 병폐로 여겨지는 판에 이런 일을 이슈화하는 건 좋지 않아 조용히 대응키로 했다"고 한다. 일리 있는 얘기다. 그러나 상황을 알면서 자제하는 것과 새까맣게 몰라서 그냥 지나친다는 건 완전히 다른 얘기다. 미국 내 한국 유학생 수는 8만7000여 명. 세계 1위다. 이들을 미국 땅에 보낸 수많은 부모가 착각에서 깨어나야 한다. 그래야 바다 건너 자녀들에게 말조심, 행동조심 하라고 당부라도 할 수 있지 않겠는가. 남정호 뉴욕 특파원 namjh@joongang.co.kr -- Original Source: Joins.com/JoongAng Daily <a href="http://article.joins.com/article/article.asp?total_id=2735995">http://article.joins.com/article/article.asp?total_id=2735995</a> Language A language of the resource ko Title A name given to the resource 슬슬 터지는 `조승희 후유증` joins.com joongang daily Document A resource containing textual data. "(이민자) 말들의 도시. 거리의 외침은 우리가 거의 알지 못하는 언어로 이루어진다." 이 이방인의 세계와 주류사회의 공존은 사유 능력과 교양의 공간에서 가능하다. 그러나 소년 조승희는 말의 감옥에 갇혔을 것이다. 텍스트를 소리내 읽지 못해 여러 번 좌절했을 것이고, "고 홈(네 나라로 가라)"이라는 친구들의 비아냥에 적개심이 타올랐을 것이다. 영문과 진학은 그에게 &#39;말에 대한 복수&#39;였다. NBC에 보내진 그의 글에서 증오심으로 버무려진 난해한 단어들이 많이 발견되는 것은 우연이 아니다. 언어의 울타리를 삶의 애정으로 녹일 지혜보다 응징 욕망이 먼저 그의 마음을 점령한 탓이다. 혹여, 말의 감옥을 부수고 나오면 또 다른 울타리가 기다린다. 인종의 울타리는 말의 장벽보다 훨씬 단단해 학력과 교양으로도 뚫기 어려운 구조적 장애물이다. 헨리 박의 처는 백인 여자인데, 그의 메모장에는 남편을 묘사하는 십여 개의 목록이 장난스럽게 적혀 있다. 그중 &#39;황화(yellow peril)&#39;와 &#39;이방인(stranger)&#39;은 인종적 단절의 축조물이다. 미국의 한인촌에 모여 사는 1세대 이민자치고 자녀가 부모 근처에 둥지를 틀기를 바라는 사람은 별로 없을 터이다. 그러나 그게 어렵다. 많은 자녀가 인종의 경계선을 넘지 못한다. 조승희가 &#39;너(you)&#39;라고 지칭한 일반적 대상이 인종인지 부유층인지는 분간할 길이 없다. 아마 통제되지 않는 정신분열의 신경 줄기를 타고 혼류되었을 것이다. 인종의 경계선을 넘는 길이 종교다. 건국의 명분이 그랬듯 미국적 정신과 윤리도 종교적이기에 개신교를 통해 동화의 길을 단축할 수 있다. 그런데 이민자들이 접속하는 곳은 미국 교회가 아니라 대체로 한인 교회다. 한인 교회는 이민자의 정착을 돕는 진입항이자 적응과 동화 과정을 지원하는 문화교습소와 같다. 그런데 종교의 영역을 담론.실천.공동체.제도로 나누면, 개신교 담론이라는 &#39;관념 영역&#39;을 제외하고 나머지 &#39;현실 영역&#39;들은 여전히 주류사회와 공유면적이 작다. 교회가 그를 순치하지 못한 이유다. 자아도취적 과시 증세를 보였던 조승희는 그 모든 단계를 단숨에 넘는 길을 망상 속에서 찾았을 것이다. 자신을 모세나 예수로 동일시하는 것, 그리고 심판자로 나서는 것. 그리하여 누아르 폭력 영화 같은 끔찍한 참사가 초래되었다. 미국 이민사에서 한국인은 모범적 사례로 평가받는다. 남달리 근면 성실하고, 미국적 가치를 존중할 줄 아는 민족으로 정평이 났음은 두말할 나위가 없다. 