Two days ago a tragic event took place in Virginia Tech in the US that shocked not only the people of the United States but people all across the globe. A violent massacre took place there that resulted in thirty two killed, individuals who presented different cultures, religions and nationalities. In a sign of solidarity the people of Palestine in general and those from the Sothern villages surrounding the Holy city of Bethlehem dedicated their weekly nonviolent activity against the building of Apartheid wall to the families of the victims of the Virginia Tech massacre.

Every Friday, Palestinians, internationals, and Israeli nonviolent activists gather in the Southern villages of Bethlehem to protest against the building of the Apartheid Wall that will eventually destroy the livelihood of these villages. This Friday, the protest began with a silent procession by the group of about fifty participants. We carried banners and leaflets with the Virginia Tech logo and statements supporting them in this time of pain. Thirty two olive trees were also carried in the procession to remember each person killed in the massacre. The olive tree is a global symbol of peace and hope.

Once we reached the path created by the by the bulldozers for the building of the Apartheid Wall we dug the earth and plated the thirty two olive trees in a row - instead of building an ugly wall that divides people, let us plant trees that bring people together. Several of the participants made statements condemning the violence that we all, as the human family are witnessing and condemning the building of the Apartheid wall and the killing of innocents. Over 150 Israeli soldiers came to dismantle our protest. Our commitment to nonviolence and to achieve our goal completely paralyzed their weapons and their goals and eventually our power made them withdrawal. The planting of the trees was followed by reciting the names of all those who were killed in the Virginian massacre followed by a fifteen minute period of silence before the group moved back to the villages.

The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said "where there is an injustice somewhere ... there is an injustice everywhere." This also means that where there is violence somewhere there is violence everywhere... We need to work for peace somewhere so that peace can also spread every where.

Elmhurst Press

ELMHURST, IL - The April 16 tragedy at Virginia Tech has Elmhurst College officials looking at ways they can make their own campus more secure.

One of those ways is to teach the community how to respond to danger signs among students, said Tony Leggett, director of campus security.

"We&#39;ve done a number of things," he said. "We sent out a letter to give students some of the warning signs, how to report if someone on campus they know (is) emotionally distressed."

He also has been in contact with the Elmhurst Police Department. Sometime this summer, police will rehearse practice responses to an on-campus shooter, Leggett said.

Charley Henderson, director of public relations, said the Virginia Tech massacre has everyone thinking about how safety measures can be improved.

"This campus is essentially safe, but you never say never," he said.

                <text>Friday, April 27, 2007

Early Monday morning Toronto, April 16; very nice day, it&#39;s spring at last - you can feel it in the air - maybe the oxygen levels are up a little - there&#39;s a craziness in the air, a frenetic kind of feeling...

I punched the computer; threw on the radio; and began to create coffee.

I prime my story-writing brain with <a href="http://www.npr.org/">National Public Radio</a>; but soon the voices will be in the back of my head, and I&#39;ll be blogging down a pathway in search of a twig.

The twig appeared on NPR, news at 10:00; a shooting at Virginia Tech, a lock-down, nothing more...

I have been interested in the phenomena of the serial and mass murderers since the 1970&#39;s - when a peer of mine took a hunting rifle to school in a nearby town.

In the early eighties <a href="http://www.googlesyndicatedsearch.com/u/memorial2?q=Elliott%20Leyton&domains=mun.ca&sitesearch=mun.ca">Elliott</a> <a href="http://www.googlesyndicatedsearch.com/u/memorial2?q=Elliott+Leyton&domains=mun.ca&sitesearch=mun.ca">Leytons </a>excellent work, &#39;Hunting Humans&#39; came out; and I gave it a read. I have followed the science of profiling with interest ever since. The most strange and distorted individuals, sometimes offer the most interesting reflections of a culture.

The X-files, the 1990&#39;s TV series, starred David Duchovny as Fox Mulder, FBI profiler. The shows writers used up-to-date theory and research to punch up the script. One of my favorites.

I knew right away this was my twig - I also knew this was going to be a lousy day. As a writer though, it would be a rewarding one.

I knew a fast breaking story like this one could change the way news is consumed. In the San Francisco earthquake of 1989, CNN went live for at least 12 hours (I feel asleep), until the next morning. It was the first time a network had done this kind of news coverage. CNN&#39;s next big gig was the 1991 war with Iraq. Brought to you live; with the CNN correspondent sending video as American Bombs rained down around him; and anti-aircraft tracer fire lit the sky at mid-night.These two events took CNN from small player to a major in the news business.

Now perhaps the Internet was about to experience a similar metamorphosis.

