Virginia Tech students finish up tragic semester

Wednesday was the last day of classes for Virginia Tech students, and students said taking exams is tough while coping with the tragedy.
Charlotte Savercool, a freshman at Virginia Tech, said all the hallways of her dorm are almost empty, as most students did not take exams.
"The teachers have been really supportive," Savercool said. "They let us choose if we want to keep our same grade or finish certain assignments."
She said the teachers won't grade anything that hurts your average.
Laura Gill, a senior, said most teachers have assigned group projects so all the work doesn't fall on one student.
"None of us can imagine sitting down and studying for an exam," Gill said. "It's too much for anybody."
Gill said walking into the classroom on the first day back on April 23 after the shooting was the hardest part.
She said she kept thinking about the shooting - about how the victims thought it would be a normal day.
"Once I was in class, I'd relax a bit, but changing buildings was really rough for me," Gill said. "My heart would start racing, and then I would calm down and realize it wouldn't happen again."
Junior Chris Barrett said classes were the most full on the first day back except for exam days in previous years.
He said teachers talked about what happened in each class.
Savercool said teachers would let students voice their opinions but she has gotten tired of talking about the tragedy.
"After the second and third classes, I didn't want to talk about it anymore," Savercool said.
She said the shooting has been hard to deal with, and she cannot bring herself to watch the video the shooter left behind.
Savercool said she realized the shooting's impact when she looked on the Internet and heard from other students it was the largest school shooting ever.
"The best way for me to deal with it is to see the memorials and not watch the news," Savercool said.
Gill said the reality of what happened hit her when she went home after the shooting.
"It was really hard to come back into (class)," Gill said. "The memories came rushing back. We're in a bubble here and no one understands until they come here."
Gill said it's better when she's with people and hardest when she's alone.
She said she and her friends have been having nightmares about the shooter.
"I see images of him holding the guns, and I watched the video, which I think was a really stupid idea," she said.
Everyone is trying to get back to normal, Gill said, but no one can get it off their minds.
Barrett said the campus seems more empty since the media left.
"For a while it seemed like people were pretty sad, but they seem to be doing OK," Barrett said. "A lot of people are finally getting out of here."
Gill said the campus looks like one big memorial, and the university received a lot of support from other colleges.
She said orange and maroon ribbons and signs reading, "We will prevail" hang all over the place.
Savercool said the Hershey Company made free orange and maroon Kissables candies for students.
"It's stuff like that," Savercool said. "The support is so much more comforting. It's negative when we still talk about the killer."
Savercool said before the shooting she didn't think she'd be sad to leave, but now she doesn't want to go home to Maryland for the summer.
She said students at Virginia Tech have bonded and are in the same boat.
"My friends at home won't understand when I get sad one day," Savercool said. "They'll never understand and they never will."
Gill said the community has grown a lot closer. She said the campus has always been happy, but people are now even more friendly.
"Everyone here is your friend," Gill said. "Down at the bars, we're making so many more friends because everyone is closer."
Gill said she's staying at school this summer and thinks it will be interesting to see how the university cleans up campus while paying respect to the tragedy.
She said Norris Hall, where the shootings occurred, will remain closed for the time being. The building's future is being debated.
Barrett said he's also staying for the summer.
"I love it here," Barrett said. "I'm taking classes all summer here so I'm not ever leaving."

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The first day back to class for Virginia Tech students began with a morning ceremony honoring the 32 students and faculty killed by senior English major Seung-Hui Cho.
Thirty-two white balloons were released with the strike of a bell in front of 33 small stones placed in a semi-circle on the wide expanse of the field known as the Drillfield.
The 33rd marker, placed between Matthew Gwaltney's and Dan O'Neil's, was for Cho, who killed himself at the end of his rampage; it was removed later Monday.
There still is a sizable showing of flowers and notes in the place where his stone lay.
"He was still a person, too," junior Matthew Quinn said. "He was still a Hokie."
In this community of more than 25,000 students, there are signs of forgiveness toward the gunman, but it is not a consensus.
There were not many on campus willing to talk to the media Monday, and while the campus population spiked from last week, it was far from a normal spring day.
"There are a lot of students back, but this is pretty sparse," graduate student Amy Tanner said. "I think it will be just a slow, long week."
