"I think it's important for all the students at U of O to show their support," said Madeline Wigen, a University student and the ASUO finance coordinator, who attended the memorial. Similar memorials were held on campuses across the country Thursday and today, something Wigen said made her feel connected to students across the nation and at Virginia Tech. "Probably many students don't know somebody on that campus. This is a way to reach to the greater university community," she said. The memorial, sponsored by the ASUO, the Veterans and Family Student Association, the Office of the President and the Office of Student life, was short and speakers from the ASUO and VFSA emphasized the importance of coming together as a community. "We need unity now more than ever," said ASUO President Jared Axelrod, who spoke at the memorial. "I didn't know any one of the victims, but in the sense we are all in the university community and in a community as a whole, it's important to come together." Thirty-three candles were lit, one for each death, and will remain burning until today at noon, when a moment of silence will be observed and then broken by the ringing of the campus carillon bells. Orange and maroon ribbons were passed around and attendees were asked to sign a large banner, which will be sent to Virginia Tech after it's filled with notes of sorrow and encouragement. "I said 'I send my love and prayers,'" said University freshman Krista von Stein of what she wrote on the banner. "I can't fathom what they're going through, but I definitely feel connected to them." While this is a difficult time for all members of the University community, Amanda Lopez, a University student who attended the event, said it's not a time to turn away. "I think this is a really important time to reflect on these great students and their memory and to look past the difficulty of the situation and remember the victims," said Lopez, the ASUO programs administrator. Sean Jin, a University sophomore and member of the VFSA who spoke at the memorial, said he still hasn't gotten over the shootings of Monday morning and that he doesn't think other students have either. "After the event happened there was sort of a somberness on campus. Everybody was affected by this event," he said. Jin said he believes emphasizing the importance of community today will prevent tragedies similar to this one from happening in the future. "The most important thing we have to focus on is prevention of these things," Jin said. After the gunman of the worst massacre in U.S. modern history was identified as 23-year-old Korean-born student Cho Seung-hui, who took his own life during the rampage, there has been an apparent fear among Korean students that the anger toward the killer might bend toward those who share the same ethnic background as him. Most U.S. media outlets seem to be downplaying the issue of race in their coverage of the incident, focusing more on the issue of gun control. However, there have been sporadic reports of verbal abuse and threats against Korean and other Asian Americans, according to Korean communities in Virginia and other parts of the U.S. Cheon Do-sang, a 30-year-old office worker in Seoul, has been studying between working hours in the hope of taking a master of business administration (MBA) course at an American university. Now, he is having second thoughts. ``I am thinking about choosing a school in London instead, where I might have an easier time finding a shorter course with cheaper tuition fees,'' said Cheon, who worries that enmity toward Korean students might develop in U.S. schools. ``I have already applied for a number of schools now, including a U.S. school which had originally been at the top of my list. However, should I be accepted to attend that school in September, it will still be a tough decision for me,'' he said, adding that he might look for other options next year. Justified or not, Cheon's concerns seem to be shared by a lot of Koreans preparing to study overseas. An official at a consulting agency in Taechi-dong, southern Seoul, which specializes on helping Korean students find foreign schools, said he has been getting numerous calls from students and parents over the safety of studying in the U.S. The company had recruited 28 middle school students who applied for an exchange student program at a U.S. school, which was to start in July. After the Virginia Tech shootings, however, four students called off their plans to participate, despite already paying 2 million won each as deposit money. ``The problem is bigger for older students or university graduates, who have spent a longer time preparing to study abroad but are now swept by a sense of uncertainty,'' said the company official. Korean students are hardly the only ones fearing a backlash. The Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) said it pulled its ``Sparkling Korea'' television advertisements on CNN after the shootings. ``It would be inappropriate to air the 30-second ads featuring images of Korea's culture and natural beauty between the news reports of a gun shooting rampage by a Korean-born student,'' said Park Young-kyu, an official at the KTO's branch in New York. In a more bizarre case, the