A Facebook message I received on April 18th from a girl with my same name who attends school in California:
Dear Aislynn,
This may be a lame attempt to bridge some sort of metaphysical gap with a complete stranger, but here goes.
I am a world away from you, here in California where the sun was shining bright and unassuming overhead on the day that terror ravaged your campus. There were murmurs of violence by midmorning, but by the hours of the late afternoon, everyone knew. I don't have anything else to say other than I don't know what to do with myself as the hours continue onward - everything I worried about yesterday seems too trivial for words...
I can't imagine how you feel or the aftershock of the cataclysmic events you and your peers endured yesterday. I just feel as if nothing is real- except for Virginia Tech.
I do not know you, or anyone who lost their life in yesterday's events. But there is something profound I feel - my thoughts and prayers are with you and your peers. I feel very small knowing of the devastation that must grip you, but not actually being able to empathize, to begin to conceive such momentous grief. You and your peers- all those who are broken as a result of yesterday's events- you are in my heart and on my mind constantly. Nothing else is as important as the profound and enduring message of love and human camaraderie. From me to you, across the country, I send all of my love and support. I realize these are intangible sentiments, but they are all I have to offer.

lately, you've been on my heart a lot and i have been meaning to get ahold of you to see how you are, but as lame as an excuse as it is, i've been busy with school. today i went over to tech and visited the tent on the drill field, as i was going around i caught sight of a coffee cup with message on it that was just heartbreaking. i thanked God for not letting this person be harmed and though how hard it must be for the person who wrote it and how confused they must be. and then i saw that it had been written by you. and i lost it.
i want you to know that i am so thankful that you were not in norris. i want you to also know that i know your heart is weary as is mine and that it is ok to be confused and sad. you're are such a wonderful person aislynn!! i love you soo soo much and miss you like crazy. i met karla at young life camp about two years ago and she said she knew you and i thought that was so great because i remembered having drivers ed together and how much lame fun we had :)

Two days ago a tragic event took place in Virginia Tech in the US that shocked not only the people of the United States but people all across the globe. A violent massacre took place there that resulted in thirty two killed, individuals who presented different cultures, religions and nationalities. In a sign of solidarity the people of Palestine in general and those from the Sothern villages surrounding the Holy city of Bethlehem dedicated their weekly nonviolent activity against the building of Apartheid wall to the families of the victims of the Virginia Tech massacre.
Every Friday, Palestinians, internationals, and Israeli nonviolent activists gather in the Southern villages of Bethlehem to protest against the building of the Apartheid Wall that will eventually destroy the livelihood of these villages. This Friday, the protest began with a silent procession by the group of about fifty participants. We carried banners and leaflets with the Virginia Tech logo and statements supporting them in this time of pain. Thirty two olive trees were also carried in the procession to remember each person killed in the massacre. The olive tree is a global symbol of peace and hope.

The planting of the trees was followed by reciting the names of all those who were killed in the Virginian massacre followed by a fifteen minute period of silence before the group moved back to the villages.
The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said "where there is an injustice somewhere ... there is an injustice everywhere." This also means that where there is violence somewhere there is violence everywhere... We need to work for peace somewhere so that peace can also spread every where.

At the Paul N. Elbin Library, we asked students, staff, and faculty to sign an expression of condolence document. The Student Government Association joined in to gather signatures. Our Campus Security staff began a "Stop a Cop" campaign, asking those interested in signing to come to them -- they carried clipboards while making their rounds. We are a small school, but we have mailed our sympathy roster to VT, with 500 signatures. The irony is that VT's tragedy has brought our campus closer together.
We are truly sorry for your great loss.

