Contributor An entity responsible for making contributions to the resource Na Mi Creator An entity primarily responsible for making the resource 见习记者 吴晓鹏 Date A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource 2007-07-19 Description An account of the resource 2007年04月19日10:48 21世纪经济报道 4月16日，美国东海岸Blacksburg小镇宁静的早晨。9点钟，弗吉尼亚理工学院教学楼204室，一个白发苍苍的老教授正从文件夹里拿出教学资料，下面坐着大约20多名学生。 　　突然，"梆、梆、梆"，巨大的声响响彻小镇的上空。205室的计算机科学专业的中国籍博士生程海燕听到了这一切。 　　程不知道这声音从何处来，但她可以确认，声源离他们很近。 　　"这声音停止了5-10秒，我们都以为是建筑施工的声音。我刚正准备讲下一个主题，那声音又响了起来。"程海燕在给记者的一封名为my story(我的故事)的邮件里说，这声音至少响了有20下。 　　坐在离门很近的学生Teresa就和程海燕一起出去看到底发生了什么。外面并没有人，2秒钟后，左边的208教室出来了一个方形脸穿黑色衣服的家伙。"最让人吃惊的是他手里竟然还握着一把黑色手枪。" 　　程海燕和Teresa转身冲回教室，这时，"梆！"，背后的枪响了。 　　"一颗子弹却从我们右耳边飞了过去，我的耳朵也被这枪响给震伤了。" 　　程海燕大声叫喊，让教室里的每一个人立刻蹲下。4个学生马上把讲台旁边的大桌子搬了过去，把门堵上。他们在地上躺着，抵住桌脚。 　　教室没有窗户。那枪手就在教室外开枪了，射击持续1分钟后，他开始推门，但被里面的学生给顶住了。教室后面躲在课桌下面的两个学生用手机打911报了警，当时有11个人在205教室。 　　枪手继续开枪，子弹打穿了门，木头和金属片到处乱飞。他又试着推了几次，依然没有成功，就朝其他的地方开枪。 　　"梆、梆、梆"，枪声一直在持续，"我唯一能做的就是在那里跪着，祈祷上帝&#39;制止他吧，制止枪手，求您了&#39;。"程海燕躲在讲台后面，近乎绝望地做着祈祷。 　　始终没能推开门的枪手终于离去了。枪声越来越远，但并没有停止，至少又响了30-40下。"太恐怖了。我们一直等一直等......外面传来几声不清晰的叫喊，只听有人在叫：&#39;把手伸过来，把手伸过来&#39;。" 　　这时，尖厉的警笛声传来，枪声也终于停了下来。赶来的警察冲进了教室，在警员们的带领下，程海燕和同学们排成一排跑了出去。她再也顾不上看看其他教室怎么样了。 　　这时，她还不知道，一个小时前看到的204室里的那位白发苍苍的老教授和他的很多学生已经离开人世。 　　跑在她后面的Lisa惊魂未定，她突然哭了出来，程握紧她的手，一起跑开了。 　　"千万别是中国人" 　　离开教学楼后，仍在惊恐之中的程海燕做的第一件事，是借邻居的电脑给丈夫和她的研究团队发邮件，"告诉他们我没事了"。 　　世界各大媒体的记者很快赶到了现场，中国的通讯社也向本国发回报道："没有中国人伤亡。"中国民众和在美的华人松了一口气。 　　但过了没几个小时，他们的心又提到了嗓子眼上。 　　美国FOX电视台发了一张照片，一个亚裔模样的人在草地上被警察制服了，CNN随后也用这张照片作为片头放了出来。 　　这引起了人们的无限联想，《芝加哥太阳时报》随后引用匿名的校方消息源说，枪击案的凶手是去年8月在上海拿到签证后来到美国的中国留学生。 　　该消息迅速在网络上流窜，从美国的校园BBS传到了中国的门户网站。 　　"听人说发生校园枪击时很惊讶。后来说死了30多人，更惊讶。再后来听说(凶手)是亚裔，心就悬到了半空中，很怕真的是中国人。"密苏里大学新闻系研究生李由描述他听到消息时反应时说。 　　"如果凶手是中国人就麻烦了，那样会有很多负面影响，"弗吉尼亚理工学院另一位研究生夏晓(音译)说，"如果是那样，中国学生在这儿的处境有可能变得困难。大家都担心可能会发生排华现象，而且以后美国学校有可能变得不倾向于招收中国学生，中国学生的签证也可能更难获得。" 　　在中国国内，上海外国语大学的本科学生们都觉得有些冤，"真倒霉，为什么是中国人，害得我们这些人好惨！"一位学生的MSN签名栏这样写道。 　　该校学生郑博宏解释说："一方面，我们对此将信将疑，从感情上不愿相信，而求证于其他报道。而由于我身边人群具有一定的特殊性，不少人希望出国，因而担心因此事影响自己前途。" 　　网民在门户网站上的积极留言，也反映了全球华人不同程度的情绪——恐惧，愤慨，还有疑惑。而这种情绪最少的，反而是处于暴风中心的弗吉尼亚理工学院的中国留学生们。 　　"当有传闻说是中国人的时候，我们都不相信，"理工学院化学系博士侯严鹏(音译)对记者说："一是那个人能买到枪，二是射击技巧很熟练，中间还装了一次子弹，中国学生一般不会有这样的技术的。" 　　但未经证实的消息还是给夏晓带来了很多麻烦。国内亲朋好友的电话一个接一个，她只好挨个向他们解释："枪手肯定不会是中国人。"当记者提出电话采访时，她也要求在网上聊，"因为电话随时都有人可能会打过来"。 　　经济系的研究生潘铮铮和他们的意见也很一致，"一开始说是亚裔的时候，我们就猜测是韩国人，中国人哪有那么大胆子做这样的事？而韩国人是要服兵役的，一个人打死那么多人，枪法很准，基本上都是暴头的，这也说明韩国人的可能性最大。" 　　潘还说，FOX电视台里那张照片中被抓的确实是一个中国人，但他并不是凶手，只是要闯进现场去拍照的学生记者。 　　人们还找到了两个博客，均属于一个名叫江伟恩的中国人。但后来这个人出面在博客上声明他不是凶手。 　　"我们现在不太敢出门" 　　对于许多人来说，那是一个不眠之夜，身在外地实习的弗吉尼亚理工学院中国籍学生左剑因为远离校园，凌晨2点还在看电视关于枪击案的报道。凶手到底是哪国人，成了人们关注的焦点。彻夜未眠的人们在等待着天亮，等待着枪手身份的公布。 　　4月17日上午9点，学校再次召开新闻发布会，表示凶手是23岁的韩国人Cho Seung-Hui，他是弗吉尼亚工学院英语专业四年级本科生。 　　时隔24小时，凶手身份的悬疑终于揭开。左剑第一时间表达了他对《芝加哥太阳时报》的愤怒，"它把没有经过核实的东西就登出来了，当凶手公布出来是韩国人后，很多人都发邮件去骂它，我们还准备捐钱起诉它。" 　　"一颗心终于落地了！"是另外一位中国留学生对凶手身份确定这一消息的反馈，她说在北美留学生的BBS上，这是大家的一致反应。 　　前述上海外国语大学的本科生MSN签名很快换成了："不是中国人。谢天谢地，希望再也不要发生这种事。" 　　在很多人看来，恐慌与担忧瞬间从中国人头上转移到了韩国人。 　　"我有一些韩国朋友，他们吓得不行了，得知是韩国人之后，他们只是一直说，&#39;怎么会呢，不可能的&#39;。"潘铮铮说。 　　事情已经发生了整整一天了，潘的韩国朋友们还处在"不敢相信，无法理解"的状态之中，他们拒绝了记者的采访申请。 　　而夏晓则表示，韩国的社团都纷纷发出声明，表示不认识Cho Seung-Hui这个人。新民网引述韩国首尔民众的话说一些弗吉尼亚的韩国人将搬离该镇。 　　对于更多的亚裔人来说，他们开始显得谨慎了，"我们现在不太敢出门......毕竟对美国人来说，东方面孔就是Asian，他们并分不清是韩国中国日本啊"，夏晓说。 　　芝加哥总领馆及中国学生学者联谊会17日下午在致当地华人学生的邮件中说：弗吉尼亚理工学院的惨案以及激起了全国范围内悲伤与愤怒的情绪。虽然现已证实凶手是韩国人而非中国人，总领馆和联谊会依然要提醒各位对自身安全要保持谨慎态度。 　　"因为对非亚裔人来说，他们并不能很好的区分各个族群，可能有人会把他们的愤怒发泄在亚洲人身上并采取一些暴力行为。所以请大家采取好保护措施，比如说呆在家或者是不要加入一些聚众的活动。" 　　对于可能引发的种族歧视担忧，弗吉尼亚州州长凯恩17日表示，枪案仅仅是个别案件，不会引发对亚裔学生的歧视，弗吉尼亚州立理工学院会继续对外籍学生开放。 　　据弗吉尼亚理工大学校园网显示，去年该校新招收21937名大学本科生、4000名以上研究生。校中学生来自35个国家，有26%的学生来自海外，他们每年的学费接近1.8万美元。由于该校以理工闻名，又是学费相对比较便宜的公立学校，因此对中国学生很有吸引力。 　　来自明尼苏达州的密苏里大学的研究生Anne Salazar在接受记者采访时表示："对于我自己来说，我不会因此而改变对亚洲族群的看法。