<text><u>VT</u>
<b>Written by Al Shoemaker
In memory of those who died at Virginia Tech, May they always be with us</b>

<i>This poem is dedicated to all that were lost,
Because someone wanted power and lives were the cost

For all the ones that sat there in fear,
For all the ones that shed many tears,
And for the ones who lost their loved ones, so kind and dear

We give a salute to all of them that tried to protect,
From a foolish madman that had a defect

Admiration should be given to all those that went to a better place,
Because their bravery shined, that moment they looked death in the face

For all the ones that suffered grief,
We hope very much that their pain will only be brief

Many sat there in caution, petrified like stone,
As that bad man took many lives, before he took his own

This is for all the ones who managed to stay so strong,
During that horrible moment, that felt so very long

They had to be so brave, to be so filled with hope,
And we wish good for the families, who are now trying to cope

Now is the time to spread peace and love,
In remembrance of the ones that now float above

No one knows why this era has already become such a sad time,
But now we must stand up, to prevent such similar crimes

We must stop other things from going on now,
How this became such a scary world, no one really knows how

We need to stop murders, racism, gang violence and gay bashing,
And we need to stop theft, violence, and window smashing

So let&#39;s help all the victims, families, and survivors and show that we all care,
Help them on their feet and help them recover from this scare,
And clean this death and sorrow out of our air,

So now we want to give love, to those whose dreams were wrecked,
And everyone else, who was there at Virginia Tech</i>

--

<b>Author&#39;s Comments</b>

It was very tragic, what happened a few days ago at Virginia Tech, so I wrote this poem in honor of the victims, survivors, families, and everyone else related to Virginia Tech, and to inspire others to help the cause. May all the lost ones rest in peace.

<text>Today, I had the opportunity to attend the Penn State Blue & White football game. What an experience to be blessed with after this terrible week&#39;s happenings. It was truly inspiring to see the support for Virginia Tech. Everywhere I looked, students and alumni, friends and family were wearing Hokie orange and maroon. It&#39;s so hard to describe the pride I felt seeing this rival school sending their love, prayers and respect to VTech. It is amazing how we as a society can come together and love and pray for those who are hurting - now wouldn&#39;t it be more amazing if we could do the same every day, good or bad?

The students formed the VTech logo before the start of the game.

Guns kill people. People kill people. Guns help people kill people.

It&#39;s an inevitable truth that firearms in the wrong hands lead to the deaths of innocent people. As a nation, as students, we witnessed and felt the tragic deaths of 33 individuals; Virginia Tech is a forever-changed campus, cloaked in confusion and fear, anger and resentment.

Pointing fingers and placing blame does no good, but learning and moving forward in such a way that will prevent similar future tragedies is not only a good idea, but a necessary one. And in order to make positive, permanent, preventive change that will ensure not one more innocent life will be taken from mass shootings in our nation, we must address the issue of gun control.

This is not a liberal or a conservative issue. It&#39;s not a rural or urban argument. This is a conversation among Americans who value their lives and their neighbors&#39; lives.

Gun control has become such a politically taboo subject that politicians, on both sides of the fence, avoid discussing it and refuse to make it a part of their campaigns for fear they will lose Midwestern, Southern, rural and many conservative voters.

"Cries for stricter gun-control laws by some Democratic lawmakers following the Virginia Tech mass murders have been met with caution from their party leads," William Douglas wrote in his Fort Wayne News Sentinel article "Democrats unlikely to revisit gun-control legislation."

"Other Democrats recommend steering clear of the issue because it could jeopardize their party&#39;s recent gains in pro-gun Southern and Western states," Douglas wrote.

It&#39;s still unclear as to whether or not the Bush administration plans to officially address the issue; the Chicago Tribune quoted the administration as saying, "We understand that there is going to be, and there has been, an ongoing national conversation about gun control ... We are going to be participants."

Whether those conversations happen in a few days or in a few weeks, they need to happen soon.

Regardless of what our forefathers meant by "the right to bear arms" in the Second Amendment, we live in a society where legally bearing arms has proven to be lethal. Admittedly, only a few of the many who purchase and own guns use them in inappropriate ways, but when the few engage in destructive behavior that affects the masses, they have to give up some of their rights in order to protect all of society.

