On Monday, April 16, 2007, a sanctuary of learning was violated in Blacksburg, Virginia.  As a Virginia Tech Alumni, father of a  VT student, husband to a VT faculty member, and avid supporter of the Marching Virginians - this tragedy really hit home.  I have spent most of my last 30 years involved in the Virginia Tech community in many ways.  As I attended the convocation, sitting in the club boxes at the stadium because the coliseum was filled, I felt a connection to everyone in that room, on that field, and in the coliseum like I never felt before.  The expressions of grief and sorrow expressed by Governor Kaine and President Bush were eloquent, sincere and uplifting.  To watch all of this unfold, the outpouring of love and support showed how resilient and strong this community is.  But even more so - it showed all of the world, the value and strength and resiliency of a community of people, united in a quest to improve their lives through knowledge.  The love and caring that shined bright in Blacksburg on the day after the explosion of a troubled mans mind was rewarded back with an outpouring of love in unimaginable ways by a world that truly does recognize goodness.  Everyone can hang on to that Hope that leads us to the next hour, next day, to move forward with God&amp;#39;s help.&#13;

                <text>Today was by far the most trying day I&amp;#39;ve experienced in my life. On April 16, 2007 33 people were killed, with 15 more wounded on the Virginia Tech Campus. I know that this is likely not new information, but I repeat it just to add strength to my message. There are not words to properly express just what feelings this day has brought. Surreal doesn&amp;#39;t even begin to describe it. I&amp;#39;ve spoken to more people on the phone today than I have in any day I can remember. The hours spent in the dorm just waiting and watching, seeing the events unfold and hearing the number of dead and wounded climb higher was the epitome of helplessness. This was a tragedy the likes of which have never been seen before, and hopefully will never be seen again. We heard it over and over again. The worst school shooting in US history, they said at first. Then, the worst mass murder in US history as the numbers climbed. Any attempt to convey the emotions and thoughts which barraged my mind today would be futile, vain, and ultimately trite. This was a dark day, near black as night.&#13;
&#13;
That said, I have every confidence in this university and this community. I believe this town is capable of rising to the occasion and overcoming this monumental tragedy. I have no idea what the coming days and weeks hold in store, or even the slightest notion of what will happen as time transpires. There is no set procedure for handling something of this magnitude, by sheer virtue of the fact that it has never happened. In spite of that, I feel we, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, students, faculty and staff all, and the town of Blacksburg, are capable of bonding together to lift each other over this hurdle. We will pay our dues and respects to those deceased. We MUST pay our dues and our respects. Anything less would be a mark upon our record.&#13;
&#13;
It is only then that we can hope to begin the rebuilding and healing process. It will be a long time before any student can step into Norris Hall without immediately drawing to mind thoughts of the events which occurred in that building today. I can only imagine what those who live on the 4th floor of West Ambler Johnston Hall must feel now, and likely for nights to come, in regards to what transpired there as well. However, as time passes and we slowly heal, these things will become easier. And until that time, if we band together, teachers and students, all majors and classes, then we will be able to carry on our work as an academic institution. That is the best way we can hope to honor the memories of those murdered here for years to come. We must continue to learn, to advance the knowledge of our society and our species, that we may continue to understand the universe in all its parts. This applies not only to this university, but to every university in the United States and the world, present and future. I leave you all with one final plea from a freshman at this university, a plea echoed from every corner of this university by every student, faculty and staff member, all who witnessed this tragedy. I beg of you, on Tuesday, April 17, 2007, and for as long afterward as you may be convinced to do so, wear any maroon and orange you can find in remembrance of those innocents slain here. To borrow from several sources throughout the day, for the sake of those lost, put aside your allegiances and college ties for at least a short time. For today, we are all Hokies.&#13;

As I write, events are unfolding at Northern Illinois University where a mass shooting occurred. Already we know that more than a dozen are wounded. This horrific news will certainly bring to mind the hurt, pain, and trauma we experienced less than a year ago. I have sent my condolences and offer of assistance to the president of NIU. Our university community was bolstered and comforted by the outpouring of support from campuses around the nation and the world. I am sure that expressions of support from the Virginia Tech community will mean much to that now suffering campus community.&#13;
&#13;
We should take this opportunity now to reach out and help each other. I am convinced that our university community coped because of our care and concern for every member of the extended Hokie Family. I ask you to look out for your each other and seek help through university services if necessary.&#13;