至于我的朋友，我们谈论更多的不是怎么看待某个族群人的问题，而是可能更担心我们周围的人们，对身边的人保持警惕，睁大眼睛。" 　　"大学里平时各个国家的人相处比较融洽。这次的事件只是个人的行为，我觉得对整个 　　社区的想法和思维方式不会产生太大的影响。"理工大学中国学生学者联谊会主席薛宏说。 　　教育学者熊丙奇也注意到了在这24小时里人们的心理变化过程，"在潜意识里把罪犯和他的种族和区域联系在一起，然后给某一个区域的人贴标签，对一个种族的人产生偏见，这种思维方式只会导致矛盾的进一步激化，造成更大的祸端，引起种族冲突或者是文化冲突。" -- Original Source:21世纪经济报道 <a href="http://news.sina.com.cn/w/2007-04-19/104812817438.shtml">http://news.sina.com.cn/w/2007-04-19/104812817438.shtml<a/> Language A language of the resource zh-Hans Title A name given to the resource 美国弗吉尼亚大学惊魂：枪声里的中国人 中国学生学者�谊会 《�加哥太阳时报》 枪声里的中国人 程海燕 �加哥总领馆 Document A resource containing textual data. She asked me if I would be willing to release any articles that The California Aggie had written on the school&#39;s tragedy in April to be part of a larger database that is working to preserve and present stories from around the country. When I read the e-mail, it quickly reminded me of that terrible day on Apr. 16, when a lone student went on a shooting rampage on the Virginia Tech campus leaving 33 people dead, 25 injured and scores more scarred for life. College campuses across the country, including UC Davis, began reviewing and reevaluating their emergency response services in the case a similar attack should happen. Schools were no longer safe and seemingly anyone was capable of committing such a horrific act. Eventually, though, these thoughts became memories. Students here at UC Davis were able to continue to attend class, eat at the Coho and play intramural sports without worry. Of course, that&#39;s how it should be, and not just here, but everywhere. We should never have to live in a world of constant fear and trepidation, and should instead strive to live our lives as normally as possible. However, it is clear that normalcy is a status that many students in Blacksburg, Va. understandably continue to seek. Virginia Tech is not so different from UC Davis. It is a public institution with an undergraduate population of nearly 22,000. Blacksburg, like Davis, is also dominated largely by the local university. The population of the town is nearly 40,000 citizens, 60 percent of which is college students. Compare that to Davis, with a population around 60,000, about 50 percent of which is comprised of students. If you think that it can&#39;t happen here in quiet Davis, you are sorely mistaken. That being said, however, this is not a column trying to scare the population here on campus or the city at large that an attack is imminent. Instead, it is to serve as a reminder of how fortunate we are that we have been able to avoid a tragedy of such magnitude, and how easily we can undervalue every day that we walk on campus. In addition, we should not forget our brethren in Virginia. While many of us may not know any students over in Blacksburg personally, we can nonetheless imagine the pain and shock they continue to go through and the ongoing healing process. Last week the first football practice of the season for the Virginia Tech football team took place. The Hokies are the pride of Blacksburg and will once again be a top-25 team. But much more importantly, on that first game of the season when the team runs out of the tunnel and onto the field, the cheering students and fans can remember what it is to be normal again - for at least four quarters of football. Around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, local authorities received reports of an individual in the possession of some sort of weapon - possibly a rifle - in Westwood&#39;s North Village. The reports sent a swarm of Los Angeles Police Department cruisers to the North Village. Cars blocked several streets in an attempt to control traffic and prevent individuals from walking into potentially dangerous