Instructors received e-mails from the Va. Tech administration encouraging them to mention last week's events in their classes.
Ting Cai, a graduate student, is teaching a general chemistry class today and said he cannot predict how many of his students will attend.
"We're only going to meet for 15 minutes," he said. "I think I'll probably start with a moment of silence."
Teachers are using Monday and Tuesday to assess the grades and conditions of their students before finishing the semester.
Exams are optional in calculating students' final grades.
Andrew Blando, a junior oceanic engineer, said he still is debating the different options.
"I don't want to feel like I'm taking advantage of the situation," he said.
The students remaining on campus Monday were searching for normalcy.
Many students experienced abbreviated classes along with reminders of the last week, such as signs on the outside of all academic and residence halls curtailing the media's presence.
"I know in my first class there was quite a bit of awkward silence," Quinn said. "Being able to go back to class helps, though."
The somber atmosphere is punctuated by requests for media interviews, many of which were turned down, although Quinn acknowledged the importance of broadcasting information.
He said he just found out Sunday that he knew one of the victims when he saw her picture on CNN.
"I was just in shock for, like, five minutes," he said.
Authorities have named Cho the gunman in one of two university shootings last Monday.
The first incident occurred about 7 a.m. at the West Ambler Johnston Residence Hall, where a resident adviser and a female student were shot.
Police have identified Cho as the gunman in the second shooting two hours later that left 30 people dead at Norris Hall, an academic building. Cho then committed suicide. One of the guns used in the second shooting also was used in the first.
There is a heavy police presence on campus as the investigation continues.
Campus tours resumed Monday, although guides had to detour to avoid the police tape surrounding Norris Hall.
"This is a great school," was repeated to prospective students and their parents by professors and current students.
And the decreased numbers in the student body this week might not indicate next semester's trend.
"I don't know many people who weren't coming back," Blando said.
For the Blacksburg community, it will be a long time before they can walk through campus without thinking about the 33 dead students and faculty.
"It's always going to be in the recesses of my mind," Blando said.

BLACKSBURG, Va., November 14, 2007 -- A "Hokies Thank The World" event will take place Saturday, Nov. 17, from 10:35 to 11:12 a.m. at the Virginia Tech Drillfield in Blacksburg., rain or shine.
The event will bring together thousands of students, faculty, staff, and friends to spell out a message of thanks to the world for the global outpouring of support for the Virginia Tech community following the events of April 16. The message of thanks will be recorded by ground, aerial, and satellite imagery and will be shared with the world at <a href="http://www.hokiesthanktheworld.org/">Hokies Thank the World</a> website.
The community-wide effort to thank the world is open to all who wish to participate. In the event of cloud cover, the satellite imagery may not be collected, but aerial imagery will be collected as scheduled. Participants are asked to wear orange or maroon (not required), arrive by 10:35 a.m., and visit the check-in tent on the Virginia Tech Drillfield.
The Hokies Thank The World event takes place on the Saturday morning of the Virginia Tech vs. Miami football game in Blacksburg. The Hokies and Hurricanes kick-of at 3:30 p.m., in a game that will be televised by ABC. Aerial imagery from the event will be premiered in Lane Stadium during the football game.
"The world came together for the Virginia Tech community and the Hokies Thank The World event provides a way to send out a message of thanks and love to all of the world," said Peter Sforza, VirginiaView coordinator and coordinator of the event and faculty member in the <a href="http://www.geography.vt.edu/">Department of Geography</a> in the <a href="http://www.cnr.vt.edu/">College of Natural Resources</a> at Virginia Tech. VirginiaView is a statewide remote sensing consortium that promotes innovative applications of satellite imagery.
A diverse and talented team of students, faculty, staff, community members, and non-profit and commercial organizations have volunteered time and resources to assist in the planning and production of the event.
The Virginia Tech <a href="http://www.sga.vt.edu/">Student Government Association</a> is sponsoring a media campaign on campus during the week of the event, including posters, flyers, table cards, a display in Squire Student Center, and a Facebook event.
The pilots for the aerial operations include a Virginia Tech professor using his personal helicopter and a Virginia Tech alumnus in a Hokie Flying Club airplane.
A bucket truck for field level photography will be provided by Mills Associated Arborists, a Blacksburg-based tree care company.
