This situation took a small turn since the perpetrator was a 23 year old Asian (Korean) male. The loner mentality wasn&#39;t anything new because the two guys at Columbine also were loners too and the other perpetrators of past school shootings were also loners too with family issues. As a former college RA I have experienced students who are not as social as others, but I made it my responsibility to check in with my residents just to let them know I am there for them if they needed anything even someone to talk to. You got some RA&#39;s who are in the job just for the perks, but are not true to the job of being a student leader and someone who is held to standards to uphold and adhere to the job and what it entails. RA&#39;s need to be retrained to understand that they are in a position to serve students and to exercise their skills as a student leader, and having a more personal approach to how they interact with students. Most students who tend to be loners don&#39;t have a lot of friends and usually are the butt of people&#39;s jokes for being strange or weird and just plain dysfunctional. The RA who was among the victims of this horrific crime didn&#39;t deserve what he got, but this should be a wake up call to RA&#39;s who treat students like they don&#39;t matter. This should be a wake up call to students and teachers period that if you recognize someone who tends to be a loner to speak up because this can stop the violence in schools and it&#39;s not just college, but in grade and high schools everywhere. Students don&#39;t want to feel that they&#39;re ratting someone out, but would they rather tell on someone who&#39;s like this than to be the target of their anger and aggression when it builds up to the point that it hits the breaking point? This is where we have to take action, and not wait until something happens for us to do something about the problem. Columbine should have not happened, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold&#39;s parents should have taken note of what their sons&#39; teachers and counselors said about the disturbing behavior and maybe then something could have been done and the shootings would have not happened. It took a sad tragedy like what happened at Virginia Tech for people to recognize that the mentality of those who tend to spend time alone can be dangerous. For some of us who are attending college as undergrads and graduate students we should be able to feel safe on the campuses that we are attending classes at, and we shouldn&#39;t have to worry about some student who&#39;s disturbed who&#39;s got issues taking their anger out on innocent people.Innocent lives were senselessly lost due to a student&#39;s silent anger, and when it was made public by his English professor that his writing assignments were of pedophilia and murder should have tipped off the university that this student has issues and should have been treated as such. Are school administrations planning to take teachers and counselors seriously when they bring to their attention reports of a student(s) erratic and disturbing behavior where it involves some kind of harm to people or things or even committing acts of violence against a certain group of people or gender? There&#39;s got to be some accountability on a school&#39;s part to address these matters whether it&#39;s a student in grade/high school or even college. Students should be inspired to take even more action since peers are key to recognizing things among their own peers. If this was a team effort between fellow students and teachers this can lessen future incidents from happening.This is where schools need to up the ante and make people aware that those who are mentally ill are unpredictable. This runs along the line of Laurie Dann who was a mentally ill woman then 32 years old who went on a shooting spree and shot up 15 students and two teachers at Hubbard Woods elementary school in Glencoe, Illinois. The media frenzy was so bad that Laurie&#39;s parents had immediately sold their home and relocated to Florida to escape the press who would surround their house to get a response from them. They were at a loss for words because they didn&#39;t think their daughter was capable of doing such a thing until the media revealed that she was a paranoid schizophrenic and a manic depressant. The Columbine incident should have never happened either and this was due in part that Eric Harris was noted to taking the anti-psychotic medication Luvox as part of his anger management therapy which may have contributed to his psychotic rage most likely a side effect of taking the drug and also after the Marine Corps had rejected him when he applied shortly after his 18th birthday. What makes no real sense is that teachers and counselors at Columbine had been telling the Harris&#39; and the Klebolds for quite some time that their sons were displaying disturbing behavior in their work in school especially their writings and even artwork that was confiscated from them. Then what boils down to it is how you do you go about ignoring what teachers are saying about your child ? How did the parents of these two guys not know they were building bombs in their house something should have tipped off the parents. What some reports were said is that Dylan and Eric&#39;s parents should have been held fully responsible for seeking appropriate help for their child to address issues that were brought up out of concern by school officials. These parents had to have some idea that something wasnt sitting right when they&#39;re not looking in on them just to check up on them and even prohibiting them from having a computer in their room so they can monitor their activity online since they had created a webpage called Trenchcoat Mafia. This is why parents don&#39;t need to allow their kids to have