Like many people in the West Springfield community, I truly loved Leslie. It was my absolute pleasure and honor to have taught her in my Applied History class her senior year at West Springfield High School. In her short 20 years her life demonstrated what it means to be a gracious and grace filled human being. Her sense of selflessness is unmatched by any student I have taught in my 27 year career. Leslie led a life guided by idealism, strong values, deep compassion for those in need, a sense of genuine humility,and a wonderful sense of humor.
She wanted to be a historian and her beau ideal of a historian was David McCullough. I can't even tell you how much joy it gave me to introduce her to David, someone with whom I have worked with on the National Council for History Education, at his kickoff event for his book 1776 at the National Archives.
That was a special night! On my desk at home and at school I have a picture of me, David, another student I brought with me, and Leslie.
As I write I can look at the glow on her face as her favorite historian has his arm around her. She gave a copy of that picture to a friend, who could not go with us that night and signed the back of it, "I met David McCullough last night... sigh..."
Leslie was one of those rare human beings who "got it," and understodd what life was about. Many people live well into old age and never "get it." To have been a part of Leslie's life and journey is a humbling experience. Her internal radiance was brilliant and reaffirms what it means to live devoted to other people. She was a gift to all who knew her. I count her among the many blessings of my life.
Leslie always took to heart and then put into action words of people like Martin Luther King, Jr. In his 1967 Christmas Sermon, called "The Drum Major Instinct," he called for people to step up to the plate and serve others. Leslie consistently stepped up to the plate and every time hit a grand slam. She was a Drum Major For Life! Godspeed, Leslie, Godspeed! Thanks for being a teacher, too.

On Monday, April 16, 2007, I was in New Orleans at the annual conference of the National Association for Research in Science Teaching (NARST). This is a list of students I was able to contact between 10:08 am (when I received an email from a student indicating that he could not attend my regularly scheduled 10:10 lecture as Blacksburg Transit was not running, and then turned on CNN) and 1:30 pm. Most students were contacted through AOL Instant Messenger/I-Chat.

I can only begin to convey my sorrow and grief regarding the events of last Monday. Like many of you, I have struggled to find words -- and found it a nearly impossible task. My attention is now focused on developing a plan of action for the rest of the semester. You will find a copy of university procedures for the completion of the Spring 2007 academic semester below. I will be posting an updated schedule and list of assignments shortly, for students who wish to complete all or a portion of the Humanities, Technology and the Life Sciences class.
Our challenge, as a class, is to determine how, if at all, perspectives and tools we have explored and/or were scheduled to explore in this course can assist us in beginning to imagine the post-April 16th world. We are also encouraged by many to return to 'everyday life' and 'everyday tasks' -- even though there is nothing 'everyday' about the situation in which we find ourselves. Building off of Dr. McNamee's statement below, I want to emphasize that I recognize that different students will have different needs and desires -- as well as differing abilities to return to campus or to our class. I am committed to a policy and practice of flexibility. I am committed to supporting you in any way in which I am able. I am committed to you and this university. We all are -- amidst all the diversity of this campus and within our course -- Virginia Tech.

Finally, Governor Kaine has declared Friday, April 20, 2007 a statewide day of mourning for the victims of Monday's tragedy. In many communities, this will include prayer services beginning at noon. In many cases, these prayer services will be predominantly or fully-oriented within the Christian faith. I recognize that there are some students who either are not involved in a faith community or who do not identify as Christian. I recognize that these students may feel particularly challenged in locating resources or support options. Thus, again, I wish to state that my door is open to all, whether or not you continue in the course; that my door is open to students of all faiths, practices, and philosophies; and that I will work with you to assist you in locating the resources you need, no matter what these are.

This has protected me, I think, from being overwhelmed by my response to these events as a former student -- as someone who spent 8 years here earning two degrees; as someone who surprised herself while living in London by answering that she was "from Virginia, from Blacksburg, from Virginia Tech" ... As someone who was thrilled when the men's basketball team was invited to play in the NCAA tournament this year ... How surprising to me, a northeast girl who grew up mainly in PA who eschewed Penn State as an undergraduate college because it was "too big," because it was "too football," because it was "too ..." to find that I, in fact, love this university.
That said, I am writing with an update on our course.
* We will meet on T Apr 24 at our regular time. I encourage all of you, whether or not you believe you will complete any more assignments, to come to class.
* Many of you have already submitted Analysis #2 in Blackboard, and I have received a number of hard copies in my mailbox. If you have not done so already, please, if you are able, bring a hard copy to class when you return. If you have not yet completed Analysis #2, it would be fantastic if I could receive these by F Apr 27th -- however, I am also flexible on this, so please get in touch to discuss.
* If you decide to not complete any additional assignments, for most of you your grade will be based on:

So far, I have come up with a number of different completion scenarios. These include:
1) You can choose to present in class on either Th Apr 26 or T May 1;
2) You can choose to present to me (and any other members of our class who want to come) on Reading Day (Th May 3) -- off-campus location TBA;
3) You can create a webpage or powerpoint presentation by Fri May 4, that I will make available/link to on our Blackboard site for other people to look at.
* 2nd IM Chat -- again, on Tuesday you can discuss with your cohort.
* Current grades: I need to go through all of your blogs as soon as possible to determine your current blog grades. If you have been completing all your required postings and responding to your cohort members, your blog grade will be in the B+ to A+ range. I will do this as soon as possible.
I also expect that grades on Analysis #2 will be no lower than a B/B- (based on past work) and that a large number of you will receive As, as was the case with Analysis #1.

Pittsburgh Police responded to a report of a bomb in a Carnegie Mellon University parking lot yesterday and later deemed the area safe.
Forbes Avenue was closed for more than an hour yesterday afternoon after someone called 911 and allegedly saw a person putting a bomb in a white car.
Police later spotted the reported car and pulled it over in a parking lot on Carnegie Mellon's campus. After inspection the device was rendered safe, according to Pittsburgh Police Zone 4 spokesman Matthew White.
"Someone called in what they thought may have been a bomb," White said. "The car was inspected at CMU, which does a lot of work with the Defense Department, so it was a call we had to take seriously."
Forbes Avenue reopened around 2:30 p.m. yesterday after the Allegheny County bomb squad found a cylinder in the back of the car and deemed it not to be dangerous.
The driver was detained for questioning and an investigation is pending.
White admitted that the recent incident at Virginia Tech has people more anxious and that more precautions than usual are now needed.
"Virginia Tech has everyone on edge," he said. "This week is also the anniversary of the Columbine shootings and the bombing at Oklahoma City."

The Virginia Tech tragedy will continue to resonate for some time to come, and rightly so. Many questions surrounding last Monday's events are yet to be answered, and must be in order for the grieving victims and families to move on from the horror that was April 16th, 2007.
To be fair, there has been no official statement concretely outlining the events of that fateful Monday morning, although what has been pieced together speaks to a rather shabbily-handled situation.
Why was there a delay in the excess of two hours following the first incident before students were notified? Why had President Charles Stegler not declared a campus-wide emergency and locked the school down? Why were students in the classrooms at Norris Hall at 9:10 a.m. trying to make sense of a vague e-mail informing them of the shooting?
The only precautionary measure taken by the campus security apparatus prior to 9 a.m. was to lock down the site of the first incident. Shortly after, an e-mail was sent advising the University community of the incident, recommending caution, and instructing them to contact police with any information. Less than one hour later, the gunman reemerged to massacre 30 people in a nearby classroom. One cannot help but ponder if, had more decisive initiatives been taken, many of the deaths and injuries could have been preventable.
Freak tragedy, yes-unmanageable, no. As the president of Virginia Tech, Mr. Stegler is responsible for the safety of students during emergencies. In the words of Dr. Sharon Javie, former professor of Marketing at LaSalle University, "It is unconscionable that [Stegler] did not lock the campus down after the first two students were shot. You either apprehend the suspect, or you shut the campus down."
I can't say I disagree. While impossible to predict the first shootings, Mr. Stegler has indicated that he thought the first killings were simply the result of a domestic dispute and that the gunman had fled campus. Even so, it's better to err on the side of safety. Mr. Stegler gambled with the safety and well-being of his students and lost miserably.
Dr. William Dunkleberg, former Dean of the Fox School of Business at Temple University and professor of Economics, explained the sensitivity of the issue. "Your first response in such a situation is that it's personal and isolated. It is highly unlikely that what occurred is actually the beginning of a killing spree. You're faced with a dilemma." A dilemma, indeed, but if locking down the campus could ultimately save lives, I doubt many would complain.
Also unnerving is the lack of mechanisms in place at schools to identify individuals like Cho Seung-Hui and get them help before they act out. Described as an introvert, Cho shocked his fellow students and English professor with disturbing and violent plays written for a class, now posted on aol.com.
Issues of free speech and confidentiality would conflict with such systems, but shouldn't there be a point where the line is drawn?