Videography and post-production assistance is being provided by HorseArcher Productions, the Blacksburg-based company best known for their production of Hokie Nation.
Event photography is being provided by Ivan "Russian Hokie" Morozov, Ty Brady, 16 Blocks Magazine, and Michael Kiernan from Virginia Tech's University Relations.
Virginia Tech's <a href="http://www.cgit.vt.edu/">Center for Geospatial Information Technology</a> (CGIT) has volunteered time and technology to help make this event a success. CGIT researchers have assisted with determining the accurate geospatial coordinates of the "VT Thanks You"' message on the Drillfield. "It is such a wonderful initiative that we felt compelled to help in any way we could," said Randy Dymond, CGIT co-director and associate professor of civil and environmental engineering.
The Department of Geography is the university sponsor for the event and will provide expertise and resources for the processing of the aerial and satellite imagery. A geospatial team made up of geographers, foresters, and engineers will work immediately following the event to process and release the imagery to the public. The processing of the helicopter and airplane photos includes georectification, which assigns spatial coordinates to the imagery and allows use with mapping and geographical information systems (GIS). The geospatial team will release the finished aerial imagery to the public as Google Earth KML files along with standard image formats.
The IKONOS satellite is operated by GeoEye, a Dulles, Va., based remote sensing company. The imagery will not be immediately available, but will be released as soon as it is transmitted back to earth and processed by GeoEye and then the Virginia Tech geospatial team. The exact timing of the satellite imagery release depends on the downlink location for the IKONOS imagery and is expected to be available by Thanksgiving day.

Hokies United sponsored a candlelight vigil Monday night for the Virginia Tech community so that students and residents of Blacksburg could pay their respects to the fallen Northern Illinois University Huskies.
The twenty minute service began with Hokies United member Scott Cheatham thanking everyone for coming out to show their support for the Huskies. Cheatham introduced President Charles Steger who gave a brief speech. Followed by Steger was Student Government Association President Adeel Khan. Khan spoke of uniting with the Huskies and the unfortunate fact that Virginia Tech and NIU now share a common bond. "We will all prevail," Khan said in his closing remarks.
After a moment of silence for the fallen Huskies, Steger suggested a singing of "Amazing Grace," in which the entire crowd sang. Following "Amazing Grace," the crowd started the well known chant, "Lets Go Hokies!" with Hokies being replaced with Huskies. "Our support for the Huskies is unlike that of any other school because we understand personally what it feels like. The vigil not only represented the fallen Huskies but also our own friends we lost last spring," said sophomore chemistry major Julianne Webber.
Folded boards were placed around College Avenue, resembling those that were on the drill field last spring; although this time they were for the NIU Huskies. Students signed the boards with messages of support and grief for the Huskies. One message read, "You are in our thoughts and prayers, stay strong Huskies."
Last Thursday, Feb. 14, Northern Illinois University was shook by the same shock and grief Virginia Tech experienced less than a year ago. Twenty seven year-old graduate student, Steven Kazmierczak, stormed a geology classroom, holding a shotgun and two handguns. 162 students were registered in the class; five were killed while injuring 18 more.
Instantly, the Virginia Tech community responded with an outpouring of support through multiple mediums. President Steger sent out a campus wide email alerting students of his contact with the NIU president as well as counseling contact information for anyone that felt the need for it. Organizations across campus showed their support for the NIU Huskies. Alpha Phi Omega, a national service fraternity on campus, made cards for their fellow chapter at the NIU campus. Pi Kappa Alpha, who lost one of its brothers at NIU, is sending the NIU chapter a flag with all the Virginia Tech brother's signatures.
The Hokies continued support of the NIU Huskies has been recognized nationally because of the bond both schools now share. The Hokies United candlelight vigil was just one way the Virginia Tech community expressed their support for NIU.

The deadliest campus shooting in the history of the US occurred on Monday, April 16 at Virginia Tech. The tragic shootings at Virginia Tech happened on the day Jews all over the world observe Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, and which is marked in Israel with two minutes of silence, prayer and reflection.
The United States Congress has called for a minute of silence on Friday, April 20 at noon, to remember Monday's victims, as well as the millions of other men and women around the world who have died at the hands of armed madmen and criminals.
Seung-Hui Cho killed 32 people and injured 29 more before taking his own life.