computers in their rooms and need to keep it in a family room so that children can be monitored at all times. How could they not know that these two were stockpiling weapons and ammunition? That&#39;s just plain ignorance most parents would be searching rooms like a corrections officer doing a random cell search in a prison. This is what is not clear with parents when they ignore the warning signs of a potential problem when teachers and counselors bring to their attention issues of disturbing behavior. Dylan and Eric were both time bombs ready to go off if this was due in part to the so called teasing, but maybe they may have done something to provoke the things that happened to them? People feel sorry for loners, but do they really get to the bottom of the truth behind their strange behavior. be surprised that the Harris&#39; and the Klebolds haven&#39;t relocated out of Colorado to an undisclosed location to escape the media frenzy. What would it take to stop future incidents like this from happening? What can colleges and universities do to train their residential education staff to address issues of dorm residents acting bizzare like the guy at Virginia Tech. Resident Advisors need to be trained to spot potentially dangerous behavior in their residents and report this to the school. It shouldn&#39;t get to the point where incidents like this happen for something to be done about it. You have to nip that mess in the bud before it happens so that it not only saves the lives of innocent people who become the target of someone&#39;s anger out of control, but it will also bring increased awareness and security to campuses to protect enrollment status for the colleges and universities. As a former Resident Advisor I will say to the future RA&#39;s that you need to make it your mission and job to show compassion and caring for your residents because you are in charge of making sure they feel safe and comfortable during their stay on campus. You are also a student leader and a confidant when students come to you with problems whether it&#39;s personal or not. I always told my residents I have an open door policy if they need anything please call or stop by my room. Some RA&#39;s are just in the job because of the perks they get which is free room and board and a stipend that&#39;s paid out through the year. Some RA&#39;s aren&#39;t true to their jobs or to who they serve and that&#39;s what gives the good RA&#39;s who do their job a bad name and essentially just looking for an opportunity to make their resumes look good. There are times when you need an RA one isnt even around to help you and that&#39;s what frustrates a lot of students especially at big colleges and universities. I had some of the best residents around because some of them were students I had classes with and I talked to them outside of class if something&#39;s up, checked in with them just to let them know someone cares and if they have a problem we sought out the appropriate kind of help and utilized the school counselors if a problem was requiring the professional advice of a social worker or psychologist. Most of these loners are crying for help if their behavior is turning violent and disturbing. If there&#39;s the fact that the guy behind the Virginia Tech shootings had been making references to Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris as martyrs for what they did during Columbine he&#39;s just a copy cat except he didn&#39;t attempt to hijack a plane to crash it into some major city. This explains that laws surrounding the rights of the mentally ill needs to be changed because some people have more than one type of mental illness which can in fact make them very dangerous. This in turn should make this kind of information readily available to residential education and the counseling department so they can know what students to watch for and if peers around this person begin to talk about changes in behavior or normal routines to take it as something is going on and be on high alert. This is a hot topic across the board how many more incidents like this do we need to say something has to be done to stop this kind of violence on college and university campuses across the country. What can counselors do when confronting a parent(s) about their child having issues that needs to be addressed. Could the Harris&#39; and Klebolds avoided the mayhem their sons caused had they listened to the people who were trying to tell them their children had some serious issues. This is going to be a hot topic for a while after the Virginia incident because for someone who clearly had mental illness this needs to be addressed and I am sure the parents of the young man who was involved in this are going to be living with the pain of what happened. I hope the Klebold and Harris families reach out to them to let them know they are not alone and to try and make sense of what drove their sons to do what they did. This is also a pattern too since you see mostly young white males from middle class backgrounds doing this, but this time it changes ethnic background to Asian. Paul Haagen, chair of the council and professor of law, said he asked Trask to speak about Duke&#39;s preparation for "extraordinary safety-related events," in light of the massacre at Virginia Tech Monday. Duke has the plans, equipment and notification systems in place to respond to emergencies, Trask said. He added, however, that a response system alone may not have been able to prevent the tragedy. "In the current circumstances, I can assure you we have taken all prudent preparatory steps to deal with the circumstances," Trask said. He added it is impossible for the University to notify everyone instantly in the case of an emergency. "We don&#39;t know of any communication systems that can get a message to 27,000 