Early Monday morning Toronto, April 16; very nice day, it's spring at last - you can feel it in the air - maybe the oxygen levels are up a little - there's a craziness in the air, a frenetic kind of feeling...
I punched the computer; threw on the radio; and began to create coffee.
I prime my story-writing brain with <a href="http://www.npr.org/">National Public Radio</a>; but soon the voices will be in the back of my head, and I'll be blogging down a pathway in search of a twig.
The twig appeared on NPR, news at 10:00; a shooting at Virginia Tech, a lock-down, nothing more...
I have been interested in the phenomena of the serial and mass murderers since the 1970's - when a peer of mine took a hunting rifle to school in a nearby town.
In the early eighties <a href="http://www.googlesyndicatedsearch.com/u/memorial2?q=Elliott%20Leyton&domains=mun.ca&sitesearch=mun.ca">Elliott</a> <a href="http://www.googlesyndicatedsearch.com/u/memorial2?q=Elliott+Leyton&domains=mun.ca&sitesearch=mun.ca">Leytons </a>excellent work, 'Hunting Humans' came out; and I gave it a read. I have followed the science of profiling with interest ever since. The most strange and distorted individuals, sometimes offer the most interesting reflections of a culture.
The X-files, the 1990's TV series, starred David Duchovny as Fox Mulder, FBI profiler. The shows writers used up-to-date theory and research to punch up the script. One of my favorites.
I knew right away this was my twig - I also knew this was going to be a lousy day. As a writer though, it would be a rewarding one.
I knew a fast breaking story like this one could change the way news is consumed. In the San Francisco earthquake of 1989, CNN went live for at least 12 hours (I feel asleep), until the next morning. It was the first time a network had done this kind of news coverage. CNN's next big gig was the 1991 war with Iraq. Brought to you live; with the CNN correspondent sending video as American Bombs rained down around him; and anti-aircraft tracer fire lit the sky at mid-night.These two events took CNN from small player to a major in the news business.
Now perhaps the Internet was about to experience a similar metamorphosis.
My plan was to watch a national story unfold in real time on the Internet, and write about the experience.
So I click on my FireFox icon, and Boolean search: Virginia + Tech + Blogs.
I've found the 'Blog 'O' Sphere' is a good place to find citizen journalists close to the scene as a story is breaking - like Baghdad Blogger in 2003 and the Blogs out of Beirut, under Israeli siege in the summer of 2006.

and Support
During the summer of 2007, the Office of Recovery and Support was created for the primary purposes of improving two-way communication with and facilitating provision of support services to the families of those who were killed on April 16, 2007, and also to those who were physically injured and their families. The work of the ORS team has been incredibly demanding. Nevertheless, under the leadership of Jay Poole, they have done a truly outstanding job and have strengthened relationships with those who were injured and their families, and with the families that lost loved ones.
With Jay's planned departure from the role of Director in July, I have consulted a number of people and spent considerable time deliberating over the future of that office. We have been advised by colleagues at other institutions that have experienced similar tragedies that those who were directly affected by the events of April 16 will be looking to the university for various types of support for a number of years to come. Moreover, we have been told and have already witnessed ourselves that the families of those who were lost and the injured students will want to maintain long-term ties to the university. Needless to say, we also want to maintain that connection.
Tending to these relationships is consistent with the vision of the Alumni Association, which "aspires to be a primary linkage between the university and its family of alumni across the globe." All of the injured students eventually will become alumni, and we wish to keep those families who lost loved ones engaged with the university (if that is their wish)Ëœin much the same manner that we seek to engage alumni. Therefore, I have determined that it would be logical to move the Office of Recovery and Support under the senior management area of the Vice President for Alumni Relations, effective July 1, 2008.
At that time, Debbie Day will assume responsibilities as Director of the Office of Recovery and Support in addition to her current duties as Associate Vice President for Alumni Relations. I envision that the ORS will continue to exist as a distinct office under Debbie's direction (within the area of the VP for Alumni Relations) until all or most of the injured students have graduatedËœprobably two more yearsËœand then its functions, which will have scaled back naturally, will be absorbed into the Alumni Relations office.
Following is a discussion of the operations of the Office of Recovery and Support as of July 1.
Mission ˆ The mission of the Office of Recovery and Support is unchanged:
To provide supportËœspecifically including improved two-way communication and facilitation of support servicesËœfor the families of those killed, the injured and their families, and others directly affected by the killings at Virginia Tech on April 16, 2007. Further, the ORS is the central campus location to manage broader recovery efforts of the university community, such as commemoration activities.
Personnel ˆ In addition to Debbie Day as Director, the ORS will include:
 Megan Armbruster, who will continue to work with injured students and their families on a full-time basis as she pursues her Ph.D.
 Scott Johnson, who will continue to work with the families of the deceased students on a part-time basis.
 Anna Beth Benningfield, who, as part of the Provost‚s staff, will continue to work with faculty families on a part-time basis.
 Marilyn Hutchins, who will continue to work with injured students and their families and with families of deceased students on a part-time basis.
 Pam Pettry, who will continue to provide full-time administrative support for the office.
At this time, I would also like to express both my personal and the university‚s deepest appreciation to Jay Poole, Ellen Plummer (Deputy Director), Jerry Cain, Lisa Leslie, and Renae Criner for their invaluable contributions as their work with the ORS nears an end.
Office Location ˆ The ORS will continue to occupy its existing space in the CRC for the next year, after which time the office may move into space in the Alumni Center or elsewhere that better suits the needs of the ORS at that time.
In closing, I have great confidence in Debbie, Scott, Megan, Anna Beth, Marilyn, and Pam and deeply appreciate their willingness to serve the university and those who were directly affected by the April 16 tragedy in this most meaningful way as we move forward. And, I know they will appreciate your support.

