To the Students, Faculty, and Staff of Virginia Tech
As you can imagine, there remains significant ongoing media interest in Virginia Tech in light of the tragedy that occurred on our campus last April 16. As is customary for an event of this magnitude - one that gripped not only reporters, but the entire world - there will be anniversary coverage on or around April 16, 2008.
We expect again to have many, many reporters, broadcasters, and cameras on campus during that week and/or at the remembrances planned for that day.
As I did last year, let me again apprise you of our policy and the law. Our university is public property. Roads are public thoroughfares. We cannot bar the media, although many have suggested it. We will be working to provide appropriate but limited access to the campus. I believe that most were respectful of you and the circumstances of our healing last year.
Reporters (or other visitors) are never allowed in classrooms without the faculty member's permission. This is a moot point, since classes are cancelled on April 16. Still, we are apprising the media to refrain from entering academic buildings before or after April 16. Residence halls are always off limits to any visitor unless approved by a resident or a member of the student affairs' leadership. Spaces like offices and labs are always controlled by the occupants. Certain university buildings have nominal public access and you may bump into a reporter. If a building is open to the public, it is open to all members of the public.
What should you do if a member of the news media approaches you for an interview either on that day or before? You are never REQUIRED to speak to a reporter. Politely telling a reporter 'no thank you' will suffice. If a reporter is particularly insistent, just walk away and do not feel guilty about doing so. We have posted media guidelines at www.remembrance.vt.edu.
However, we have a powerful story to tell. We have prevailed and we are healing. The Hokie Nation is strong. You have represented us well during some very trying times. You have shown the world the special nature of Hokie Spirit and our sense of community. The close-knit nature of this academic community was readily apparent throughout the days and months after April's tragedy and continues.
If interviewed, I would expect a reporter to ask you about April 16. Go only as far as you feel comfortable. You control the discussion. Students and professors with whom I've discussed this possibility are in different places emotionally. Many are ready to move on and speak to the now or the future. Frankly, I like to focus on what we were before April 16 and what we remain today - one of America's leading universities focused on learning, discovery, and engagement. You help invent the future.
Virginia Tech's reputation and legacy are founded on the quality of its people. I have great confidence in the university community and the institution as we continue on the road to recovery.

Last Thursday, February 14th, 2008, Steven Kazmierczak reportedly shot and killed five students, and then turned a weapon on himself at Northern Illinois University. At least sixteen students were wounded in the rapid-fire shootings in this large NIU lecture hall during class. We have few certain details about the shooter, except that he used four weapons, two of which were purchased legally within the past week—a shotgun and a 9mm Glock semi-automatic handgun. Ironically, he purchased two magazines and a holster for the Glock from the same online vendor which sold Cho, the Virginia Tech shooter, one of his guns through a dealer transfer last spring.
Apparently, he was a good student (a former sociology major at NIU) who had no police record. He was pursuing graduate studies in social work at the Urbana campus of the University of Illinois. It was also rumored that he recently had ceased taking mood-modifying medication and had broken up with a live-in girl friend. He was 27 when he died in the large NIU lecture hall. Yet, there was another side to him. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in September 2001, but soon was "administratively discharged" within six months. More recently, he took a job as an officer at the Rockville Correctional Facility in Indiana in September 2007, but he failed to complete his preliminary training after only two weeks, and then never returned to work.
The shooting in DeKalb, Illinois occurred almost exactly ten months after the shootings at Virginia Tech last April, when 33 died, including students in classrooms, some of their professors, and the gunman himself. On November 7, 2007 Pekka Eric Auvinen walked into his high school in Tuusula, Finland, and shot eight people, killing five, and then also turned the gun on himself. There are parallels between these three bloody events: The shooters were young males; they used deadly semi-automatic weapons; they burst into school classrooms to do their damage; they took their own lives. There were apparent differences, too, although as yet we know next to nothing about the 'real' Steve Kazmierczak. Cho had already been identified in the Virginia mental health system as a troubled individual, and a potentially dangerous one at that. And Auvinen and Cho left video and written manifestos. In his testimony, Cho acknowledged the inspiration of Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, who killed twelve of their high-school classmates and a teacher at Columbine in Colorado on April 20, 1999.