people in three minutes," Trask said. He also noted that although the electronic door locks can be instantly disabled, there is no way of instantaneously restricting entry to Duke&#39;s campus. "We don&#39;t even control access to our campus... there are almost 20 different roads anyone could ride down to get into Duke," Trask said. Some members asked why no mass message was sent to the students and their parents after the massacre at Virginia Tech. "We deliberately decided not to send a message to all parents... because none of us really know what to say, none of us know the facts," Trask said. Council members also discussed if Counseling and Psychological Services has the capacity and strategies to deal with students&#39; mental health issues. "We need to be clearer in instructions about what faculty can and cannot do," Trask said. The council also listened to a presentation by Wright on the "strategic plan" for the Graduate School and the state of the school&#39;s finances. She said her goals for the future are like a "three-legged stool"-to recruit, retain and train the "best and most successful students." She said the school must improve its financial support packages, including health insurance, stipends and summer research awards, if it hopes to attract talented graduate students. "Having outstanding graduate students is critical to getting outstanding faculty," Wright said. "If we aren&#39;t willing to make that commitment as an institution, then we&#39;re in the wrong business." She said her priorities for the Graduate School next year include recruiting underrepresented minorities, planning the Graduate Student Center and evaluating teaching assistant training programs. "It made me realize we have hospitals that have huge campuses, [and] we have so many universities in the city," said Council President Maureen Feeney. Feeney said the hearing will focus on the concept of unifying a system to contact people in the event of such an emergency, especially on large campuses with many buildings. Last Tuesday, the day after the April 16 shootings, local law enforcement agencies met with 19 area universities to address emergency protocols. "Things like [the shootings] can happen at any point and at any time," said Councilor-at-Large Stephen Murphy. "It&#39;s a perfectly reasonable order for a hearing." Councilor Michael Ross (Back Bay, Fenway) said the city&#39;s University Accountability Act requires colleges to track their off-campus students for such an emergency, which would hopefully avoid the troubles the Virginia Tech administration had contacting commuter students during the shootings. Councilor Jerry McDermott (Allston, Brighton) suggested Virginia Tech officials may not have publicized news of the first shooting, in which the gunman killed two students in a residence hall nearly two hours before he killed 30 more in an academic building a half-mile away, for fear of marring the school&#39;s reputation. "Put yourself in the place of an admissions officer," McDermott said. "You wouldn&#39;t want this information getting out." McDermott said schools should not keep such information quiet and said the hearing should also investigate whether universities tend to suppress negative news. "Schools need to let everyone know the good, the bad and the ugly," he said. In other Council news, Councilor Rob Consalvo (Hyde Park, Roslindale) suggested Boston join the "national movement" of cities tackling the threat plastic shopping bags pose to the environment by holding a hearing in which councilors would consider several measures: either banning them, as San Francisco did, or taxing them, as Ireland did. "They&#39;re extremely environmentally unfriendly, and they don&#39;t biodegrade," he said. "They&#39;re not recyclable, and they&#39;re a major source of trash and litter in Boston." Taking a cue from the new Senate Committee on Global Warming and Climate Change&#39;s first-ever hearing at the State House on Tuesday, Councilor-at-Large Felix Arroyo said it is time for Boston to join the fight against global warming, proposing a forum for Mayor Thomas Menino to discuss it with local businesses and organizations. "The [Menino] administration has been out in front of the curve," Murphy said. The counseling center has drop-in hours and a crisis hotline to help University students. "When incidents such as this occur, it naturally raises concerns for everyone about the safety of students in our own schools and educational institutions," said George Pernsteiner, chancellor for the Oregon University System, in a statement. The counseling center hasn&#39;t received an influx of calls related to the shooting, but has received more media attention, said Shelly Kerr, assistant director for the University Counseling and Testing Center. Kerr addressed the media, including three local television stations, Tuesday afternoon. "I don&#39;t think we&#39;ll have hundreds of hundreds calls," Kerr said. "If this were to happen in Oregon or the Pacific Northwest, it&#39;d have more of an impact on the numbers." Kerr said counselors will typically try to help students understand why they&#39;re feeling a certain way. "What we can do is make sense of what they&#39;re feeling," Kerr said. "They&#39;re usually normal feelings, but they just feel out of control." Those who suffered trauma before may be more affected because the incident could trigger past thoughts, Kerr said. Those who know someone in Virginia or are Iraq War veterans are particularly vulnerable. Kerr recommends students talk to friends, faculty and family members to share feelings and experiences. But after Monday&#39;s massacre at Virginia Polytechnic University, mixed feelings have filled the campus. Delcey Pa, a UHM freshman planning to major in business, first learned about the shooting from friends