Kangwon Ilbo, a vernacular daily based in Kangwon Province, printed a series of interviews with government officials to soothe local worries that the Virginia Tech shootings might have a negative effect on local efforts to host the 2014 Winter Olympics at the region's ski resort in PyeongChang. Critics wonder whether the government is actually worsening the situation through its series of statements and diplomatic gestures after the tragedy, thus making it harder for Korean Americans by drumming up the ethnic issue. Lee Tae-shik, the Korean ambassador to the U.S., in particular has been under fire from the Korean media after suggesting Korean American Christians fast for 32-days to mourn the 32 people killed in Cho's shooting spree while speaking at a Washington church. ``Why does a Korean diplomat bring up the issue of race in a tragic incident that left more than 30 people killed? That is a totally new level of stupidity,'' said Lee Dong-hun, a 30-year-old Korean law student in Boston. ``The Korean government should pay its condolences to the victims at Virginia Tech as other countries did, not an apology. His grandfather feared that at the age of eight he might be mute; the boy's great aunt worried that he had mental problems. And his mother, Kim Hyang-im, spent much of her time in church praying for him to snap out of his unhealthy taciturnity. "She was heartbroken," said his mother's aunt, Kim Yang-soon. "After they moved to America, she hoped his silences would ease as he grew older. But in fact they got worse." The poor family had a difficult start. Cho's mother was forced into an arranged marriage with a man 10 years her senior - Cho Sung-tae, who came from a poor family in the south but had worked in Saudi Arabia for 10 years on construction sites and oilfields. Hyang-im was from a well-educated family of North Korean landowners who had fled during the Korean war. "She didn't want to marry, but she gave in," said Yang-soon. No one in the family recalls any violent behaviour from Cho that might have hinted at later carnage. But they were unnerved by his sullenness. "My grandson was shy even as a little boy and he would never run to me like my other grandchildren," his maternal grandfather, Kim Hyong-shik, told the Hankyoreh Daily. "I thought he might be deaf and dumb." Schoolmates told local media they remembered Cho as quiet. But the father doted on his children. "He would have done anything for them," the grandfather said. "But now this has happened. It's as if everything they've done, the reason for their whole existence has been for nothing." The family moved to the US in 1992. During their eight-year wait for a visa, they fell short of money, selling their second-hand shop and home to make ends meet. They had visited Hyang-im's family before they left, an occasion that was only the second time the grandparents had seen Cho. Yang-soon said of the boy: "He would not talk even when I called to him. He was so quiet I remarked he must have a very gentle nature. But his mother told me he was too quiet. Soon after they got to America, he was diagnosed as being clinically withdrawn. It amazes me he ever [got] into university. I guess he must have had some mental problems from birth." Cho's family worked hard in the US. His father worked in a laundry, to fund his children's education. His mother, a part-time waitress, attended the Korean church in Centreville, where she implored the pastor to help her son. When Cho started at Virginia Tech, his mother took his dormitory mates to one side to explain his character and asked them to help. "She was worried that he spent all his time in his room, lost in a world of video games," the paper quoted the pastor as saying. "[Cho] came to bible studies for a couple of years, but rarely spoke and never got along with the other youths." "I just wish he would have talked," said Yang-soon. "There is an old saying in Korea that people who won't talk will end up killing themselves. That is what happens when the resentment builds up." The convocation ceremonyincluded remarks from U.S. President George W. Bush and Gov. Tim Kaine. It was a "massive display of respect," the Virginia Tech junior said, observing the crowd. Nearly all entering the somber event wore Hokie maroon and orange as they donned memorial ribbons. During the ceremony, various public officials including Bush and Virginia Tech President Charles Steger offered words of solace to the community. "No words truly express the depth of sadness we feel," Steger said after he received a prolonged standing ovation. "Words are very weak symbols of our emotions at times like this." President and Laura Bush were in attendance at the event, and Bush addressed the university on behalf of the nation. "We've come to express our sympathy," he said. "In this time of anguish, I hope you know that people all over this country are thinking of you and asking God to provide comfort for all who have been affected." Throughout the southwestern Virginia campus, students, university employees and faculty members tried to comprehend the senseless tragedy. Choices Monday morning Senior Kate Stuck of Granby, Conn. was sitting in class in Pamplin Hall Monday morning when she heard about the