My plan was to watch a national story unfold in real time on the Internet, and write about the experience.

So I click on my FireFox icon, and Boolean search: Virginia + Tech + Blogs.

I&#39;ve found the &#39;Blog &#39;O&#39; Sphere&#39; is a good place to find citizen journalists close to the scene as a story is breaking - like Baghdad Blogger in 2003 and the Blogs out of Beirut, under Israeli siege in the summer of 2006.

Interesting, No Bloggers, No MySpace...

List, List, List. Common thread, come on. What&#39;s common other than VTech?

Facebook! Everyone at Virginia Tech is on Facebook!

So I joined.

Apparently, so did a &#39;<a href="http://www.alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details?q=&url=facebook.com/">million</a>&#39; other people.

I&#39;m exploring its Web 2.0 possibilities now.

Yin & Yang, Dam Yin & Yang.

                <text>Presidential Policy Memorandum No. 241

TO: All Virginia Tech Employees

FROM: Charles W. Steger

DATE: May 16, 2007

SUBJECT: Handling Information Requests About Events of April 16, 2007

Approved by the President: May 16, 2007
Effective Date: Immediately
Expiration Date: Indefinite - to be determined

As you know, Governor Kaine has appointed an independent Virginia Tech Review Panel ("the Massengill Panel") to review the events of April 16 and the surrounding circumstances. The Panel has retained the assistance of a private consulting company, TriData Corporation, in conducting the review.

As I stated in my comments to the Panel last week in Richmond, the university will provide all information requested to assure a comprehensive review. To accomplish this, your assistance is needed.

In order to ensure an orderly and complete response to requests for information from the Panel, I have appointed Lenwood McCoy to serve as the university&#39;s liaison with the Panel. Mr. McCoy is a very experienced retired employee who is highly respected and very knowledgeable about the university. Mr. McCoy will clear and coordinate all responses to requests for information relative to the events of April 16, including those that originate from individuals or groups other than the Panel.

Most requests to you or your unit for information about the events of April 16 will come from Mr. McCoy, and you should respond fully to his requests. However, if you receive a request from elsewhere, do not respond directly; rather, forward the request to Mr. McCoy. You may contact Mr. McCoy at mccoy@vt.edu or 540-231-0066. There are to be no exceptions to this process.

As you can well appreciate, there are a number of federal and state laws, as well as other legal considerations, associated with what information the university can provide and under what circumstances. Regrettably, we expect that there will also be individuals pretending to be associated with the review who may attempt to get information from you. Mr. McCoy can ensure that the university complies with applicable laws relative to the release of information and can also verify the identities of those making legitimate requests.

Finally, I want to advise you of three internal working groups that I have established to help us determine what steps the university can take to lessen the risk of such tragedies in the future. They are:

Telecommunications
Infrastructure -- locking systems, surveillance, etc.
Interface between Counseling, Judicial Affairs, Academic Affairs, and the legal system.

Let me reiterate that Mr. McCoy will clear and coordinate all responses to requests for information relative to the events of April 16, including those that originate from these working groups, the Panel, or any other individuals or groups.

Further, let me also take this opportunity to remind you that:

All requests for information made under the Freedom of Information laws should be referred immediately to University Legal Counsel: Kay Heidbreder, heidbred@vt.edu, 231-6293.

As standard practice, all media requests for information should continue to be referred to University Relations: Larry Hincker (Hincker@vt.edu, 231-5396) or Mark Owczarski (maowczar@vt.edu, 231-5223).

Most importantly, thank you for your assistance and support during these difficult times.</text>

<text>LUV CNU was formed in April of this year especially to record the song "Children of April", which is a tribute to the victims lost at Virginia Tech on 4/16/07. Based at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, where three of the vocalists go, LUV CNU offers this song as a gift to the VT community. A "no vocals" version has been added in case anyone wants to use the song to pay their own tribute. It is our hope that this song will bring some comfort to those who need it, and honor all of the victims who so richly deserve it.

LUV CNU is: Emily Bettendorf, freshman, CNU - vocals. Joe Fitzpatrick, freshman, CNU - vocals and bass guitar. Frank Jordan, songwriter - vocals and guitar. Jason Kronstain, senior, Denbigh High - drums. Geyo Maganis, senior, Bruton High - keyboards. Will Smith, freshman, CNU - vocals. Tommy Fisher recorded and mixed Frank Jordan&#39;s tracks. Woody Bradfield of Independent Recording Services (I.R.S.) arranged the strings and recorded the remaining tracks, then mixed and mastered them all.