late Monday morning. "Since I heard about the shooting, in the back of my mind, as I walk around, I know something like that could happen, but I really don&#39;t think it would," Pa said. "I&#39;m just glad I wasn&#39;t there." Out of 20 students interviewed by Ka Leo, all 20 felt that there was a possibility - though highly unlikely - that an incident similar to the Virginia Tech shooting could occur at UHM. "In Hawai&#39;i, we have more family and more aloha, I guess," Pa said. "In the mainland, it&#39;s a whole different perspective and whole separate world. But it could happen." Sophomore Mark Villegas agreed that the chances of a shooting were highly unlikely, but he said that the incident prompted him to reanalyze his campus safety. "It (the shooting) made me curious, what would have happened at UH," Villegas said. "If there were two shootings in the dorms, would security be able to prevent it from happening somewhere else on campus?" On Monday afternoon, UHM interim Chancellor Denise Konan offered her condolences and support to students through various campus resources in a mass e-mail. Among the resources mentioned was the Counseling and Student Development Center, "a University service that provides a variety of counseling and testing services for students and uses a holistic approach to promote wellness and personal success," according to the e-mail. The Counseling Center, located in the Queen Lili&#39;uokalani Student Service Center, Room 302, offers free and confidential services to students. Jeff Brooks-Harris, PhD, a psychologist and counselor with the Counseling Center for 12 years, said that he hasn&#39;t seen an influx of appointments since Monday&#39;s incident, but he said that&#39;s typical in an event such as this. "Most students are not going to choose to go to a counselor," Brooks-Harris said. "It&#39;s probably much more important they talk to each other." Just as counselors urged students at Virginia Tech&#39;s convocation service yesterday, the American Psychological Association suggests as a first step in reacting to the shooting to "talk about it." Psychologists from college campuses around the nation compiled a Web site yesterday with resources on how to deal with the psychological after-effects of the shooting, available at http://www.apa.org. Other recommendations include limiting the amount of news coverage you expose yourself to, helping others do something productive and giving yourself time to grieve or experience a full range of reactive emotions. Brooks-Harris said that, just as after Sept. 11, students in Hawai&#39;i experience mainland tragedy at a less severe level than those did in New York or New Jersey. "But in any crisis, whether it&#39;s a plane crashing into the World Trade Center or a professor committing suicide or a shooting in Blacksburg, it brings things closer to home," he said. "When we have our own preexisting fears and doubts, these things could bring them up, causing people to feel unsafe." Seung-Hui Cho took the lives of 33 people including himself at Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, Va. Initially, "investigators offered no motive for the attack," read the article on Yahoo! News the day of the shooting, titled "Gunman kills 32 in Virginia Tech rampage." Witnesses said Cho shamelessly opened fire as if he had no victims in mind, leaving the event to appear to be a random act of violence. "It&#39;s hard to say what was random and what wasn&#39;t," said professor Emily Gaarder, of UMD&#39;s Department of Sociology/Anthropology. Monday&#39;s shooting reminds us of another tragic event that occurred eight years ago in Littleton, Col., where two students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, killed 12 classmates and a teacher before taking their own lives at Columbine High School. Prior to Virginia Tech, the deadliest campus shooting in U.S. history took place in 1966 in Austin at the University of Texas, where Charles Whitman climbed to the 28th floor observation deck killing 16 people before he was gunned down by police, according to MSNBC. These tragic events, along with many others, leave many boggled with one main question: What brings young people like Cho, Harris, Klebold and Whitman to commit such horrendous acts of violence? Cho chose to tell the world his motive in a shocking yet disturbing videotape mailed to NBC news network the day of the shooting. "You had a 100 billion chances and ways to have avoided today," Cho said in the footage. "But you decided to spill my blood. You forced me into a corner and gave me only one option. The decision was yours. Now you have blood on your hands that will never wash off." Though there is no motive that could ever make such a horrendous act acceptable, Cho&#39;s disturbing message does help to clarify what was going through his mind. In the case of Columbine, investigators worked to find the killers&#39; drive for a long time. After years of research on the case, the FBI and its team have come to the conclusion that "the school served as means to a grander end, to terrorize the entire nation by attacking a symbol of American life," according to an article at slate.msn.com. Gaarder noticed that the cases at Columbine and other schools often followed a stereotypical trend where the perpetrator was an outcast who was bullied. However, these mass murderers can often be clinically labeled "psychopaths." "Because of their inability to appreciate the feeling of others, some psychopaths are capable of behavior that normal people find not only horrific but baffling," wrote Dr. Robert Hare, in "Without Conscious," a book about the disorder. "For example, they can torture and mutilate their victims with about the same sense of concern that we feel when we carve a turkey for Thanksgiving dinner." Gaarder also noted that it