I am offended and embarrassed by the editorial cartoon featured on April 18 concerning the shootings at Virginia Tech.

It is insulting and irresponsible to poke fun at such a tragic event that has affected college students worldwide and many UCLA students personally.

If the intent was to help students laugh away their anxieties, it failed. Furthermore, to relate the tragedy at Virginia Tech with current events in the Middle East is preposterous.

As an enthusiastic reader of the Daily Bruin, I ask that in the future your cartoons be more sensitive.

<text>SEVILLE, Spain - The news of the 33 deaths in Blacksburg, Va., on Monday spread a sobering cloud over the UNC students studying in this traditional Spanish city.

Here, where the streets still shut down for the sacred midday siesta, students have pulled themselves away from the news on their computers and have begun to speak with foreign friends and host families about the Virginia Tech shootings.

In places around the world, UNC students are seeing the foreign reaction to the violence at home.

Some of the 436 University students abroad have found that the attacks did not surprise their non-American acquaintances as much as they surprised themselves.

"This has happened so many times in the U.S.," said Kristin Haug, a student from Oslo, Norway, in reference to the Columbine shooting. "It's just so weird that it's still so easy to get a weapon."

Her friends, all Norwegians in Spain for the semester, nodded in agreement outside the school building they share with UNC students.

International media have spotlighted the shootings. On Wednesday, two days after 23-year-old senior Cho Seung-Hui opened fire on Va. Tech's campus, the events were still on the front pages of newspapers in Paris, Dublin, London, Israel, Turkey, Dubai and Iran.

But the impact has not resounded with most foreigners in the same way it's hit Americans abroad. Norwegian students here called the shootings, with no intentional callousness, "typically American."

Michael Turner, a junior from Elizabeth City, first heard of the shootings when he turned on Al Jazeera in Jordan. He stated in an e-mail that local coverage depicted the violence as part of a trend.

"I don't expect it comes off that way in American media, and it certainly doesn't in my mind," he stated.

UNC sophomore Rosanne Niforos, a former advertising representative for The Daily Tar Heel, was in Puebla, Mexico, when she saw news about the shootings online. Lacking her cell phone, she waited for a friend at Va. Tech to change his Facebook.com status to show he was safe.

Now Niforos is watching the reaction on her Mexican campus. Much of the student community there has used the incident to examine U.S. policies in general.

"There are already posters up on campus with pictures of Va. Tech victims being carried out of Norris Hall and then an image superimposed next to it of President Bush, dressed in militant clothes, bullets and a machine gun," she stated in an e-mail. "I haven't seen many of those, but they are there."

UNC students have said non-Americans have asserted that this type of shooting could not happen in their home country. Some, like the Norwegian students, blamed U.S. gun control laws and pointed out that in many European countries, citizens cannot own handguns and that in some places, even police officers do not carry guns.

On ElPais.com, a poll of the day asked readers if there should be more gun control in the U.S. As of Wednesday morning, 93 percent of the 5,790 responders said "yes."

"When people here see this happen, they're really shocked," Spaniard Celeste Castellanos Calvo said. "They see it as an American thing."

        warm weather early this year,

        a bitter frost stunned

        withered, others gray, a fitting
        tableau for the cruelest month:
        flowers slumped, blossoms
in wait, and the living in mosaic
        with its dead.

and the wind, prevailing, kept its long vigil,

Washington has dismissed Seoul's worries about a possible racial backlash in the United States and a crack in their alliance following Monday's shooting rampage at Virginia Tech University, diplomatic sources said yesterday.

Senior U.S. government officials held the South Korean government from sending a condolence delegation to the U.S., stressing the incident would not be an issue of racial prejudice, they said.

In a meeting with South Korean correspondents in Washington, D.C., a U.S. State Department official reiterated the shooting case was made by a U.S. immigrant from South Korea, not South Korea itself, according to reports.

The official said the U.S. government regards any immigrants to the U.S. as its nationals regardless of their ethnics, referring his country as a ``melting pot'' of different peoples, the reports said.

William Stanton, deputy chief of the U.S. Embassy in Seoul, told Korean lawmakers on Wednesday that the incident would not affect the two nation's long-standing relations, their aides said.

The gunman in the shooting rampage, the worst in U.S. history, was identified as Cho Seung-hui, 23, a South Korean studying at the university. Cho was a permanent resident in the U.S.

While many South Koreans have been feared of a racial backlash, U.S. public sentiment was focused on gun control laws, reports said.