Ironically, one of the Virginia Tech victims, aeronautics professor Liviu Librescu, was a survivor of the Holocaust. He died while barricading his classroom against the gunman, saving the lives of several of his students through his sacrifice on Yom Hashoah.
Librescu, born in 1930 in Ploiesti, Romania, survived the Holocaust in the ghetto of Focsani while his father was interned in the Transnistria labor camp. After the war, he studied Aerospace Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Bucharest and Fluid Mechanics at the Academia de Stiinte din Romania.
He distinguished himself as a researcher at the Institute of Applied Mechanics, Institute of Fluid Mechanics and Institute of Fluid Mechanics and Aerospace Constructions of Academy of Science of Romania. However, then Romanian President Nicolae Ceausescu did not allow him to emigrate to Israel, however, until Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin personally intervened on Prof. Librescu's behalf in 1978.
After making aliyah, Librescu served as a Professor of Aeronautical and Mechanical Engineering at Tel-Aviv University. In 1985, he joined the faculty at Virginia Tech where he distinguished himself as the Virginia Tech professor with the greatest number of publications.
At age 76, Professor Librescu held the door of his classroom shut so that Cho Seung-hui could not enter before his students escaped through the windows. Cho shot Liviu Librescu through the door mortally wounding this Professor considered a hero by his students.
Professor Librescu was <a href="http://www.pjvoice.com/v23/23001vatech.aspx">commended posthumously</a> by the President of Romania with the Star of Romania Order in the grade of Great Cross, "as a token of high appreciation for the entire scientific and universitarian activity, as well as for his heroic acts during the tragic events of April 16th 2007 in the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University campus, when professor Librescu saved his students' lives at the cost of his own".
Rabbi Yossel Kranz announced that the new Chabad House at Virginia Tech will be named for Professor Liviu Librescu. "Professor Librescu's final act of heroism will be eternally memorialized in the life-affirming activities of the new center," said Rabbi Kranz. The professor's widow Mrs. Marilena Librescu and their sons Ari and Joe shared with Rabbi Kranz their wishes that Librescu House serve as a home of healing, joy and spiritual fulfillment to Virginia Tech's Jewish students.

In the wake of yesterday's tragedy, many University students felt unable to help their peers at Virginia Tech. Within seven hours of the shootings, however, plans were under way for programs to reach out to the Tech community.
Fourth-year College student Raleigh Anne Blank took steps to create a group called Hoos For Hokies, an umbrella organization that will help direct different programs to provide aid to Virginia Tech in the following weeks.
"It's a group that's supposed to be a central contact point for people to know about events that are going on," Blank said. The group will also keep students updated on how they can "help University students who were affected and Tech students who were affected."
Blank, who also helped begin the Katrina Aid and Relief Effort last August, said Hoos for Hokies was created in much the same way, by establishing an account with Alumni Hall and pooling together resources with interested students and Student Council.
Students will be able to donate to Hoos for Hokies during events to be held at the University through the next few weeks. . Representatives were present at the vigil held last night in the Amphitheater. According to Blank, Hoos for Hokies raised "a lot of money" at the vigil and has started receiving donations online as well.
Although Hoos for Hokies and Student Council are keeping in touch with Virginia Tech, Blank said she does not know for certain what the money raised will go toward, adding that already "having an arm to move for fundraising [through Hoos for Hokies] will make it happen pretty quickly."
"All of the money will go to Virginia Tech," fourth-year College student Elizabeth Chu said. "We're trying to be as least intrusive as possible and following with whatever Virginia Tech needs for the moment."According to Chu, Virginia Tech's student council president expressed a need for 30,000 candles, and Hoos for Hokies helped find candles and arranged for them to be sent to Blacksburg.
Chu is also organizing a "love letter writing campaign" to be held Thursday, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Pavilion III, during which University students will be able to write letters to the families of the victims.
"This is the most personal way for U.Va. students to express ... how saddened we are [and] how horrified we are with what happened," Chu said.

I grew up in Blacksburg. My dad is a Va. Tech alum. Although i have not lived there for years I still consider Blacksburg my hometown. I am stunned by today's tragedy. Simply stunned.

Wednesday night, students and faculty gathered by the Fence. In the midst of the cold and windy weather, 70 hands cupped 70 flickering flames as the Carnegie Mellon community mourned the victims of the Virginia Tech massacre.