Social contract theories have been around since Locke, Hobbes and Rousseau. When individuals have full autonomy, they argued, their choices are completely their own - whether those choices are negative or positive, and no matter how they affect others. In order to live in a society where we don&#39;t live in constant fear for our safety, we agree to give up some autonomy to provide social order.

Relinquishing the right to own personal firearms to ensure the safety of the society at large seems like a pretty decent compromise.

While a full ban on firearms may be outlandish and farfetched, stricter restrictions are not. Currently, gun owners have to go through a registration process that involves, among other things, submitting a record of one&#39;s mental health.

These restrictions need to be stricter, enforced to higher standards and maintained better. Only 17 states send medical information in for full background checks, reported Michael Luo of The New York Times in his article "Gun control questions raised."

Virginia Tech shooter Cho Seung-Hui had a "stay in a psychiatric center under a magistrate&#39;s order" in 2005, the article reported. Virginia officials say that Seung-Hui was found to be legally eligible to purchase handguns, an immediate red flag about the inadequate gun-ownership registration policies that are currently in place.

The Bush administration and other sources keep reiterating that it&#39;s "too soon" to have these gun-control arguments, that we need to "take a deep breath" for a while before we deal with these issues.

It&#39;s not. And we can breathe while we make policy changes. Gun abuse is an issue far too serious to put on the back burner until the country calms down, until everyone heals. It&#39;s in this time of pain that we need to begin these conversations; that we need to pressure our representatives to consider changing their views.

Thirty-three lives were taken on April 16. Are we going to wait around for another mass shooting before we consider changing our policies, or are we going to step up and speak out against gun-violence and demand change?

I choose safety. I choose change. I hope you do, too.</text>

I attended the vigil for Virginia Tech Tuesday night, and it was extremely touching. My thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by Monday&#39;s shooting.

It is times like this when we ask ourselves how someone could even be capable of carrying out such an event. However, the one thing that this is not a time for is playing the blame game. The day of the shooting, the media was already pointing fingers at whomever they possibly could.

I&#39;ve overheard some blaming society. I&#39;ve heard some blame the president of Virginia Tech. And I&#39;ve heard some blame gun control laws.

There is a time and place for everything, and at this time, there is no place for politics or playing the blame game. It&#39;s a horrible disrespect to all those who died, who deserve our supporting thoughts and prayers, not our fingers in others&#39; faces.

Colleges Weigh Students&#39; Safety vs. Free Speech

Subject: RE: Bernstein piece, May 20, Schools Struggle With Dark Writings

Regarding Elizabeth Bernstein&#39;s piece "Schools Struggle With Dark Writings" (May 20): Ms. Bernstein misses a crucial point in conflating Mr. Barber&#39;s experience at UVa-Wise with the plight of T. Hayden Barnes at Valdosta State University.

Bernstein implies that the school should have afforded Barber more latitude than it did because the context was that of "a classroom assignment for which he was expected to exercise his imagination"

With respect, I think it is the situation was more complex than she allows. Since his arrival on campus in Fall of 2007, Mr Barber strategically sought to make himself a very public figure. He advocated extremely controversial viewpoints in a series of inflammatory articles in his underground newspaper, wherein he also regularly targeting "liberal" faculty for views he deemed to be anti-American. And to top it all off, he publicly outed himself as a homosexual in the same newspaper - around about the time he was asked to appear in court to be prosecuted in a case of sexual assault case against a fellow male student.

Given this history of attention-seeking antics on campus, the comparison to the plight of Barnes is erroneous. Barnes was a social activist who did nothing to threaten anyone. As the record suggests, Barber had a penchant for generating controversy simply for the sake of it. Where Barnes&#39; actions were focused on raising awareness about an important issue, Barber&#39;s actions were of a rather more egotistical nature, focused simply on raising awareness about himself.

In complaining about the infringement on his right to freedom of speech, Mr. Barber demonstrates his complete failure to understand the fear his actions induced in the campus population that day. Indeed, having only last year graduated with my PhD from Virginia Tech, I can tell you that if I had been in Mr. Scalia&#39;s position receiving that paper, I would likely have been traumatized for life.