areas. About three blocks away, UCLA continued to go about its business as if there were not a care in the world. In the wake of the Virginia Tech shootings, it is remarkable - and unacceptable - that any immediate danger to the UCLA community was not communicated promptly to the entire campus. Given the recent announcements and assurances made by UCLA officials regarding campus safety, it is natural to think the university would have a short-term plan in place to deal with emergencies until a more comprehensive plan were in effect. Thankfully, the individual was not in possession of a rifle, but rather a crossbow, and no one was injured. But the situation could have been very different - and more dangerous - based on the initial reports. In a recent public meeting, Acting Chancellor Norman Abrams addressed how UCPD has been prepared for active-shooter situations since the 1999 Columbine shootings, so we know the police do have a plan in place. Of course, it is not expected that at the slightest hint of danger UCLA would break out megaphones, sound alarms and call in the National Guard. But to leave the community completely in the dark until more than an hour after the incident is over is simply unacceptable, and the university should be working more vigorously with UCPD to develop a response plan for reports of danger in and around UCLA. As it was, many students, faculty and staff were left completely unaware of the situation unless they were at a computer to check either the UCPD or the Daily Bruin Web site for breaking news updates. By the end of the day, the only notification of the incident sent to any members of the UCLA community came in the form of an e-mail by K.C. Kainsinger, UCPD emergency medical services manager, sent to the Campus Safety listserv at 4:33 p.m., well after the incident had been resolved. One wonders why the one resource available to administrators - a campus-wide mass e-mail - was not utilized earlier to alert students, staff and faculty to the situation, a resource which could kill two birds with one stone by dispelling rumors about the incident simultaneously. In the end, regardless of the endless reasons UCLA officials can provide in order to explain the response - or lack thereof - there is really no excuse. The bottom line is that there was a potentially dangerous situation very near UCLA, in the heart of the off-campus student community, and both UCLA and UCPD did nothing to proactively alert campus community members. This needs to change immediately. So in the aftermath of the Virginia Tech massacre, gun rights advocates began calling for the repealing of bans on carrying concealed weapons on school campuses. The national organization of Students for Concealed Carry on Campus is one such group. There are eight chapters of Students for Concealed Carry on Campus in Texas, the most of any state. Current Texas law forbids the carrying of concealed weapons in places like school campuses, places of worship and government property -- even if a person is licensed to carry. Arlington senior Andrew Sugg, head of Baylor&#39;s SCCC chapter, seeks to make it possible for students to arm themselves at Baylor. Groups like these have to use circular logic to reach their conclusions. Because a deranged individual brought guns onto campus, Sugg and others believe they should be allowed to bring theirs in order to protect themselves. What the gun lobby conveniently forgets is that the mental history of Virginia Tech gunman Seung-Hui Cho should have prevented him from ever obtaining a gun in the first place. Cho&#39;s mental history was recognized by a Virginia court in 2005, and due to inconsistencies between federal