How are we to understand the sequencing and connections among Columbine, Virginia Tech, Tuusula, and now Northern Illinois? It is unimaginable that the Valentine Day's Massacre in DeKalb would have occurred in the way that it did without Virginia Tech having occurred, as the December shootings in Finland also demonstrated. Tech is imbedded in DeKalb as its prototype and possibility. Kazmierczak might have found other ways to kill and to die without the example of Tech (and Columbine or Tuusula before it), but he surely framed his actions last Thursday within the scenario of last April in Blacksburg, Virginia.
This is not to suggest that DeKalb is simply a copy-cat killing. What did Klebold, Harris, Cho, Auvinen, and Kazmierczak have in common that led them to enact these epic killings and suicides, on school grounds? It seems they were alone in a crowd; they were alienated, lacking social ties. Whether they were mentally ill or not is somewhat beside the point. They might have been stopped, helped, redirected—yes, even medicated. We are intensely interested in the experience of being alone in a crowd, in Cho's case as an Asian-American outsider on a big-time college/fraternity campus, which considers itself 'Hokie Nation,' —the illusion of tight community achieved through the gridiron Gemeinschaft of the Virginia Tech campus. And in the hours after the NIU attack, the response in DeKalb, Illinois and around the nation was to appeal to the school's athletic mascot, the Husky, and tout "Huskie Spirit." Perhaps we know only this: people more on the inside do not tend to commit mass murder and then take their own lives.
It cannot escape notice that the killers at Columbine, Blacksburg, Tuusula and DeKalb were men. Women usually do not embark on shooting/suicide escapades, even though not even a week before on February 8, 2008 at Louisiana Technical College a female student shot two classmates and then herself in a classroom. Four of the five killed at DeKalb were women students, and many of those killed in Tuusula and Blacksburg also were female. This is a potent admixture: social isolation, male gun culture, fantasies of revenge.
Were the killers evil madmen predestined to wreck havoc? Were they beyond social influence and redirection? They committed mad acts, to be sure. But there is a thin boundary between those who keep their demons within, and at bay, and those who erupt. The answer to these acts of deliberate madness lies not in armoring our campuses but in acknowledging people's interior turmoil and trying to help, where possible. This is difficult amid a sea of faces in large college lecture halls. But can we afford to reduce such acts merely to irreversible psychopathology? Columbine and Virginia Tech have now become a set piece—a media spectacle--with a certain inexorable momentum.

After being advised to stay away from windows and such on April 16, many of the Career Services staff and students who were in our building at the time gathered together in an interior room (our staff lounge). As things were unfolding on campus around us we were watching the news and hearing what was unfolding. This photo was taken as we had just learned of the first seven fatalities in Norris Hall. Everyone was shocked. We couldn't believe what we were hearing. As the morning unfolded an we watched intently we were overwhelmed with grieve that this had happened. We had to be strong for the students who were among us. It was surreal. <p>I took this photo, but it didn't even feel right taking a photo at this time. I only took three photos as it was too upsetting.

New York Yankees Manager Joe Girardi and shortstop Derek Jeter are two of the most recognized names in New York. Girardi, who replaced the historic Joe Torre, is entering his first spring season as the team's manager. Jeter, who is currently batting .317 in his 13th year in the MLB, has played his entire career as a Yankee. He holds the record for most singles hit by a Yankee and recorded his 2,000th career hit becoming the 8th Yankee to reach this milestone. They shared some of their thoughts and views about the game that will take place March 18th here at English Field.
Q: How did this whole production start?
Girardi: Ownership in Mr. Steinbrenner, in a situation like this we felt like it was more important to show what we can to make a difference in this, our hierarchy, and the Steinbrenner family were really the influence.
Q: Since a large part of the lure is for the Hokie audience, do you see your team giving the wrong effort?
Girardi: I think our guys will go all out, we played USF and we won 11-4. A baseball game is a baseball game, we have a lot of respect and we will try to win.
Q: Where were you when (the tragedy) unfolded?