The article "Students fight for guns on campus" by Claire St. Amant was amazing. I feel she showed the views of both sides without offending either. &#13;

With that said, I noticed the editorial "Gun groups gone wrong." &#13;

This editorial has obviously come from a person who has not adequately researched into concealed handguns and the lawful use of them. &#13;
&#13;
Each year over 170,000 crimes are deterred by law abiding, licensed people who use their weapons without firing a single shot. &#13;
&#13;
Sometimes it&amp;#39;s the mere thought of a weapon being present that can deter the crime. &#13;
&#13;
Students for Concealed Carry on Campus is not saying that those with concealed handgun licenses should be vigilantes. &#13;
&#13;
During our courses, we are taught how to respond not only if we are forced as a last resort to pull the trigger, but also how to react with police officers under any under circumstances. &#13;
&#13;
I don&amp;#39;t want to give the wrong impression when I say this, but even if Baylor police could afford to employ more officers, they can&amp;#39;t always protect us. &#13;
&#13;
There was an instance within a year prior of Virginia Tech at Appalachian Law School. &#13;
&#13;
A shooter entered into the school and began shooting. Two students who were following the state laws of "no guns on campus" ran to their vehicles and broke the law to save the lives of their fellow students. They apprehended the shooter and waited for police to arrive to arrest the shooter. &#13;
&#13;
There was a similar situation in Pennsylvania where a vice principal of a junior high saved his students&amp;#39; lives. &#13;
&#13;
A madman entered the school with a shotgun and began shooting; the vice principal ran to his truck to retrieve his pistol. He returned to stop the shooter from injuring any more of his students. &#13;
&#13;
Yes, our current system can be improved. In the instance of the Virginia Tech shooter, he was let through a loophole that Virginia had set up. &#13;
&#13;
I agree that certain people should not be allowed to own or even touch a firearm. Texas has laws in place that make it a felony. &#13;
&#13;
SCCC bases its views off of statistics and reports that we have collected worldwide. &#13;
&#13;
Our information proves that allowing law-abiding citizens to carry weapons into areas significantly reduces crime. &#13;
&#13;
In the U.S. it deters approximately 15 percent of all crimes and 30 percent of violent crimes. &#13;
&#13;
We are asking that our respective states allow the most law-abiding citizens, with a crime rate of less than 0.001 percent, to be allowed to continue defending ourselves. &#13;
&#13;
SCCC understands two things among many: one is that "gun -free zones" in America are false comforts that have given us some of our nation&amp;#39;s worst tragedies and two, that allowing law abiding citizens to carry concealed weapons reduces crimes and equals the playing field. &#13;
&#13;
We are not countering against or trying to be a replacement for law enforcement. &#13;
&#13;
Those with concealed handgun licenses are a crime deterrent, practicing one of their rights guaranteed in the Bill of Rights. &#13;

Students Abroad Need Answers and Assurance, Not Silence&#13;

To the Editor:&#13;
We are two Columbia College students, currently studying abroad in Paris at Reid Hall. We just found out this afternoon, after a random discussion with British strangers, about the tragedy that took place yesterday at Virginia Tech. They described this event as "the biggest tragedy to happen to the United States since 9/11," and we still have yet to receive any sort of notice or e-mail from the Columbia administration in response to yesterday&amp;#39;s horror. One of our friends, also a student at Columbia and currently living on campus, still did not know about the events. She was sitting in Butler Library completely clueless.&#13;
We feel it is the responsibility of the University administration to make a public response to an event of this magnitude, and especially one that hits so close to home with college students and our concept of university safety. Our aforementioned friend said, "I&amp;#39;m afraid this could happen at Columbia." We must take great care to do everything in our power to prevent this tragedy from repeating itself. A first step toward an informed discussion is a simple e-mail.&#13;

To the Editor:&#13;
I agree with Mara Richard ("Triumph Over Tragedy," April 19) that sexual assault occurs far too often to be tolerated. Richard proposes that Americans "start asking how we can create a culture where women don&amp;#39;t have to defend themselves." What a wonderful world it would be if nobody ever had to worry about protecting herself or her possessions.&#13;
In reality, our society contains a critical mass of people who prey on the innocent and use force to overpower victims. Both the massacre at Virginia Tech and the brutal attack committed near Columbia illustrate the damage a single assailant can do. We may never know what prompted these thugs to action. Incarceration alone can ensure that they won&amp;#39;t ruin more lives, and armed resistance alone would have stopped them in their tracks last week.&#13;