is typically men who are involved in these situations. Statistics from the U.S. Department of Justice note that "males represent 77 percent of homicide victims and nearly 90 percent of offenders," and "approximately one-third of murder victims and almost half the offenders are under the age of 25." "Maybe one thing we could do is teach the emotional skills as well as intellectual skills to students," Gaarder said. Gaarder felt that people should come together to discuss what can be done to keep UMD safe aside from gun control and increased security. "It would be a good conversation for students and faculty to have together," Gaarder said. "Students are at the frontline of people who could help bring attention to this." Sociology/Anthropology Professor Robert Weidner teaches his students daily about crime and the media. "From a criminology standpoint, you can&#39;t study it," Weidner said. "The hindsight of it is 20:20." Weidner said that high school shootings are very rare events and college are even more rare. "School is the safest place to be," Weidner said. Less than 7 percent of all crimes occur in school, according to statistics from the U.S. Department of Justice. This was the message that was emphasized during the Art of Living Organization&#39;s talk, "Creating a Violence-Free Society." With guest speaker international humanitarian Swami Pragyapad, this event strived to reach out to the UC Irvine community in order to establish a more peaceful and more harmonious environment for students and faculty. While the talk was open to the public, it proved to be an intimate atmosphere for the organization and event-goers. Sitting in a simple white chair in the front of the room, Pragyapad comfortably addressed real life issues that we struggle with in our everyday life. According to Pragyapad, we begin our lives as children constantly being told that we are to be calm and quiet, but never told how. If that wasn&#39;t enough of a predicament, it is also human nature for us to constantly think about the things that we are told not to think about. These inner conflicts can cause us to feel immense stress and when the mind is disturbed, the effects can be seen in all aspects of life. Pragyapad went on to explain the four factors that affect our state of mind. The type of food we eat can be very important. As a "gas" for our bodies and brains, eating the wrong kind of food can alter our behavior. Secondly, the quality of sleep that each of us receive can have a heavy impact on our lifestyle. Also, our breathing pattern can change our mindset. It is for us to recognize that when we are in a state of fear or anger, we can breathe a certain way. We should also recognize that intentionally taking calm, deep breaths can help change our attitudes. In addition, our understanding of what our lives are about and who we are can have an effect on our state of mind. The more we feel we have a grasp on life, the more our minds can be at ease. Just as a disturbed mind can cause unwanted side effects, a calm mind can make everything seem just that much better. With a clear mind, one can make decisions, study and even play better. Pragyapad&#39;s key tip to getting a good night&#39;s rest is simply to work hard. Another technique to having a stress-free mind is meditation, which he defined as the "art of doing nothing." In 20-minutes of meditation, someone can get the same amount of rest as four hours of sleep. When asked what he thought about during meditation, Pragyapad replied that he would simply "observe whatever happens in the body." So why don&#39;t more college students take advantage of the benefits from a simple meditation? "Because they think meditation is anti-enjoyment," said Pragyapad, who insists that this is far from the truth. For Pragyapad, a calming mind allows him to handle his frustrations and even help his grades, while studying less. Meditation doesn&#39;t even require you to necessarily go anywhere exotic, as was evident from our group meditation in a classroom. He does warn, however, that first-time meditation can lead to a sensation of sleepiness from the calming of the mind, which "passes in a few minutes." In regard to the recent "epidemic" of violence on high school and college campuses, Pragyapad sees meditation and other stress-relieving techniques as a means to help promote a stress-free university environment. To curb the violence, Pragyapad believes that we have to do two things. First, we all have to accept responsibility for the violent overtones in society and stop pointing fingers at each other. In accepting responsibility, we can all contribute to the change that needs to be done to better the community. The second step is to reach out to those people who don&#39;t know how to handle their emotions. Pragyapad says that "most of us can curb our violence tendencies; others cannot." Realizing this, we must reach out to everyone, because as Pragyapad says, it "doesn&#39;t require many to make hell for all of us." Using the methods of stress relief and meditation that is promoted by the Art of Living Organization, these individuals can learn how to deal with stress and find alternatives to such violent tendencies. Since the shooting at Virginia Tech University and suicide on the UCI campus, Matthew Scharpnick, a student at the Paul Merage School of Business and participant in the Art of Living Organization, says that the "whole foundation is putting forth an effort in the university [setting]." Scharpnick continues that "with things like the Virginia Tech shooting, you can&#39;t say for sure, but maybe, if he had the tools [of meditation and breath exercises], things could&#39;ve been different." The Art of Living course is a six-day class that teaches a combination of yoga, meditation and breath techniques called Sudarshan Kriya.