Had Mr Barber been allowed to remain in school, there would have been a revolt among faculty and students alike. The school was right to find whatever legal means it could to keep him from ever setting foot in the place again.

                <text>News Brief

By staff writers
18 Apr 2007

World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary the Rev Dr Samuel Kobia has expressed "deep sorrow" over "this new horror of random violence" that took place at Virginia Tech University on Monday 16 April 2007. To his prayers for the families and the wounded, he added international church concern for more effective regulation of firearms.

"Churches around the world join churches and councils of churches in the US in sending sympathies to those who are suffering, and in upholding parishes in Virginia in their ministry during these difficult days", said Dr Kobia in a statement published yesterday.

Dr Kobia affirmed that "In deference to those who have died and with concern for the future, we all must ask why such killings happen so easily. Why are these incidents repeated as if there are no remedies?

"We are all Virginians in our sympathy, but many people around the world are also Virginians in their vulnerability to the misuse of unregulated guns", Kobia declared.

"Wanton killings", "indiscriminate use of armed force" and "widespread availability of deadly weapons" are features of the Virginia tragedy but are also present daily in Darfur and in Iraq, he said.

Dr Kobia called for "firm and appropriate controls" on the globalized trade in small arms. He notes, among other factors, that the "pro-gun position adopted by the US administration" has been "one of the major obstacles" to progress toward that goal.

The World Council of Churches, which brings together Protestant, Orthodox, Anglican and indigenous churches across the globe, has a longstanding concern for combating violence.

The Decade to Overcome Violence and build a culture of peace has brought together church and civic groups. It has included a &#39;peace to the city&#39; initiative which included action on gun crime and domestic attacks.

                <text>by Ruben Maqueda

Like every other American, I was shocked and horrified by the shootings that took place at Virginia Tech. I thought of the students and so many young, promising lives suddenly cut short. I thought of the professors who sacrificed their lives for their students, and whose vast knowledge was now lost to the world. I thought of the survivors and the scars, physical and emotional, that they would bear after experiencing such brutality. I thought of the friends and families of the victims. Having lost my own mother eight months earlier, I knew the painful road that lay before them and how this one day would change them forever. This shrine is a tribute to the victims, 27 students and 5 professors, who lost their lives on April 16, 2007.

In the Mexican culture, Day of the Dead is a very important holiday. It is believed that on the night of November 1, the spirits of the dead return to earth to visit their loved ones. Families go to the cemeteries on that day to honor their dead by scrubbing headstones, cleaning the graves, and decorating the gravesite with candles, flowers, photos, sugar skulls and offerings of food and drink. I wanted to incorporate some traditional Day of the Dead elements, while adding elements of college life and some unique touches of my own.

I was very touched when I learned that the university was posthumously awarding degrees to all of the students killed in the shootings. What you see here is, in effect, a graduation ceremony. Sugar skulls bearing the name of the deceased are a very traditional element of the Day of the Dead. The skulls, decorated with brightly colored frosting, foil, and other items, are placed on the shrine. There are 32 papier-mache skulls adorning the shrine, with the larger skulls honoring the professors. Each skull bears the name of one of the victims, and each skull wears a graduation cap with the Virginia Tech logo over the tassel. In addition to a skull, there is a candle for each victim.

The box above the professors houses an image of George Washington. I thought that since this is their first Day of the Dead, the spirits of the victims might need a guide to show them the way back. Since George Washington has been dead for over 200 years, I thought he would be familiar with the process and would make a fitting guide for them because of his strong association with Virginia. The background of the shrine has the twelve constellations of the zodiac painted on it to represent not only the birthdays of the victims, but the passage of time as well.

There are books, labeled with the subjects taught by the professors, which represent their lives, their knowledge, their education, and their status as educators. On the sides of the shrine are 598 origami cranes. If the ages of the students are added up, it totals 598, so each crane represents a year of life.

Working on this shrine was a labor of love for me. I made the skulls out of cardboard boxes, and I discovered that the strongest and best cardboard came from the core. If you look at a cross-section of a piece of cardboard, the core is corrugated and that is what gives the cardboard, or the box as a whole, its strength. What happened at Virginia Tech was devastating, and we will never be the same. What we have to do is find our core and use that strength to heal.</text>