                <text>I was appalled by the commentary titled "VT Killer Needs Closer Look" (April 23) that sought to explain Cho Seung-Hui&amp;#39;s motives in the Virginia Tech massacre. Overall, I got the sense that the article was trying to pin the blame of the Virginia Tech tragedy on the "typical" Asian-American immigrant household as somehow having stunted Cho&amp;#39;s emotional development and ultimately his judgment in making the decision to take the lives of 33 people. &#13;
&#13;
&#13;
The author makes sweeping generalizations about Asian-American families that show a severe misunderstanding of East-Asian culture. Many parenting practices of some Asian-American immigrant parents may seem backward from the Western point of view and may be misinterpreted as stern and unaffectionate.&#13;
&#13;
&#13;
However, we can&amp;#39;t discount these parenting styles just because they&amp;#39;re different and don&amp;#39;t always fit the Western norm. There are thousands of people who have grown up in immigrant families, and many of them have had difficult experiences adjusting to life in the United States. It doesn&amp;#39;t make them any more likely to become emotionally traumatized and commit mass murder. &#13;
&#13;
&#13;
&#13;
Secondly, just because UC Irvine has a large Asian population does not necessitate the sudden need to worry about a UCI student becoming the next perpetrator. This is precisely the kind of dangerous mentality that sets in during times of crisis: that because one person of a racial group committed an atrocity, all the other members of that group are suddenly "on notice."&#13;
&#13;
&#13;
Lastly, it is absolutely ridiculous to speculate that Cho might have not ended up the way he had if he&amp;#39;d had better presents as a child. Most parents do the best to provide for their children but it is impossible for them to satisfy every single one of their children&amp;#39;s material wants. At a certain point, people should wise up and recognize the difference between needs and wants, and that material gifts are not the same thing as a parent&amp;#39;s love.&#13;
&#13;
&#13;
Perhaps the author should have thought about what sort of inferences he was making about the children of the Asian-American immigrant experience before making these ill-conceived assumptions about Cho&amp;#39;s background.&#13;

                <text>I am writing with some reactions I had to three pieces in the New University of April 30, namely Anam Siddiq&amp;#39;s front-page article on UC Irvine&amp;#39;s vigil for the Virginia Tech community members who died on April 16, their families, and the survivors; Emilie Doolittle&amp;#39;s article on under-funded counseling services at UCI; and Philip Grant&amp;#39;s open letter to Chancellor Michael V. Drake on his message to the UCI community in response to the Virginia Tech events.&#13;
&#13;
Grant asks why the chancellor would send a message about 32 dead in Virginia, instead of any number of dead on a given day in Iraq. There is probably no answer, or too many, to that question. I have a different question: Why have the murders of 31 and the suicide of another on a campus in Virginia warranted a campus-wide message and vigil, while the March 30 suicide death by gunshot in a social sciences stairwell of a member of UCI&amp;#39;s own student body goes unmentioned, save a lede in the OC Register and a similar one at the beginning of Doolittle&amp;#39;s article?&#13;
&#13;
Did this student&amp;#39;s life mean less than any one of the victims at Virginia Tech? Does the proximity of his death, and his membership in our UCI community, before we get to questions of "our nation," as Grant mentions, not make the event of his suicide perhaps more important, in terms of a public announcement and vigil? We were called upon to cope openly with the Virginia tragedy; is there no need to cope with the death of a fourth-year undergraduate who must have had human connections hereâ€”roommates, classmates, professors and friends? Or did the distance and sensationalism that marked the Virginia events call more for a public response than a largely unnoticed nighttime end to a UCI student&amp;#39;s life in a quiet stairwell?&#13;
&#13;
I believe that a community response to this young man&amp;#39;s death would do more to remind us of the pressures of university living, and to produce awareness of treatment options, than a response to a series of deaths thousands of miles away. Perhaps his family would benefit, as well. I do not know his name, and perhaps we should not. I mourn for him in some way, nevertheless, and in another way, I mourn for the loss of a memorial from his, our, communityâ€”a memorial that would have afforded us a moment to consider some of the values that Chancellor Drake sets out: respect, empathy, appreciation, or at the very least what Vice Chancellor GÃ³mez described at the vigil for others as "stunned sorrow and common grief." Perhaps these can be shown in silence, but can they be shown in ignorance?&#13;