Girardi: I was a broadcaster with YES and FOX and on the exact day I don't know where I was, I was probably on the road. I just remember a sadness, and you try to understand how something like this can happen. I think when tragedies like this happen I try to figure out what it's like to be the family and how they feel.
Q: Any chance you guys are going to keep Billie Crystal on the roster and bring him up to Blacksburg?
Girardi: We'll see if he's a prospect or a suspect!
Q: Whom are we going to be seeing on Tuesday?
Girardi: We plan on bringing all out star players and stacking our lineup. You will see, probably, pitchers that will be on our club or have a really good chance of being on our club. Jeff Karstens will be our starter, he pitched in the big leagues and he is buying for a spot. It kind of depends on who throws the day before. It will be guys that have a realistic shot of being in our bullpen or being a starter.
Q: You had the experience of playing at Northwestern. Are you excited to see if playing the Hokies at English Field will remind you of your days as a student?
Girardi: Anytime you walk on a college campus it brings back fond memories. I think this is a wonderful thing that out team has the opportunity to do. I think everyone is excited and we look forward to having a nice day there.
Q: What do you think it shows about the Yankee organization to give such a generous donation and to make the effort to come down here and play the Hokies?
Girardi: Mr. Steinbrenner cares about people, he's always had a big heart, he's always reached out to communities, and I think it's a great thing for our club because we never know what's going to happen and we never know what's in store for tomorrow.
Q: How serious are you taking this game in regard to injuries and the score etc.?
Girardi: We will play the game hard. Obviously, we don't want anyone on their side to get hurt and we don't want anyone on our side to get hurt. So we'll play the game smart. We'll play aggressive, but we'll play smart.
Q: What does this game mean to you?
Girardi: This really puts things in perspective for us. It's a reminder every day how precious life is and how fortunate we are to have our health on any given day, so for me it means a lot. It's a wonderful opportunity for our players to see that you don't take life for granted.
Q: Are you looking forward to your trip to Blacksburg?
Jeter: I was looking forward to this since last season, usually playing here in New York there is usually a negative story with all the noise but I was always excited to come.
Q: You recall where you were and you reaction last year what do you think you will get out of this?
Jeter: I don't recall exactly, I recall hearing about, seeing the highlights on TV. I assume I was at home. It was unfortunate and I don't think you can find the proper words to describe how you feel. We just want to go down there. You look at what we do, it's entertainment. If we can bring some awareness and make people smile and enjoy themselves for a few hours, that's all that we really can do.
Q: What were your thoughts and feelings after the tragedy?
Jeter: A few of us are familiar with tragedy, obviously being on the team Sept. 11 and dealing with that tragedy in New York. I really had a new appreciation for life after that. And then you have an episode like this at Tech and you realize it's going to be a special trip.
Q: Evaluate your performance so far?
Jeter: It's not good when our manager is laughing in the background, but, it's going as expected. At this point we are playing 5 and 6 inning games, mainly getting timing down and being healthy. In the next week or so we will be working up to play 7 or 9 innings.
Q: Derek, you will arguable be the most famous person to step foot on campus, do you think you will finally be able to find a girlfriend?
Jeter: Unfortunately, we don't get to stay long but if you have anyone in mind let me know!
Q: Along those lines your flying up and back in the same day, are you looking forward to it?
Jeter: I was talking with Rivera and I don't believe he's going on the trip because he has to stay here and he wished he could go. I actually think he's not going because of the cold weather! I haven't heard one person who isn't looking forward to it. Hopefully the fans there, the students there, enjoy our visit.
Q: Any words to the young 18-year-olds on second base?
Jeter: Just don't hit me. We played USF our first spring-training game; I got hit in my first at-bat. I'll step over them if they make a hard slide, just don't hit me with your pitch.
Q: How do you approach this game?
Jeter: We are tying to get prepared to play a season and that's about 2 weeks away. We are in game mode, we are tying to get our work and we are taking this serious.
Q: Will you be pushing despite the score?
Jeter: I'm not sure how many innings we are playing, we have guys that take a lot of pride in performing well and how ever innings we play we are going to do our best and are going to play our best. We don't really have an opportunity to take any games off and we still want to play well.