situation. One of her classmates, who had a laptop, received the first e-mail sent out at 9:26 a.m. "We knew something was going on," Stuck said. Her fears were confirmed when her boyfriend, under lockdown in Randall Hall, called her cell phone. Unlike Stuck, Chris Cooke learned about the shooting first-hand through the first e-mail sent out about the attacks by the administration, and he decided not to go to class. He e-mailed his professor and asked to make up the lab. He said at that point he felt his personal safety was more important then the inconvenience of an 8 a.m. Friday make-up lab. "It kind of makes you wonder if you are safe anywhere," said Anthony Linkous, a 25-year veteran maintenance worker for Virginia Tech. He said his wife called him frantically every half-hour, begging him to come home. Addressing the situation Two weeks ago, Amie Steele took over as editor-in-chief of The Collegiate Times, Tech's student newspaper. On Monday, she found herself in the middle of an international media hailstorm as her phone rang off the hook. "Breaking news isn't my forte yet," she said, explaining that she rose through the ranks on the production staff, specializing in layout and design. During the 24 hours following the shooting, Steele managed to sleep for an hour and a half. For her, the most overwhelming part of the experience has been the international media presence. "We are trying to get our own stories, conduct our own interviews, and they keep on calling," she said. "It's difficult to juggle." Overall, however, she said she feels the media has approached the issue with sensitivity and has been respectful of the personal nature of the evolving situation. The intense media attention on the shooting has forced university administrators and police officials into the unexpected position of answering not just to their local community, but to throngs of media outlets and their readership. To resolve these concerns Gov. Time Kaine, at the request of Steger and Tech's Board of Visitors, has commissioned an independent panel to review the way the incident was handled. "It's the most horrific thing that has ever happened," said Laurel Stell, a senior from Charlottesville. "At first everyone was angry at Steger for not locking down the campus, [but] they never meant for anyone to get hurt." Stell noted that because the gunman lived in a dorm and thus had a dorm key, he could have easily gotten into any residential area. While students like Stell do not assign blame to the administration, other students and media outlets have done so. Some groups and individuals focused on other issues, such as gun control, have also jumped on the issue. Gov. Tim Kaine expressed his disdain for this behavior. "People who want to take this event 24 hours afterwards and make this their political hobbyhorse, I've got nothing but loathing for them," Kaine said in a press conference. What next? After addressing the significant dislocation and emotional trauma caused by the incident, the Virginia Tech community must prepare to resume core educational operations. Yesterday administrators announced that classes would be canceled until at least Monday. Norris Hall, home of the civil engineering department, will be closed for the rest of the semester. Christina McIntyer, a professor in the human nutrition food and exercise department, remains optimistic that the university community will emerge intact. "We're a strong community," she said. "If anything, this will bring us closer. It'll be a day we remember." Cooke, a civil engineering major, said in the long-term he was concerned not only about the future location of his department but about the outcome of his coursework and grades. He said he had several exams in the next few weeks and he was not sure if they would be pushed back or canceled. But, even in the face of uncertainty relating to his academic career, Cooke said he did not want to be "standing idly by." He and fellow members of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity got together to donate blood yesterday to help stave off Blacksburg's severe blood shortage. The charitable activities in which many students are engaging provide much needed hope. But for graduating seniors, Monday's events place a permanent stain on the bright celebrations of future opportunities many had been looking forward to. "Graduation is now more of a memorial than a celebration," said Andrew Stone, a senior from Charlotte, N.C. Monday's events have not only left a mark on the students leaving Tech, but also on the many potential new members of the university community. "It is going to make people think twice about coming to Tech," Linkous said. "People want to know they're safe." One of the core challenges everyone sees in the response to the tragedy is moving forward in a manner deferential to the victims of Monday's massacre. "We've got to get back into it sometime," Linkous said. But now, as I approach this column after a week of tragedy - both at Miami University and nationwide - I can hardly form a rational thought. Somehow a 500-word column needs to be written on a topic that I cannot find one suitable word for. I don't need to recall the events of Saturday night at Miami, or Monday