and state law, he was not entered into the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. The problem is not with the laws, but with the ability of the system to work properly. If it did, Cho would not have been able to purchase a gun and the conversation may not have gone in this direction. While it is clear that the response time of Virginia Tech&#39;s campus police was inadequate, this does not mean we should allow anyone who has gone through a criminal history check and a safety course to be a substitute for law enforcement. This vigilante attitude of circumventing the responsibility of law enforcement could potentially create many serious problems. The majority of people who receive licenses to carry concealed weapons are responsible individuals, but they do not receive nearly the same level of training to handle situations that police do. Although they do not receive the same amount of press coverage as a school shooting, accidents involving guns are far more common. According to the Centers for Disease Control, there were 776 accidental deaths and 75,685 injuries from firearms in 2001. It would be naïve to say that if bans on guns at these locations are repealed, there would be no accidents as a result. The purpose of banning concealed weapons in certain places is because the state has a responsibility to ensure the safety of its citizens in those locations. How wise would it be to allow someone to carry a concealed weapon to a stadium? A church? Better yet, how about an airport? Baylor police chief Jim Doak was quoted in Baylor Line magazine saying it would be "unwise" to lift campus bans. We couldn&#39;t agree more. Baylor SCCC has good intentions at heart -- making campus safer. But before we arm ourselves, there are other steps we can take that are both easier to implement and less double-edged. One step is to have better emergency planning. School lockdowns for threats are commonplace at our nation&#39;s high schools -- the capacity for emergency response should be no different in colleges. Another step is to better enforce the laws and have tighter background checks. Too many loopholes in state and federal laws are allowing people who shouldn&#39;t be able to, to get guns. Even if state laws are changed, Baylor as a private institution has the right to ban concealed weapons on its own. This year has seen numerous examples of the administration&#39;s sincere efforts to negotiate that line with the handful of student suicides and most recently with its response to Stanford students on the Virginia Tech shootings. But in each of those cases, we wish the administration would have spoken directly to all of us, or in instances in which they did, perhaps spoken sooner. An unknown number of classmates have taken their lives this year with no acknowledgement at all by the administration. Last week, it was more than 24 hours until we received an official response to the Virginia Tech tragedy. Undoubtedly, many factors go into the process for announcing a death in the community or responding to a tragedy at another school. In phone and email conversations, Director of University Communications Alan Acosta and Vice Provost for Student Affairs Greg Boardman said that the issue of family privacy rights should not be overlooked. While Acosta acknowledged that "there are a number of things you have to do right away" when dealing with tragedy, we don&#39;t understand entirely how the University&#39;s support network of Counseling and Psychological Services, the Bridge Peer Counseling Center or the Office of Religious Life assists students who are merely trying to determine if the rumor of their classmate&#39;s death is true or