Put on high alert, the South Korean government has been making efforts to ensure the shooting rampage would not lead to any ethnic confrontation in the United States.

About 100,000 South Koreans are residing in the United States for study, making them the largest foreign student group in the U.S.

President Roh Moo-hyun expressed deep sorrow three times over the deaths of 32 people in the shooting rampage.

``I and my fellow citizens can only feel shock and a wrenching of our hearts,'' Roh told a news conference after a summit with Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi on Wednesday.
He expressed his condolences to the victims and their families.

I hate it how, whenever we have a national tragedy, journos just eat it up. The TV stations make logos for it, and slogans like "Massacre at Virginia Tech" that become ominous jingles as the anchors and announcers repeat them as a story unfolds.

We're watching Dateline NBC now (for the first time ever), and the exploitation of the V Tech tragedy is enraging. Matt Lauer is just getting too much mileage out of it.

They take every aspect of the story and make it into an entertainment event. They interview grief counselors and find out how that works. They pull out footage of previous shootings. They interview paramedics and enlighten us about their work. It's all for entertainment and to create viewership for the network.

The other people who infuriate me when we have a tragedy is the "expert" morons who get on the tube saying how this could have easily been prevented. Their hindsight is perfect, and they get to promote themselves as experts every time an unpreventable tragedy happens. There's a guy on Dateline now talking about how they should have sent in a massive anti-terrorism response team after the first two people were shot. Come on. We're going to send in the ATF or the army or whomever every time there's a shooting? Ten thousand people are shot to death each year in this country. We can't treat each incident like an act of terrorism as this guy is suggesting.

The other thing I hate about the "if only" experts is that they implicitly blame everyone involved. If only the campus police had done something different. If only the email had gone out sooner warning people to stay in lockdown. None of this was foreseeable - who could have known a campus shooting (like the one that happened in Seattle a few weeks ago) would turn into a massacre?

I say, mourn with those who mourn, and stop exploiting them for publicity and our need to know.

If that weren't enough, they're now doing a story about a guy who survived the Columbine massacre but lost his sister, Rachel Scott. Emotional aftermath and all that. Ugh. "Soon, even prayer was no match for the terror..."

After what is being called the deadliest shooting in American history, the Virginia Tech shooting has many students questioning their safety - especially at the dorms.

"Personally, I don't think there's enough security [at the dorms and] there's a lot of students [to oversee]," said Andrea W., a student at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa.

The first report of killings was at West Ambler Johnston Hall, on Virginia Tech's campus, where a man and a woman were found dead in their dorm rooms.

"I don't know, it kind of widens your scope," said Leigh Hokawa, a student residing at Gateway House, "[but] it doesn't affect me directly or scare me."

According to the management audit conducted by State Auditor Marion Higa and the Office of the Auditor, "Forty-six percent of the students disagree with this statement: 'I feel safe on campus.'" While in the lower housing district, 43 percent of Noelani residents felt that they were "dissatisfied" with security and the safety of their belongings.

"I don't think it's the fault about security," said Elias Allen, a Gateway suite resident. "I always lock my door; I'm not really worried."

Allen also said if he saw someone suspicious, he would confront them and ask then what they were doing.

Student services are working on ways to improve the safety and security for residents on campus.

"We are putting electronic card access on all the doors in [Hale] Aloha, Wainani, Noelani and front doors only of remaining halls," said Laurie Furutani, interim housing director.

Currently, security and housing staff are coordinating their efforts and security is providing training for resident staff members to make safety a priority.

Neal Sakamoto, chief of security at UHM said that new screen windows will be put into all first floor dormitories so that it will be harder for burglars to get into rooms.

"We've been working with the housing staff to improve doors and windows," Sakamoto said.

In the same audit, it was said that "we recommend that the University of Hawai'i introduce legislation for Campus Security to be given arrest authority and the authority to carry weapons."

"I wouldn't arm the guys I have now," Sakamoto said "[but] we've been looking at adding police officers [to security]. They would be actual police officers, they would have arrest authorities and they will carry guns."

The audit also stated that "there are too few security officers on duty to deter and react to crimes."

Security has requested eight additional security staff members and currently has seven pending background checks. Sakamoto said that 14 to 15 more will be requested for their force next legislative session.

Francisco Hernandez, Vice Chancellor for Students, said that orientations will be held for students to keep them aware of certain dangers.

"I don't think we can change the time tables," Hernandez said. As for locks and other upgrades, he said, "The only thing we're going to do now is review our procedures."