afternoon at Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Nothing that I say can express the individual grief, confusion and frustration that we feel. Like you, I've been watching the news and discussing it in class. Sometimes the facts are accurate. Sometimes they're just pieces of rumor that patch together some semblance of truth. I guess when you're desperate for answers, almost anything helps. But as I'm flipping through the channels of repeated footage, I'm shocked to hear how quickly the actual disaster has been swept aside. The news is flooded with debate about Virginia gun sales and the failure of campus crisis communication. Somehow CNN and ABC find it appropriate to spark these debates right now. Gun control. University communication policy. The horror of this tragedy cannot be simplified into a policy debate. Not yet, anyways. This is about people. People were murdered, first and foremost. The aftermath should be filled with reverence and condolences for the victims. The focus should be for the families left behind, the campus that will be shaken forever and the lives that were taken. We have to let ourselves grieve. We have to take time to hurt, to sympathize, to feel, to pray. This isn't a time to blame. Yes, there will be a time to discuss methods of prevention. That time is not now. It is simply disrespectful to ignite any heated policy debate that supersedes the mourning for the lost lives. Of course, it's natural to seek blame and explanation when such an event happens. So, yes, we can point fingers. We can assume things about the school, the policies, the killer, the situation at-large. It's a natural reaction to assign blame at a time like this. But assigning blame won't bring those students and faculty back. Like I said, I'm at a loss for eloquent words that can articulate the disaster. Words alone will not solve the confusion, they won't mend the grief. I'm at a loss for words, but I'm not at a loss for feeling. And perhaps that's all we can do for now. We can feel. We have to let ourselves grieve. This isn't a time to blame the state of Virginia for gun control policies. This isn't a time to question the administrative communication of the university. We will have months, maybe years, ahead for that. This tragedy isn't about policy. It's about lives. It's one of those social networking sites that parents, lawmakers and educators discuss when they're concerned about cyber bullying or child predators. But after the Virginia Tech tragedy on April 16, the site truly brought the world closer together in the most remarkable scene of solidarity and compassion I have ever seen online. Within a day of the shootings, the most common symbol on Facebook was a combination black hope ribbon and maroon "VT" logo. Most Facebook users have default profile photos of themselves posing with friends, at parties, on vacation or with their significant others; almost overnight, most were replaced with the Hokie hope ribbon. It was heartwarming to see students from across the world join together in mourning - e-mourning, you could say. Many Facebook users posted on their profiles or in common-interest group bulletin boards the Hokie hope ribbon accompanied with their school's mascot or coat of arms with the phrase "Today we are all Hokies." And we all certainly were. Facebook usually is used to keep in touch with friends, post and share photos, organize and publicize events and find other people with common interests, and all of those features were used in the days after the tragedy to report breaking news and new information, organize vigils and charities, post photo illustrations and sketches commemorating the shootings and even share poems Facebook users composed. Only a handful of users have discussed politics; it seems most e-mourners are first and foremost focused on their grief and sympathy, and how they can help. In the first frantic and confusing hours and days after the tragedy, one group was dedicated to posting updated information on the event and its aftermath, and others sprang up declaring "Nationwide Orange and Maroon Day," "April 16, 2007 - A Moment of Silence" and "Prayer Group for Va. Tech," for example. When the media reported that the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan. - a cult of hatemongers who have picketed military funerals with inflammatory banners - would show up at Tech victims' funerals, a protest Facebook group emerged to organize and voice opposition. The congregation eventually did rescind their plan to protest the Tech funerals, but not before the Facebook group's membership swelled to more than 59,000. Perhaps the most touching Facebook group I've discovered was "All Schools Unite for Virginia Tech," created by a University of Tennessee student. The goal is to tally one volunteer representative from 1,000 different schools and then engrave those names on a plaque that will be presented to Tech; I'm representing my alma mater, the University of Delaware. Students from schools I've never heard of, even schools in Canada and high schools from across America, have joined and shown their support. More than 725 colleges and high schools are represented on the list thus far. Facebook groups also have been dedicated