not. This year alone, rumors of numerous suicides plagued the student body, and in those times it was hard to find a student who really knew the truth of what was happening at Stanford. Boardman&#39;s email to the student body the day after the Virginia Tech shooting was appreciated. Students needed to hear his support — we just wish it had come a little earlier. Those who live and work here expect Stanford to be there for them. The student body was never notified after some suicides. We do not expect a front-page story in the Stanford Report from the administration, but we do hope for a brief message to acknowledge a friend has passed away. <b>Comments on this article:</b> <b>Stupid editorial</b> - 4/27/07 What exactly is the editorial board asking for? The administration to send out mass e-mails detailing every aspect of a community member&#39;s death? The Stanford News Service already acknowledges (in a tasteful way!) Stanford community members who pass away. Maybe it was a slow news day today, but the Stanford Daily needs to realize that a student death is a rare occurrence, but if one does occur, the utmost sensitivity is required and respect for the families should be a top priority. This is obvious to everyone but those intrepid Daily writers? We need to remember that these are very private, delicate matters and families might not wish to broadcast all kinds of details to the world. That is perfectly understandable and, absent any danger to campus safety or any other issue that might require the immediate attention of the campus at large, there is no reason why the widespread dissemination of all details surrounding a particular death ought to be required for Stanford News Service. The following line from the editorial is particularly ridiculous: "This year alone, rumors of numerous suicides plagued the student body, and in those times it was hard to find a student who really knew the truth of what was happening at Stanford." So the paper is basing this whole editorial on rumors? What evidence does the paper have that a particular death was never acknowledged by the administration? Sometimes it seems like the Stanford Daily editorials are written hastily and with little regard for common sense. <b>Re: Stupid editorial</b> - 4/27/07 I totally agree that this is a stupid editorial. The Stanford Daily was recently criticized for a long delay before they reported the death of Mo Morsette. And even when they did report it, it was not the top story of the day. It looks like, after some soul searching, the editorial board has decided that Stanford Administration is to blame, because the administration doesn&#39;t acknowledge student deaths quickly enough. After all, if someone doesn&#39;t tell the Stanford Daily that there&#39;s a death on campus, then how are they supposed to know? It&#39;s not like they&#39;re a NEWSPAPER with JOURNALISTS who are supposed to so FOOTWORK before they print stories. <b>Daily is grasping at straws </b>- 4/27/07 The Daily&#39;s editorials have been going downhill for quite a while now. This one is perhaps one of their worst ever. What exactly is the benefit of criticizing the administration&#39;s response to the VT massacre? <b>Brave Editorial</b> - 4/27/07 Stupid Editorial, it&#39;s your kind of overly sensitive, well-meaning but ultimately silly thinking that lets Bush get away with banning the media from soldier&#39;s funerals. I can understand respecting the family&#39;s privacy, but Mo Morsette was also a fellow member of this community - I would expect a complete investigation into what led him to take his own life, not in the interest of airing dirty laundry, but in the interest of helping other people