GREENCASTLE - When Greencastle-Antrim High School sophomore Kristin Reihart saw the massacre unfold at Virginia Tech in April, a chilling realization hit her - it could happen anywhere.
"Virginia Tech was one of the colleges I considered going to," Kristin said. "If it happened two to three years in the future, I could be one of the students affected."
So Kristin and three of her sophomore friends, Samantha Benson, Ashley Alleman and Tyler Sheeley, took it upon themselves to help. The four developed a plan for donations and presented it to high school administrators.
During lunch periods last Friday, today and on Tuesday, the group will collect donations and sell T-shirts to raise money for the victims and relatives affected by the Virginia Tech massacre.
"I can't imagine what they're going through," said Samantha.
Making donations
Any donations will go toward the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund. Donations will fund grief counseling and communication with victims of the shootings and their families.
Those who donate a minimum of $1 will receive a white, orange and maroon ribbon in memory of the lives lost at Virginia Tech. The students plan to make all the ribbons.
The group also designed the T-shirts, which can be purchased for $10 apiece. The maroon shirt has orange lettering with the date of the shooting, April 16, 2007, and "Remember Virginia Tech" on the back.
Shirts come in small through extra large.
Kristin said it will take about a week to get the shirts made. Those who ordered T-shirts and received ribbons will wear them on the same day to honor Virginia Tech students and show support.
Creating awareness
Several local schools dealt with serious threats following the Virginia Tech shootings on April 16. Kristin and Samantha said it's scary to think about what could happen at home.
"We're trying to bring awareness. We share in the pain of that community," Kristin said.
"It's scary (when there's a threat) because kids don't know if it's really a threat or not," said Samantha.
The students who threaten others or carry out terrifying events, like that at Virginia Tech, often feel they have no way out, Samantha said. Peer pressure and bullying make them look for another way to cope.
Although G-AHS has not dealt with threats, students said they have seen bullying in the schools.
"It's nothing major, but we want people to realize what happened and how people from that area feel," added Tyler. "We should feel for them."
The students said other organizations raised money for victims, but they noticed nothing had been done at G-ASHS, so they started a fund-raiser themselves.
"It's an amazing thing with the heart of these students," said assistant principal Ed Rife. "They pulled this together themselves. It's not for a class, it's all about making a difference."
By showing their respect, Rife said the students created a way for the Greencastle "family" to help another family in need, he said.
The project
The fund-raising event took about three weeks to plan. Students met with the guidance counselor, then presented the idea to administrators.
Samantha said many teachers commented they were proud the students organized the project on their own. No one used it as class or extra-curricular credit.