In light of recent events, I am very disappointed in the administration&amp;#39;s lack of a response to its students. Boston University prides itself on being a close-knit community despite its large size, a community in which each person is fully supported. However, this is not being expressed.&#13;
&#13;
In the past, after tragedies, such as the fires near South Campus, BU students have been notified through email of the tragedy immediately and how the university is handling it. However, I sit by my computer three days after the Virginia Tech tragedy without an email. The only places I&amp;#39;ve been able to read about the tragedy on campus are The Daily Free Press and BU Today. My Residence Assistant even sent out an email giving us support and guidance. I need more than a publication to tell me that everything is okay. And while my RA showed that she cares, I need to feel like the university officials care, too, and that they are doing everything to ensure our safety. And I need to hear that directly from them.&#13;
&#13;
This massacre is one that has affected the nation; it is not a remote incident. We have been reminded time and again through similar tragedies that these events can happen anywhere.&#13;
&#13;
The students at Virginia Tech were not notified by the university after the first shooting took place in a dormitory. The shooter was able to send a video and his manifesto to NBC en route to the classroom building where he killed 30 people. Had the university taken more action, had it notified the students and faculty of the situation and had they placed the university on lockdown, the incident may have been prevented.&#13;
&#13;
If that is not compelling enough, perhaps the fact that a BU student threatened to go on a rampage at another college in Boston similar to the one at Virginia Tech is more reason for the university to send an email out to the students. The media knew of this incident before many BU students had even heard about it.&#13;
&#13;
In these times, BU&amp;#39;s administration needs to react. The students need a response assuring them that our campus is a safe one. We need assurance from the administration that everything is being done to protect us. We need to be aware of incidents like these so we can decide to what to do and so we can be more aware of our surroundings. It is up to university officials to be responsive and to let us know that they are there and that they care.&#13;

Adan Berkowitz&amp;#39;s disdain for the very media that gives him a voice is an alarmingly narrow-minded generalization. ("A campus in grief distracted by media attack," April 18, p. 9). While sensationalism is all too prevalent in certain segments of the press, to ignore examples of remarkable, in-depth coverage of the Virginia Tech massacre is equally egregious.&#13;
&#13;
Tragedies such as this are the rare moments in U.S. history when the country collectively holds its breath, anxiously waiting for the newest fact or detail to emerge. In these cases, we rely on reporters on the ground to ask tough questions and capture the horror and pain that sent shock waves around the world.&#13;
&#13;
It surprises me that amid the supposed "swarm" of reporters marauding like vultures on the Virginia Tech campus, Berkowitz failed to notice the intrepid coverage by the Roanoke Times, a local outlet that has the most comprehensive, to-the-minute coverage and became a virtual bible for out-of-town reporters. The paper currently features a moving tribute to the victims on its main web page.&#13;
&#13;
Berkowitz also curiously missed the fantastic USA Today coverage, and even his hometown Boston Globe made a fine showing.&#13;
&#13;
To be sure, the Talking Heads do have a way of obscuring issues and turning them into partisan talking points, and they certainly make a lot of noise. But they are hardly representative of the media as a whole, which, at least on this story, performed masterfully.&#13;

"The Changing Gun Debate," an article written by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg in response to the recent tragedy at Virginia Tech, can be found in the April 30 issue of Newsweek. I applaud his insight and his efforts; Mayor Bloomberg is leading an uphill battle against gun crime.&#13;
&#13;
For as long I can remember, the gun debate has been about special interests -- on both sides. Our political leaders remind us that they are concerned about guns in America and either passionately advocate or decry gun regulation.&#13;
&#13;
Our two parties are entrenched in this opposition. Sadly, this debate is far more about ideology and not at all about restoring the peace and safety of American homes, businesses and schools. Mayor Bloomberg proposes a middle ground that sidesteps the dogma of regulation. He intends to stop gun crime, and he is making measurable progress doing so. In the past six years, murders in New York City have dropped 40 percent.&#13;
&#13;
Specifically, Bloomberg wants to stop crime perpetrated with illegally purchased guns. Although the Virginia Tech shooter legally purchased his weapons, most criminals do not. Most criminals who use guns purchase them illegally. "FBI statistics show that violent crime is on the rise across America," writes Bloomberg, and the weapon of choice is an illegal gun.&#13;
&#13;
Unfortunately, our federal government is doing little to help the fight against illegal guns. In fact, Bloomberg says federal regulations prevent his police department and cities across the nation from using the resources they need to bust illegal gun dealers.&#13;
&#13;
"Statistics show that 1 percent of dealers sell more than half of all illegal guns," Bloomberg said. In order to stop the sale of these weapons and keep them out of the hand of criminals, Bloomberg started a coalition called Mayors Against Illegal Guns. Now, more than 200 cities participate, sharing information about the sale of illegal guns.&#13;
&#13;
Our national debate on guns must change. Following Bloomberg&amp;#39;s example, our Federal government should aggressively combat the sale of illegal guns in America. It should share the information that local and state law enforcement officials need to stop gun crime.&#13;
&#13;
Ultimately, a debate on gun crime cannot be one of ideology, but must be one of law enforcement. No matter how stringent or lenient the regulations our society places on legal gun ownership, the majority of criminals will still use illegal guns. Bloomberg supports law enforcement because he wants to stop gun crime.&#13;
&#13;
Our leaders should stop concerning themselves with whether or not an average American citizen should be able to own guns: Our Constitution explicitly provides for gun ownership. Instead, our leaders must stop gun crime. The only way to stop gun crime in America is unequivocal, uncompromising support of law enforcement from the federal government and its agencies.&#13;
&#13;
Let&amp;#39;s follow Bloomberg&amp;#39;s lead. With support for law enforcement, we can end the epidemic of gun crime in America.&#13;