who feel the same emotions that plagued him. This editorial is not just about last week&#39;s Virginia Tech shooting. It&#39;s also about the North Mecklenburg High School student who brought a gun on campus last Wednesday, threatened two other students and then left and shot himself. It&#39;s about the rumors of a planned shooting that circulated around Orange County High School last Friday and about the student who killed his father, then injured two others at that same school last fall. This editorial isn&#39;t about the Second Amendment or taking away Americans&#39; right to bear arms. It&#39;s about how to keep guns away from those who are unfit to use them. It&#39;s about taking away an easy means of suicide for the roughly 16,000 Americans who killed themselves with a firearm in 2004. It&#39;s about limiting the 14,000 murdered by guns in 2005 and the 650 fatal accidents the year before. One reason to study history is to avoid making the same mistakes as in the past. Stricter gun control laws might not prevent tragedy from striking, but they can make it far less likely. Even simple regulations such as background checks can make a huge difference. If somebody has a history of mental illness, that should certainly show up in a background check and prevent that person from buying a gun. And there is no sense in destroying information gathered during those checks after 24 hours, as is mandated by national law, when, in some states, that person can return to buy another gun 30 days later. A comprehensive registration system of gun owners would not hurt anyone but criminals. In Texas, residents do not need a permit to own a gun and do not have to register their firearms. The authorities don&#39;t even know how many guns are in the state. In addition, 80 percent of prisoners who own guns received their gun from family or a friend or bought it on the street or illegally. These person-to-person transactions go unrecorded. Automatic and semiautomatic weapons - for instance, a 9 mm Glock - only are available to police in almost every other country. You can buy an AK-47 online for $379.99, and nobody in their right mind - and certainly nobody not in their right mind - needs one of those. The assault-weapons ban, which expired in 2004, should be renewed. Gun-related crime has fallen since the mid-1990s, but rose sharply again in 2005. Unfortunately, the rates are still exorbitantly high. The gun-murder rate in America is more than 30 times that of England. Tighter gun control won&#39;t necessarily bring that down. If somebody has a strong enough inclination to kill another, that person likely will find a gun regardless of how strong the restrictions are, but it sure won&#39;t hurt to conduct thorough background checks and ban automatic weapons. We&#39;re not trying to take away Americans&#39; rights to hunt or own a gun in case anyone feels the need to start a militia and revolt against tyranny. Surely, as statistics show, we live on a very safe campus, even given the large city to which we are adjacent. Students are kept safe by a very respected and well-trained team of Security officers and a very thorough Security system, which includes blue light phones, among other precautions. But given the recent violence, our placement as a University surrounded by a large city and our ever-expanding campus, which includes URMC and the Brooks Landing project in the 19th Ward among other areas, is the current level of security enough to protect the thousands at UR? Further, is the current level of training and certification that our Security officers have enough given the jobs we ask them to assume? Currently, Security officers are severely limited