NBC방송은 조승희가 보낸 꾸러미를 &#39;멀티미디어 매니페스토(Manifesto)&#39;, 즉 멀티미디어 선언문이라 이름붙여 공개했다. 국내 언론 역시 정도의 차이는 있지만 대부분 이것을 그대로 받아 유포시켰다. 한마디로 미치광이의 교묘하고 기만적인 자기 합리화와 과대망상적인 선전전에 거의 모든 언론이 놀아나 버린 꼴이 돼 버렸다. 그나마 유나바머의 선언문은 전체적인 논지에서는 편견과 왜곡, 그리고 과장으로 점철되었지만 부분적으로는 정교하게 현대 기술산업시대의 병폐를 짚어낸 측면이 없지 않았다. 하지만 조승희의 것은 그것과도 비교할 수 없을 정도다. 유치하다 못해 조악하다. 그것은 길게 말할 가치조차 없는 &#39;악마성의 추접한 배설물&#39;일 따름이다. 우리가 그 배설물을 헤집어 그가 무엇을 먹었는지를 분석할 하등의 이유가 없다. 그가 먹은 것이 문제가 아니라 그의 꼬인 내장이 문제이기 때문이다. 결국 우리는 조승희라는 악마성에 두 번 무릎을 꿇었다. 한 번은 그의 무차별적 총격 앞에, 그리고 또 한 번은 그의 조소에 찬, 하지만 너무나도 기만적인 &#39;선언문&#39;이라 불리는 악마적 배설물 앞에 그랬다. 방송에, 신문에, 인터넷에 온통 그의 악마성 농후한 배설물들이 그 어떤 방해도, 저지도 받지 않고 휘몰려 떠다니고 언론은 그 미치광이의 말을 요모조모 뜯어보면서 그 기괴한 변명과 어처구니없는 기만에 가득 찬 레토릭에 오히려 함몰당하고 만 느낌이다. 조승희의 명분 없는 악의적인 총알들이 일거에 30여 명을 사살했다면 그의 악마적인 배설물 또한 그 어떤 제재도 받지 않고 언론, 특히 방송을 통해 무차별적으로 쏟아짐으로써 우리의 일상은 졸지에 악마성의 폭탄세례를 받은 것이나 진배없다. 자기 발로 걸어들어온 특종 아닌 특종을 낚은 미국 NBC방송은 나름대로 신중하게 내용을 검토한 뒤 방송하고 있다고 말했다. 하지만 그 악마적인 배설물들이 &#39;멀티미디어 매니페스토&#39;라는 그럴 듯한 이름으로까지 포장돼 유포되는 것을 과연 언론의 할 일이라고 해야 할지 냉정하게 되묻지 않을 수 없다. 이런 와중에 이번 사태의 본질인 총기 허용에 대한 논란과 이미 사회문제화된 정신병리의 사회적 코스트에 대한 논의는 흔적도 없이 파묻혀버리고 말았다. 이건 아니다. 이렇게 돼서는 정말 곤란하다. 버지니아 참사에 대해 이젠 냉정해져야 한다. 한 망나니의 엽기적인 악마성에 우리 모두가 이렇게 휘둘려서는 안 된다. 호들갑 떨며 그의 악마성이 유포되는 놀이터를 더 이상 키워줘서도 안 된다. 그런 저열한 악마성을 애써 이해하려 노력할 이유도 없다. 그건 악마성과의 타협일 뿐이다. 악은 악이고 선은 선이지 않은가. 정진호 논설위원 -- Original Source: Joins.com/ JoongAng Daily <a href="http://article.joins.com/article/article.asp?total_id=2701706 ">http://article.joins.com/article/article.asp?total_id=2701706</a> Language A language of the resource ko Title A name given to the resource 저열한 악마성 … 악은 악이다 joins.com joongang daily Document A resource containing textual data.