To me, a college campus is one of the best places to be on earth. A university represents a lot of great things: youth and promise, for starters. A sense of community. A devotion to a life of the mind. Personal improvement. Ambition, dedication, discipline. All kinds of respect -- respect from students who want to learn, respect from professors who are honored to be able to share their knowledge, respect of colleagues and self-respect for a job well done. And above all, a love of knowledge, learning and teaching, with the idea that these things can improve the quality of life for everyone in the world.&#13;
&#13;
This is why what happened at Virginia Tech horrifies me so much. Any senseless loss of life, especially in such high numbers, is numbing and saddening. But the idea that this took place on a college campus -- especially with the shooter being a student -- is particularly difficult for me to wrap my mind around. Such a thing is in direct reproach to all the wonderful things that a university, one of the civilized world&amp;#39;s oldest and most respected institutions, stands for.&#13;
&#13;
This was the worst mass shooting in U.S. history, and it happened in a community devoted to higher learning. How does a university community -- teachers, students and staff alike -- begin to recover from such a horrific turn of events, especially because the betrayal came from within?&#13;
&#13;
There is already much criticism of the way the university handled itself during the crucial hours. But how much better could it have done it? How prepared could it have been for something like this? I&amp;#39;m certain that, had it happened here, Boston University would have not have fared much better.&#13;
&#13;
University administrators do think about student safety, but they are generally not thinking about their own students going on shooting rampages. And what a horrible precedent this has set. Clearly, now they will have to start thinking about it.&#13;
&#13;
I have a friend at Virginia Tech, and thankfully, she and her friends are safe. But I grieve for her, nonetheless, because of what her community will be going through in the days and months to come, particularly when the media coverage subsides and they are left to pick up the pieces on their own.&#13;
&#13;
Somebody on CNN said yesterday that because of these circumstances no matter what college we are affiliated with, "Today, we are all Hokies."&#13;
&#13;
My heart goes out to the friends and families of those who died, but my prayers belong to everyone affiliated with Virginia Tech. I believe that every university in the country should have its flag at half-mast tomorrow. This tragedy did not just happen to Virginia Tech. It happened to all of us, in this larger community devoted to everything that colleges and universities stand for.&#13;