Last Monday, 23-year-old Virginia Tech student Seung-Hui Cho killed himself and 32 others in the deadliest shooting executed by a single person in United States history. The attacks occurred in a dormitory and an academic building, both located on the Virginia Tech campus.
The vigil by the Fence is only one example of the ways in which colleges and universities nationwide are coming together to honor those slain.
"Students totally took the lead on creating this opportunity to express themselves after the Virginia Tech shootings," said Jonathan Kroll, housefellow for Morewood Gardens. "I think it definitely helps with the grieving process."
The vigil began at 9 p.m. with a moment of silence. As the group grew in number, participants continued to light the candles of those who gathered along the periphery of the crowd.
Student Body President Karl Sjogren passed out lyrics to to "Lean on Me" and the group then joined in song. After that, students and faculty members, one of whom was an alumna of Virginia Tech, took turns speaking informally.
Two hours earlier, the Hillel Jewish University Center (JUC) of Pittsburgh hosted a vigil led by rabbi Jamie Gibson of Temple Sinai.
Gibson led those attending in song and prayer, and students read prayers as well. During the vigil, Gibson gave personal attention to each of the departed.
"We knew that we wanted to read the names of every single person whose name had been released," said Sahar Oz, the JUC's assistant director. "And we also wanted to say a few things about them."
Students lit candles for each of the known victims: Liviu Librescu, a 76-year-old Holocaust survivor; Reema Samaha, an 18-year-old first-year; Kevin Granata, a biomechanics researcher and a leader in his field; and 26 others.
The group also lit three candles for the victims whose names had not yet been released.
Oz found Librescu's death particularly troubling. Librescu, a professor at Virginia Tech, was shot while protecting his students by guarding the entrance to his classroom.
"He was murdered on Holocaust Remembrance Day, which is an occasion observed around the world," Oz said. "It sent shock and a tremendous sense of loss to the Jewish community."
The tragedy resonated in particular with several Carnegie Mellon students in the JUC who met Virginia Tech students last May while on a Birthright trip to Israel.
"One of the things we did immediately was try to reach the eight students who went on this trip from Virginia Tech," Oz said. All eight were unharmed.
"We had that added element of emotional proximity," Oz said.
The modern languages department is also making plans to reach out to Virginia Tech, in part because so many of the shootings took place in foreign-language classrooms.
"We feel closer," said Sono Hayes-Takano, a Japanese professor.
"We've been brainstorming," Hayes-Takano said. "People in MLSAC, [Modern Languages Student Advisory Committee], they're thinking about raising money for [the victims'] memorial fund."
Beyond the campus community, the Internet has helped many feel connected to the Virginia Tech victims.
"I think the Internet in this case has been a tremendous asset," Oz said. "I think Facebook is a great example."
Profiles of victims on Facebook, in addition to those on news sites such as CNN and BBC News, have helped humanize the tragedy.
"We don't want these victims to become statistics," Oz said. "Keep it personal."
But with such accessibility, fear is often not too far behind.
"There is this sense of, 'It could happen to me,' " Oz said.
Students feeling vulnerable might benefit from becoming familiar with Carnegie Mellon's security policy.
"We have trained a certain number of people ... in every building," said Madelyn Miller, director of Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) at the university.
RAs, building marshals, and other qualified individuals are among those who have received training, she said.
EH&S has had a system called AlertNow in place for the past couple of years. AlertNow enables EH&S to make 5000 phone calls in about a minute, which could help alert floor marshals of a campus emergency.
"Not everybody knows that we have these procedures in place," Miller said.
In the past, EH&S's procedures were kept online behind a firewall. The procedures were privatized because they included the cell phone numbers of various staff members, in addition to the locations of hazardous materials throughout campus.
After Virginia Tech, EH&S decided to make the procedures available to the public — without the information regarding cell phones or hazardous materials.
Carnegie Mellon's urban campus is an asset in the event of an emergency, Miller said. The university is within close reach of city, county, and state police.
"I think it makes us safer," she said.
Moreover, RAs are trained to recognize suspicious students, which could help prevent a future incident, Kroll said. Concern from other students is often cause for immediate action.
"Undoubtedly, we take that very seriously," he said.