조승희가 저지른 참극은 대부분 그의 정신결함 탓이지만, 타인종의 진정한 &#39;미국인 되기&#39;를 방해하는, 미국 사회 깊숙이 내재된 유리벽(glass wall)들이 얼마나 얇아졌는지 미국민 스스로도 성찰할 계기인 듯싶다. 미국이야말로 인종연합으로 힘을 기른 사회 아닌가. 송호근 서울대 교수·사회학 Hoken Song, Professor Department of Sociology Seoul National University -- Original Source: Joins.com/JoongAng Daily <a href="http://article.joins.com/article/article.asp?total_id=2704145 ">http://article.joins.com/article/article.asp?total_id=2704145</a> Language A language of the resource ko Title A name given to the resource `이스마일 액스` 코드 풀기 joongang daily joins.com Document A resource containing textual data. "무비자 협상에 영향을 주지나 않을까? 한.미 FTA의 의회 비준이 삐거덕거리지나 않을까?" LA폭동 사태까지 떠올렸다. 여기까지 아빠는 모범 아버지임에 틀림없었다. 하지만 이내 그것이 얼마나 부끄러운 소치인지를 알게 됐다. 사건이 터진 직후 노무현 대통령도 사과를 했다. 그것도 세 차례나. 사건을 저지른 범죄자의 출생국가 대통령이라는 점에서 어쩌면 당연한 일일지도 모른다. 하지만 국가의 문제가 아니라 한 개인의 문제라는 점을 우리 모두 간과한 것은 아닌지 돌아보게 됐다. 그가 한국인이기 이전에 망상과 정신분열과 복합 성격장애를 가진 사회 부적응자라는 점을 놓친 것이다. 실제로 미국인 누구도 국적을 놓고 논란을 벌이는 것 같지는 않다. 미국 언론 어디에도 범인의 출생지를 따지거나 여자친구 관계를 파헤치는 기사는 보도되지 않았다. 그렇다고 이미 한국을 떠난 사람이어서 상관이 없다거나 미국의 총기 소지법 등에 문제가 있다는 식의 탓을 찾아내려는 것도 아니다. 안타깝고 슬픈 일이지만 이 일에 대해 한국인이기 때문에 수치심을 느끼거나 부끄러워해야 할 일은 아니라는 점이다. 오히려 우리가 부끄럽게 여겨야 할 일이 있다면 우리의 국적을 가진 자녀들이 새로운 사회 시스템에 적응하도록 정체성을 심어 주고 소속감을 심어 주지 못한 일에 있다. 낯선 문화에 방황하도록 방치하고 무관심했음을 반성하게 된다. 나아가 생업에 쫓기느라 자식들과 소통에 장애를 겪고 언어의 장벽을 극복하지 못한 부모 역할과 가정환경을 탓해야 한다. 이제야말로 지금도 계속되고 있는 아메리칸 드림과 기러기 가족들의 행렬을 차분히 돌아보아야 할 때가 아닌가 여겼다. 솔직히 아빠도 너희들을 성공시키는 데 관심이 많았다. 하지만 어느 날 깨달았다. &#39;자녀를 성공시키려고 하면 할수록 자녀들은 불행해지기 쉽다. 하지만 자녀를 행복하게 해 주면 성공한다&#39;는 진리를 말이다. 찬아, 준아. 이번 기회에 미국이란 나라는 국가적 재난을 어떤 방법으로 대처하고 해결해 가는지를 주목해 보렴. 교실에서의 학문적 지식만이 아니라 미국 사회가 갖고 있는 휴머니즘과 이성적 판단 등을 배워야 할 때다. 그리고 한 인간이 겪게 될 정신세계, 즉 영성의 문제도 소홀히 할 수 없음을 알아야 한다. 인간은 지성과 감성만으로는 존재하지 않는다. 그를 지배하고 있던 잘못된 구원자 콤플렉스 등 사회를 향한 뒤틀린 분노가 제어되지 못했을 때의 사회적 비용을 조용히 헤아려 보는 게 중요하다. 찬아, 네가 친구들과의 약속을 접고 아수라장이 되었던 쓰나미 현장으로 달려갔던 일을 기억한다. 갔다 와서 네가 그랬지.