Two weeks ago, I was shocked once again when a maniac took so many innocent lives at Virginia Tech. I focused on the many news events that followed this tragedy in my home state.&#13;
&#13;
I reflected on the campus, wrapped in such scenic beauty, where my many of my friends attended and later taught. Virginia Tech is a university in which many of my former students attended. It is also a university where my former students and I visited while teaching and performing music.&#13;
&#13;
As I continued to watch the television coverage throughout the week, I had many reflections and feelings, including shock, outrage and compassion.&#13;
Late last week, officials posted a letter written by the sister of the murderer. Her words touched me very much. I felt her pain and hurt for those who suffered at the hands of her brother. I perceived her words to be most sincere and heartfelt. In a week of such tragedy, this is the moment that produced my tears. I couldn&amp;#39;t help but think she didn&amp;#39;t have to write that letter. But she did.&#13;
&#13;
In the last ten years, I have had the opportunity to teach and perform music in South Korea on four occasions, most recently at Yonsei University in Seoul. During my first trip, I remember an older man looking me straight in the eyes and thanking me for the United States&amp;#39; intervention in his country years ago.&#13;
&#13;
I am very proud of the United States&amp;#39; involvement in the Korean War. South Korea is a beautiful country, a beautiful culture and a beautiful people. The Daily Free Press&amp;#39;s article ("After VT, Koreans prepare for backlash," April 25, p. 1) quite, and cited the Korean values of community support. I would like to add the values of courtesy and a great work ethic. At the end of the Korean War, South Korea was one of the poorest countries in the world. Today, South Korea has the eighth-highest gross national product wordwide.&#13;
&#13;
I read in a recent book by Lee Iacocca that of all international students recently rated in math and science, Korean students scored the highest.&#13;
&#13;
The Virginia Tech killer did not reflect Korean values. But his sister did.&#13;
&#13;
I also have been reflecting on many of the Korean students at Boston University whom I interact with on our campus. These students continually demonstrate an excellence with dignity and class.&#13;
&#13;
I was so pleased to see written in the article that there have been no backlash incidents reported among the BU community. I am proud of our BU community in this regard.&#13;
&#13;
It is understandable to regret when a tragedy has happened by persons from one&amp;#39;s own culture. I have felt this many times as a U.S. citizen. I have also felt pride in the United States. But I hope the readers of the Free Press will join me in answering Clara Pyo and all the students of the Korean Student Association.&#13;
&#13;
Yes, Pyo should celebrate, because her heritage, the heritage of South Korea, is still a proud heritage.&#13;

n In reaction to the Virginia Tech shootings, different advocacy groups are focusing on gun control and security as issues that should be addressed after this latest tragedy. While these are valid points, doesn&amp;#39;t the problem stem from mental-heath care?&#13;
&#13;
It is nearly impossible to get individuals into mental-health facilities after they turn 18 unless they commit themselves or have committed some act of violence against themselves or others. If the professor who had tried to get Cho Seung-Hui help had been able to get him committed to residential treatment (treatment that he had needed for years) this tragedy might have been prevented.&#13;
&#13;
Unfortunately, this young man was too far gone to acknowledge his need for treatment, and his behavior went unchecked.&#13;

The Daily Free Press&amp;#39;s editorial sounded like it was taken straight from the NBC anchor&amp;#39;s monologue, complete with the required clichÃ©s of "difficult decision" and "responsibility to tell the story," ("Airing murderous motives," April 19, p. 11).&#13;
&#13;
It gave NBC every benefit in assuming its goal here is to selflessly provide "the story."&#13;
&#13;
"Before even thinking about putting the information on the air, NBC contacted the FBI."&#13;
&#13;
This sounds great, and it was very humble of NBC to do that, but was it true? It seems to me the more likely timeline was to first make copies of everything, contact the FBI and finally slap the NBC logo on each frame before starting the round-the-clock replays.&#13;
&#13;
A more interesting analysis for the editorial could have been to walk through that journalistic decision making process: Does a mass media outlet weigh the good or bad that might come from their exploitation of a situation?&#13;
&#13;
I can easily think of many bad outcomes from this such as additional psychological damage to the victims and their families and the obvious danger of inspiring the next mass murder out there.&#13;
&#13;
The editorial said Cho Seung-Hui copied previous killers, so it acknowledges that there is a real danger. Perhaps his words are being written into some other loner kid&amp;#39;s notebook right now.&#13;
&#13;
The editorial does, however, dismiss this danger: "These threats will surface regardless of whether the media provides all the information or not." This is a weak justification (might as well make drugs legal, people will do them anyway). That excuse is also an attempt to remove the mighty responsibility which comes with the journalism profession.&#13;
&#13;
As far as the good from showing the video, I can&amp;#39;t think of anything beyond profiting from human misery. Does anyone feel better knowing the final thoughts of a killer, or seeing what must have been the last thing all of those innocent people at Virginia Tech saw before they were killed?&#13;
&#13;
Please let me know what benefit we receive from the telling the killer&amp;#39;s story that could not have been conveyed in a summary paragraph of what he sent. Think about the difference between reporting on the package (we received a package with a video which show the killer felt alone, picked on, angry at the rich etc.) compared to fulfilling the last wish of that cold-blooded killer and giving out every word of his manifesto.&#13;
&#13;
Which has a greater chance of inspiring some other unstable person out that? Who knows which sentence or image will be latched on to?&#13;
&#13;
There is such a thing is right and wrong in the world, and in this case, NBC was wrong.&#13;
&#13;