to the victims as a place for users to share funeral and vigil information and messages about - and to - their lost friends. I didn't know any of the victims, but I did join a group dedicated to Mary Read, since she attended my high school in Annandale, Va. Mary was remembered most by friends for her friendly, heartwarming smile, and many of her friends have replaced their Facebook profile photos with photos of Mary. "Look Mary, there are so many people that love you," one person wrote on the message board, referring to Mary's profile on The New York Times Web site. "I love you and can't wait to see you again in Heaven." As Blacksburg tries to return to a sense of normalcy, so is Facebook. Many users have reverted to their former profile photos, and Tech commemoration groups are being updated less and less. But like the gravestones at Arlington or memorials in the nation's capitol, the posted messages of compassion and heartache on Facebook will always be there; the photos of America's college students at vigils and donning orange and maroon in a show of solemn solidarity and hope will always be there; the photos of empathetic banners signed by countless students in a time of mourning will always be there; and the photos of memorials, flowers and notes on Tech's Drillfield will always be there. The poem tells the story of mourning ("We are strong enough to stand tall tearlessly, we are brave enough to bend and cry, and sad enough to know we must laugh again"), senselessness ("We do not understand this tragedy. We know we did nothing to deserve it") and resiliency ("We are better than we think and not quite what we want to be, we are alive to the imagination and the possibility, we will continue to invent the future"). Giovanni finished, her hands in the air, with the words, "We will prevail, We will prevail, We will prevail, We are Virginia Tech," which was followed by a standing ovation and collective "Let's Go Hokies" chant. "We felt alive, we felt invincible," wrote the editorial board of VT's student newspaper, Collegiate Times. Giovanni's poem is one of many invigorating tools that will help the process of mourning the 33 people who died Monday. The stupid act of violence that occurred in Blacksburg, VA, proves that by no means can a single person break a community. One can kill another and one can wound a society; but wounds heal, albeit with scars, and companionship, understanding and a common sense always prevails. Though it's difficult to do, this tragedy must be separated from other like societal disasters. The connection of the Virginia Tech tragedy and recent high school shootings was made quickly. After the initial focus on the specific event, media members and politicians from around the world were quick to deem this another American crisis that goes hand-in-hand with Thurston, Columbine and others. This is a typical answer from a national media system that has spent the last few days, and will spend many days to come, unraveling every possible detail and encouraging all types of debate pertaining to the killings, and comparing them to prior events. From the inner psyche of the killer to the indictments against America's gun culture, the media cannot help but pervade society with contemplative specifications, because that is its job. Similarly, it is the government's job to do a systematic review of the situation and seek improvements. But these are all thoughts and while thoughts produce and evaluate a crisis, the real crisis is the deep feelings and raw emotions of those affected. This current murder spree is separate, however, because it puts a mark on a new set of feelings and emotions - the ones connected to higher education. This attack did not happen in a setting of confined growth were stereotypes heavily influence social scenes and where goals are, for the most part, laid out for you. This attack happened in a setting where converging paths and ideas coexist and roam freely. This happened in an arena of community development. This senseless attack happened in a setting where the ultimate goal is finding a common sense. As University student Stephanie Strahan said during Tuesday night's vigil in the EMU Amphitheater "When you go to college and it happens in another college, you feel like you're in the same community." As we take a step back this week to contemplate, it's important to remember why we are on this campus in Eugene. Sure, everyone needs personal development and self fulfillment, but at the end of the day, we all possess an inner desire to strengthen our community. Express ideas openly and open up to ideas of others; discuss, debate and decide with a communal rationale. Miami President David Hodge sent an e-mail to Miami students, staff and faculty Tuesday stating that Miami's police force is highly trained and able to deal with a live shooter situation. Hodge's e-mail also outlined specific guidelines for students in a lockdown situation. According to Miami University Police Department (MUPD) Chief John McCandless, changes have not been made to the current lockdown policy; however, he and his fellow officers have been preparing for such a situation on Miami's campus for quite some time. "We've been training for an active shooter