This was taken from the drill field, and the building is Burress Hall. After the ceremony was over, we all stood holding our lights for nearly ten minutes of silence. Finally, someone somewhere started singing the school song, and the crowd joined in. It progressed to various football chants - that's what Hokies know to do when in a large crowd. It wasn't especially somber, but I think everyone had had enough somberness already.

While watching the evening news this week, we heard brilliant accounts of heroism in response to the Interstate 35W bridge collapse into the Mississippi River. Many of these stories are reminiscent of the ones we heard years ago during the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. It seems the citizens of this country can band together to accomplish so many things in times of national crisis and tragedy.
Yet, most of America's tragedies play to a deaf ear. People have no qualms with stepping in the way of danger when catastrophe strikes, but no one seems to be around to help save people from the smaller tragedies.
Sametta Heyward's babysitter had just canceled when Heyward was called in to start a double-shift at a county-run group home in South Carolina. Her two children, age 1 and 4, were left locked in her car for eight hours in the sweltering heat of that summer day.
After finding her unconscious, barely alive children in her car, Heyward tried her hardest to revive them by biting and kicking them.
Eventually she conceded to defeat. She quietly bathed and dressed them, then cached their bodies under the kitchen sink in garbage bags.
We as a nation need to band together to stop disasters - both big and small. It's obvious the deaths of these two small children were easily preventable.
At the bridge disaster, Gary Babineau was a lifeline to at least a dozen people he helped save. This woman had no lifeline - for a number of reasons.
Experts expect psychological testing of Heyward to show she was mentally unstable at the time.
Mental instability? This sounds gravely familiar to the April 16 shooting at Virginia Tech, where the mentally unstable Seung-Hi Cho killed 32 people and wounded 25 before ending his own life.
Of course, Heyward wasn't just mentally unstable - she was desperate, and without a babysitter, she had no choice.
As a near-socialist, I'm an advocate for universality of health care, which would include mental counseling.
Nevertheless, as citizens, we need to act in our communities and undertake the challenge of weaving a tighter bond among ourselves.
A paramount study last year from the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago compared figures from 1985 to modern-day findings, and concluded that Americans have fewer close friends and, even more important, fewer connections with other community members.
Camaraderie doesn't present itself in the wake of disaster anymore than it does in our every day lives, so long as we allow it to.
Where was Heyward's neighbor down the street or her friend across the block? Who was around to detect the early signs of mental illness?
Obviously, even the best denizen can't do it all - and that's where we need government help. This woman shouldn't have had to work eight hour shifts, because we ought to have a living wage set. We should have free daycare of which low-income, single moms can take advantage. We should have free health care - including psychiatric therapy - that would help people cope with problems they're experiencing.
But in the end, no amount of government programs can do the same for someone as a Johnny-on-the-spot do-gooder.

<b>New leader reaching out to Va. Tech</b>

Not even three weeks into her term, Student Body President Eve Carson has found herself trying to console both the UNC and Virginia Tech campuses.
Hours after learning of the Va. Tech tragedy, in which 32 people were killed by a suicidal student gunman, Carson, along with student body presidents from other schools in the Atlantic Coast Conference, formed an e-mail listserv to send messages of condolence to Va. Tech student government leaders.
"Hearing the news was just so incredibly shocking," Carson said. "The listserv was a way of reaching out. In a moment of need, there's nothing like having someone to reach out to you."
Carson said she hopes to expand the communication between the schools by encouraging UNC student leaders to reach out to their counterparts in Blacksburg.
"We're asking people to send their counterparts an e-mail or a letter," Carson said. "Just something to let them know you're thinking about them. We thought it'd be important to show that we were caring about the Virginia Tech community."
Carson said that the matchup program is a collaborative idea and that she has been motivated to reach out because of her experiences with the death of Jason Ray, the UNC senior who portrayed Rameses for three seasons .
"When Jason Ray died, I received a number of letters from people expressing their sympathy," said Carson, who took office the week after Ray's death. "I thought it was so incredible. It's nice to know that others are with you and thinking of you."
Carson also is talking to UNC athletics officials about putting Va. Tech emblems on baseball helmets and working with other ACC schools to coordinate a full-page advertisement in the Collegiate Times, the Va. Tech student newspaper, expressing support during the wake of the tragedy.
Former Student Body President Seth Dearmin said communication among students was the path toward healing last March when nine people were injured after UNC alumnus Mohammad Taheri-Azar drove a rented sport utility vehicle through the Pit.
"After the incident, communication was positive and crucial," he said. "As a result, we brought panels together and councils to talk about what had happened and what it meant on a larger scale."
James Allred, who was student body president-elect at the time, said finding outlets for students' feelings was also important in handling the incident.
"We really focused on how to help students express the shock and concern they felt," he said. "As president, I think the first duty is to make sure the student body has a way to cope."
Dearmin said that even though the Pit incident was different than the Va. Tech tragedy, being student body president during any significant event is stressful.
"It's a lot of pressure that gets thrown on you," he said. "It's pressure that comes out of nowhere for an event that you have no control over. It comes out of the blue, but it does provide a good learning experience."
Carson said she hopes communication will help foster better ties between UNC and Va. Tech.
"It's important to show our commitment to Virginia Tech," she said.
"We want to be in personal touch and personal communication with people at Virginia Tech. Hopefully, we'll be better connected in the future."

Focsaniul va avea, de luna viitoare, un nou cartier, "Erou prof. dr. Liviu Librescu", situat chiar in centrul orasului, in jurul templului evreiesc, construit in 1896.
Consiliul Local Focsani a decis, saptamana trecuta, sa atribuie fostului cartier evreiesc numele profesorului in semn de omagiu pentru ca si-a aparat cu viata studentii in timpul masacrului din 16 aprilie de la Universitatea Virginia Tech din SUA.
Propunerea se afla acum la avizare la Comisia Judeteana de Atribuire de Denumiri de pe langa Institutia Prefectului, urmand sa fie aprobata in cateva zile.
Decizia municipalitatii focsanene a fost salutata si de fostii studenti ai profesorului evreu de origine romana. Tinerii au facut o baza de date digitala cu toate materiale publicate in lume despre masacrul din 16 aprilie. Baza de date, care cuprinde peste 350 de documente, poate fi accesata pe site-ul www.april16archive.org. Profesorul Liviu Librescu a stat la Focsani pana la varsta de 14 ani.