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. _ For ethnic Koreans, hearing that the Virginia Tech killer was also a Korean was shocking in an almost physical way. Although I can speak only for myself, I feel a primeval sense of horror that someone connected to me by ethnicity could commit such a foul act against everything we hold sacred and decent in our common humanity.
Of course this was an act of a lone, disturbed individual who could have been from any race or ethnicity, but I cannot deny that his being ethnically Korean somehow brands me with a mental Scarlet Letter that is visible only to me but nevertheless seethes painfully against the screen of my self-identity as a Korean. While being an ethnic Korean neither automatically qualifies nor obligates me to speak to this horrible heartbreak any more than any one else, there is a terrible connection here that is inexplicable yet all too easy to feel. Judging by the outpouring of anger, condolences, and grief from Koreans everywhere, I am apparently not alone in feeling a terrible connection to this tragedy.
However, I was surprised at the angry resentment that many Koreans, while sympathetic to the victims, feel at this terrible connection forced upon all Koreans by the killer's ethnic identity. This resentment could be felt in the reactions at Ambassador Lee's words at an emotional gathering the day in which the world found out that the killer was a Korean. His use of the word, ``apology,'' elicited a heated public debate. Many felt that, given his position, it was inappropriate. Some felt that he actually put Koreans in danger by somehow painting all of us with collective guilt. Still others felt just angry that he would apologize for something that we Koreans had absolutely nothing to do with.
All these criticism are valid. Perhaps Ambassador Lee did go overboard in his choice of words. However, we must consider the context. This was the evening of the day in which we found out that the perpetrator of the worst mass killing in the U.S. history was a Korean student, and Ambassador Lee was speaking as the representative of all Koreans living in America.
You would be lying if you, as a Korean, did not feel a certain sense of dread and fear upon hearing the news. You would be lying if you, as a Korean, did not recall the violence of LA riots 15 years ago or the fear of Brooklyn boycotts. You would be lying if you, as a Korean, did not feel more vulnerable and targeted than just a moment before.
Of course, you have every right to feel resentful over having to feel more vulnerable just because a crazy killer happened to be a Korean. No one likes to feel powerless. But that does not change the fact that you do feel more vulnerable. As a Korean American who emigrated to the United States in the third grade _ exactly like the perpetrator _ I certainly felt all these and more in the hour that I heard the news of the killer's identity.
I felt the fear because I know how racially divided American society can be just underneath the surface. Just because it's unfair for a group to be collectively labeled by the actions of an individual, it does happen all too easily _ for example, just examine how we Koreans generally think about African Americans to realize how powerful and widespread racial prejudice can be.
I felt the dread because I know how the perpetrator's ethnic identity could lead, in the irrational emotions of the moment, to wrongs against those Koreans who had nothing do to with this horrible incident. We know that racial prejudice can be powerfully harmful and subject innocent people to unfair treatment. There are always those who will seek to confuse and divide us by using such tragedies as a podium for their hate and prejudice. And there are always who listen to the hate.
This is why my first thoughts went to my parents working at a small drycleaners in a New York suburb and how scared they might feel listening to the news. Not because there were any specific threats. Not because the neighborhood has been nothing less than safe and welcoming for them. But because hate and prejudice will seize upon any excuse to do violence.
I know that Ambassador Lee does not technically represent me since I am a naturalized citizen of the U.S. But I also know that someone looking for an excuse for his anger will not be checking my citizenship papers. In a pluralistic society, it's our appearance that defines us first. We, as Koreans, are connected to this tragedy through the identity of the killer, whether we like it or not. And this leaves us feeling more vulnerable, even if only in our own minds.
Therefore, I thank you, Ambassador Lee, for your apology. While you may have gone overboard in your choice of words, I know that you spoke out of your concern for the safety of all Koreans living here in the U.S. I know that you sought to show mainstream America that we Koreans were as devastated by the tragedy at Virginia Tech as anyone else and, thereby, prevent Koreans from being singled out by the inevitability of racial profiling of today's American society. I thank you because I know your words made a difference.