for a couple of years," McCandless said. "We can tweak the police based on what worked and what didn't (for Virginia Tech police). There is a lot of misinformation streaming to the media for the first 24 to 48 hours in a situation like that. We will learn from the more solid information that the media reports in the following four or five days." Though MUPD only has 29 full-time police officers, McCandless said he is not concerned about quantitative manpower in an emergency. He said the Oxford Police Department (OPD) has 25 full-time officers and the Oxford Township Police has 10 full and part-time officers. McCandless said these departments would fully support Miami police if necessary. "We have a wonderful professional relationship with the local police agencies," McCandless said. "(This will) add up to be a substantial police contingency in the case of an emergency." According to both McCandless and OPD's Chief Steve Schwein, the first force to respond to the most critical police situation; similar to the one in Blacksburg, Va.; would be Oxford's Special Response Team (SRT) Team, comprised of seven OPD officers, one Oxford Township officers and five MUPD officers. In addition, both chiefs said further action would be determined during the events. The squad holds monthly training sessions to prepare for hypothetical situations that need a police presence. McCandless said the SRT Team held a mock live shooter exercise in the summer of 2006 in Reid Hall on Miami's campus. The squad also traveled to New Mexico for further training funded by the Department of Homeland Security in December 2006, according to McCandless. "Any time you can plan a tactical situation in advance, the results are almost always positive," Schwein said. "The key is being properly prepared by planning and rehearsing the situation." Miami University Police Department Lt. Andrew Powers said he has referred students to the police Web site, which outlines procedure in the event of an emergency. It states that if the shooter is outside or in the same building, students should find a safe, lockable room and barricade themselves inside and situate themselves on the ground, away from the door. Subjects hiding from the active shooter should not respond or move from their safe space until verifiable police arrive. Whether or not the shooter is in the room, the policy urges one person in the situation to call 911, so police may be dispatched to the area and properly deal with the situation. McCandless also reiterated the point of calling 911. He said that though the phone may ring several times if there are a lot of calls to the station at once, the dispatch phone lines can handle it and extra officers will be standing by, if necessary, to answer emergency calls. The Office of News and Public Information at Miami has set up a hotline to inform students of a campus-wide emergency. It was originally put in place this spring to centralize school information in regards to weather, according to Carole Johnson, the office's internal communications spokeswoman. According to the Office of News and Public Information, that number is (513) 529-9000. After the snowstorms and necessary cancellations that followed, Johnson said the school thought it necessary to have an outlet for information besides e-mail and Miami's Web site. Besides the hotline, she said Miami's administration is constantly looking for possible improvements so the school can better handle an emergency situation. "We constantly look at our crisis plan, almost on a daily basis," Johnson said. "Looking at it, updating it, and continuous training are critical in continuing a solid crisis plan, year round." Johnson also said because technology is always changing, new ways to contact students in the event of an emergency could potentially develop. Miami University's branch campuses at Hamilton and Middletown do not have their own police force like the Oxford campus, but are instead protected by the city departments of Hamilton and Middletown. According to Officer John Crawford of the Hamilton Police Department, policy has not changed since Monday for the department, nor does he think that it appears they will. "Most police agencies across the country changed policy (regarding schools and active shooter situations) after the Columbine shooting in 1999," Crawford said. It feels better tell the story, it's seems more real, more raw, but that also means that it's something that I can accept as tangible and can move on from. My friend and I always eat breakfast together on Monday, Wednsday, and Friday mornings before our 8 o'clock Foundation Design Lab. Mon. April 16th, I got up at 6:15am, as usual, took my shower and got my stuff together for class. We met outside of D2 at 7:15am. The first shooting was called in at about 7:15am. Mandy lives in West AJ on the 7th floor. She took the elevator down and walked over, never knowing what was really behind the elevator doors as she passed the 4th floor. As we gazed through the glass windows facing AJ and Washington Street, eating our breakfast, we noted and first ambulance, followed later by another. Mandy explained by saying how very many accidental injuries happen at the gyms all the time, neither of us