in the actions they can take by their current level of training and certification. They cannot make arrests, investigate crimes, set up traffic stops or access criminal records to check for warrants. They carry no offensive or defensive weapons with them, lethal or non-lethal - that means no guns, nightsticks, mace or stun guns. Rather, they are expected to carry out their duties with just handcuffs and possibly a flashlight. The jobs of Security officers often put them in harm&#39;s way. They deal with affiliated and non-affiliated people on the UR campus every day. This includes violent criminals at Strong Memorial Hospital along with other potentially violent people in all of their patrol areas, including Brooks Landing or even the Fraternity Quad on a normal social night. Yet, in the presence of violence, Security officers are expected to detain the person with just the handcuffs they carry and just wait for RPD to arrive. It is simply not safe for anyone affiliated with UR to have the first responders to any scene, violent or not, unprotected and severely limited in the actions they can take. No matter what RPD&#39;s response time is to the scene, having to wait for the police to arrive takes valuable minutes while people are potentially in severe danger. As the shock of the initial shooting subsided, educators and students across the country scrambled to both understand and prepare themselves for this new and horrifying threat in American education. In the wake of last week&#39;s tragedy at Virginia Tech we can relate the emotion and logic of our response to Columbine as we struggle with the processes of grieving, understanding and preparing ourselves to trudge forward. While we will never entirely understand Seung-Hui Cho&#39;s motivation, feelings of anguish flood our mind as we try to comprehend the progression of his deadly thought-process. Although it is extremely difficult to find comfort following the deaths of so many, we can see as we did eight years ago that perhaps our best tools in the grieving process are overcoming and preparing as best we can for such events. Key to our understanding of these tragedies, is our attention to their most obvious similarities. The gunmen of Columbine, Virginia Tech and other schools across the country all felt they were waging a personal war with the world. While we are angry at them for their actions, if we can set aside those emotions and view them as victims of psychological disorders and an increasingly impersonal society, we can better grasp what led to these horrors. In doing such, we form a deep respect for our individual ability to prevent these atrocities by consciously guiding ourselves in being more aware, respectful and interactive with people we see on a daily basis. Our generation and the generations that will follow, live in a world where technological advancements allow us to move so rapidly that we can leave individuals behind and not even notice. While preventing these events must be our priority, we must also prepare for our reaction if they occur. Here at UMD for example, we can install locks on our classroom doors, public address systems, electronic command stations, etc. We can also publish lock-down procedures and ensure every campus community member knows what to do if anything were to happen. As we grieve for the victims of Virginia Tech, let us also move forward by devoting our individual and collective selves to preventing and preparing for a similar disaster. The most effective tool in ensuring our health and safety, which should be our number one priority, is not any piece of technology. Rather, it is our own attention to the people in the world around us.