knowing the destination or the calling. We arrived at Cowgill Hall, fourth floor studios at around 8am or 8:15am. My study is right next to the windows overlooking the commuter parking lots;, Mandy's has a perfect view of the backside of Burrass, as well as the GBJ Student Center to the right and Hancock and Norris on the left of the plaza. The first e-mails were sent at about 9:15am and after checking my e-mail I called my mother, not just to reassure her but also to reassure my grandparents once the found out and began barraging my mother with phone calls. As I was talking we noticed a police officer sprinting to the other side of Cowgill, many of us followed to the other side of the fourth floor to see what the fuse was about. rounding the corner of the short, wide hallway, we were shocked to find half of the studios and the custodians already studing the movements of the officers intently from the fourth floor windows. I joined their ranks, along with Mandy. We watched as the SWATT team ran to the door on our side of Norris; I called my boyfriend, having just been let out of an engineering class in Hancock, directly behind Norris and beside Cowgill. At first I saw a few people, normal people running around on the plaza, and I was unsure of whether or not he could run to Cowgill to join us, then the we heard the shots. Stay where you are, someone will find you. Only of few of the shots rang loud and clear, and we watched with hushed anticipation as the man with the camera phone took video of the officers and recorded the ominous noises. Get out of there! The SWATT team went into Norris. The man finally left and no more civilians were in sight, besides a funny little asain man with his lunch box, thinking that it was like any other ordinary day. An officer behind a tree quickly shooed him away. And then people began running out of the building. It was clear they were in shock and terror, their movements quick and with an almost robotic jerk to each motion, each backward glance, each forward, away, rush. We saw two groups retreat from the building before we were sent back from the windows until the professors were given some idea of what to do with us. We were not well informed being on the fourth floor. But momentarily, not five minutes after we were sent away, we were told to immediately retreat to the 1st floor, room 100, a room with only two entrances and exits, and no wiindows; it is entirely self contained within the core of the building. We all began hurridly calling our friends and loved ones, knowing this was more serious than we had orginially assumed. After a half an hour, my boyfriend had been moved to a conference room in Randolph, connected to Hancock, where they watched the news, waiting for any tiny scrap of information, and we in Cowgill were all sent to the undergroung depths of Burchard Hall, beneath the plaza, where we were kept in side rooms away from the glass pyramids above, but protected by the automatically locking doors on the stairwells. It must be understood that Cowgill is undergoing renovations in the coming year or years to revamp some security issues, such as the fact that our front door refuses to automatically lock with the rest of campus. Therefore, we were safer in Burchard than in Cowgill. From then on we played the waiting game, with two liasons with the outside world, showing up two or three times over the next hours to give us the grim news of the rising death count. Finally we were released close to noon, much of time had slipped away from us in our safehold, trying to either flood our senses with news, or shut it out. We were told that we could only leave if we went away from campus, then we were told students were allowed back, but Mandy, Rachel, and I were sure that that didn't include them. Rachel is from my studio and also lives in AJ. We met up with Bryan, my boyfriend, and crossed to Burrass, where his aunt was able to gather us together and take us to Bryan's appartment off campus, behind the Kroger. She was parked on the Drillfield. I still can't stand that silence, it resonates through my memory as the sound of death, the final sound. It was unbearable, and the police were so solemn. Once at Bryan's, the four of us begain a frenzied phone tag with our loved ones and listened to their worries between snatches of the news cast as all the information was slowly trickling in, and the count slowly rose. I remember when there were 2 8 21 22 33, counting the shooter of course. And now we wait for the names. My mother came by to check on us, but I told her I needed to stay there, close to campus and my student family, I needed them. I didn't want to be on campus, but I NEEDED to stay near it, them. Rachel and some of her friends from AJ went to her uncles. We stayed at Bryan's to wait out the night. We had already cried for our dancing sister Reema and a friend of a friend, Ryan. We continued to grieve as Bryan's Professor, Dr. Loganathan was revealed, and then four of his five Measurements Teaching Assistants. Mandy and I's former French teacher, Madame Couture, classmates, Ross and Rachel, the second floor Residential Advisor of my building, Peddrew-Yates' Caitlin, a mere aquantance, Austin, and a hometown boy, Jarret.
